Sad as I am that Dell is getting money, I like those stats. Any chance we'll see improved forum reliability, or is that a software issue?

Once the wrinkles are ironed out of the new system, I expect the forums to be rock solid and several times faster than they are now. How does that grab you? :)

Hm. No RAID 5 controller? Kinda surprised about that, actually; seems like the way to go for what's essentially a file server. Guess this place isn't as busy as I was thinking. :P

No, no RAID5. It's hard to do RAID5 with the two drives we can fit in the 1U case. :)
We have to keep the server small so as to impose the least possible amount on our free colocation service. We will be doing RAID 1 (mirroring) across the two drives however, just like we do in the current Dumpshock server. You'd be surprised at how CPU/memory intensive the Dumpshock sites are ; disk I/O has not been our bottleneck in many cases. |

If you're running a webserver (very much not a fileserver) and you're hitting disk regularly, you're doing something wrong. ~J |

A static webserver is quite a lot like a fileserver, but the majority of the Dumpshock sites (and ALL of the most popular ones) are dynamic, so you're right, very different from a basic fileserver, so Kagetenshi is very much correct.
In the grand scheme of things, Dumpshock isn't all that busy a site, but we get a fair amount of traffic -- more than can reasonably be supported by one of the inexpensive hosting plans that someone suggested before. Of course, having designed some of the largest web clusters in the world, not much seems busy in comparison. The only thing I miss about that job is the unlimited hardware budget. :) |

Just a quick note by way of update: The new server should arrive today. It's on a UPS truck for delivery right now, so I expect it sometime this afternoon. Once I have it and have determined what kind of drive it has, I'll order a second hard drive for redundancy and start getting things configured. With any luck, it'll be configured and ready to be installed sometime next week.
As an aside, it's too badd FanPro didn't wait to announce SR4 until we got the new server. The forums had 2.5 times the normal traffic yesterday, and SR4 wasn't even announced until 1:00 PM. :) |

Going to try to find a matching drive at a local store tomorrow instead of ordering -- shouldn't be hard since it's just a Seagate SATA 7200.7 160GB drive. Pretty standard.
Hopefully looking at late next week to get it racked up, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm pretty much buried under a mountain of work, so there's no guarantees when I'll be able to spend some quality time getting things configured. Worst case it should be racked up week after next. |

Cute li'l feller. Not dead sexy, but very cute. What'll it be running, OS-wise? I'm assuming the same Unix variant that the current server is running?

It'll be running Linux, quite likely Gentoo or Fedora, I can't make up my mind which just yet.

Adam, is it possible for those that kicked in to by the shiney new server a chance to buy an advance copy of the SR4 core book (at, of course, normal price)?
