I think Spider first showed up in the Secrets of Power trilogy by Robert Charette. That's the one that may not be a Totem, I believe? Spider as a totem was a later construct, in the Grimoire I think but don't quote me.

QUOTE
There are some who believe that totems are free spirits of immense power. A look at insect spirits supports that belief.

Only problem with this theory is that when you add up all the animals, mythics, idols, aspects of nature, Loa, etc, etc, and all the toxic / corrupted variations thereof? That's a heck of a lot of free spirits of immense power running around.

I think the pantheon would simply be unmanageable if each totem was a godly spirit. However, I'm certainly not against the idea of strongly Totem-themed spirits, or that there may be Passion-equivalents running around on a higher cosmologic level (which shamen have broken down and worship in components as totems).

As to entities being left over from the 4th World, the Passions still exist. They seem to be greatly reduced in power though.
