I know that for an astral barrier it covers a set radius around the point it is cast upon. But the wording for a ward seems to me to sound like it sticks to a physical surface and cannot cover empty space.

Is this the proper route for using wards? Meaning to ward a room you would have to cast it upon the walls AND the door, and if the door was open then anyone could buzz in astrally through the now formed gap in the ward coverage?

First off, wards are done by volume, in cubic meters, not by surface area in square meters.

Second, a ward has to be attached to somehting. That can be a wall or a chalk line on the ground, but there has to be a physical representation of it.

A ward will cover doors and windows, even if they are open. It's the room that is warded as a whole, not the door surface or windows surface. Volumetric.
