Just got me a copy of Mr. Johnson's Little Black Book, and was perusing the bit on Reputation (page 120). Street Cred and Notoriety are fine, it's the next bit that is causing me problems. Public Awareness. Is equal to 20 minus both your Street Cred and Notoriety. This means that a newbie shadowrunner (with SC 0 and N 0) would have a Public Awareness of 20, while a veteran shadowrunner (with SC 11 and N 2) would have a PA of 7. Clear so far?
Huh??? I haven't even done my first shadowrun and allready I'm a household name??? Does anyone have an explanation or fix for this? Is there an errata sheet? |

Broken. Also, the rules are based on what you’ve actually done, not what people think you have or haven’t. A good idea, but from what I hear it failed rather badly.

From the first paragraph I came up with the 'this crap is broken' conclusion. Street Cred is somewhat broken in my opinion as well - I mean come on, a complimentary skill of 14?!?! No way I'm allowing that in my campaign.
So, I spent 2 hours discussing it with one of my players and we came up with a reasonable version. Notoriety is the only one which doesn't suck in my opinion. |

Well? Are you going to share, or do we need to send shadowrunners to extract this information from you? :cyber: |

Basically, I've capped the complimentary skill at 8 and made it one point of street cred for every 50 karma. Also, I've inverted the 'household name' stuff in Public Awareness and also have a second 'cred' which is general public which also makes it easier for Public Awareness.
That way, someone with 350 total karma still has a TN of 8's on a Public Awareness roll, and since most average plebs in the street (not 'the streets') won't have an appropriate knowledge skill they need 12's on an INT test. Seems about right for a Prime Runner to me :o) |

if you are defaulting and the TN# goes above 8, you can't default. Bear it in mind!

From what you're saying here, I'd say this is just a massive typo and they meant to say something like: Public Awareness. Is equal to 20 less than both your Street Cred and Notoriety. |

in the meantime, i'm having great fun with my 14 complementary dice. next time my character's not being chased by hordes of shedim, i'm going to have him steal cars by intimidating the owners to death.
one of my major problems with the reputation rules is that there's no downside. to me, a runner might not want to always throw his reputation around; big names attract lots of attention. using your reputation to do something should provide a TN mod to those wrong party checks in SRComp. |

Ya know, if you're being chased by Shedim, scaring people to death might not be the best course of action. :grinbig:

that's why i'm waiting until the shedim aren't chasing him. i'll also be waiting until he's completed the year+ of therapy to overcome his fear of the slavering undead.

Thanks bitrunner. I've been away from dumpshock for a while and only thought to check in after buying MJLBB. |

Yeah, the defaulting thing is a good point. Though I thought 8 was the last TN you could default for but hey, no biggie.
As for the downside, that's why I've included Public Cred. It normally progresses at the same rate as your Street Cred but it can be modified - wearing ski masks or mask spells or whatever in public to hide your identity or you could go about shouting your mouth off. This is just my initial house ruling on Rep. I'm sure it'll get ammended and updated several times :o) |
