Cross-posting witha thread in Welcome to the Shadows (since I imagine more people will read it here).
I'm trying to put together a racecar build first and foremost for speed and acceleration. The Rigger 3 revised lying next to me states that a Sports car chassis can mount a jet turbine powerplant (pg. 199, about halfway down). The GM says that his book on the same page has no such entry however. Is this one of the differences between Rigger 3 and Rigger 3 Revised? |

You might try checking the Rigger 3 to Rigger 3 Revised Conversion Guide. This seems to fit what you describe ...

It is there, actually, just not where you might expect it to be.
I did always wonder why a Diesel Sports Car has a speed limit of 400 while a Gasoline Sports Car only goes up to 270... [Edit]Editing not allowed![/Edit] This post has been edited by Austere Emancipator: Feb 26 2005, 12:50 PM |

Gasoline sports cars beat jet turbines hands-down if you've got a solid mechanic. Jet Turbines can't have Nitrous Oxide injectors or Turbocharging. Turbocharging can increase your speed by 1.5(270*1.5 = 405) and your acceleration by infinite amounts limited only by your mechanics skill(There's no rule on how many times you can apply turbocharging, just it wont increase your speed more than 1.5). Nitrous Oxide Injectors add 5 dice to your acceleration tests but more importantly, they change your speed limit from Speed*1.5 to Speed*2.5.
The only reason for jet turbines is so people can replicate the batmobile. |

And because there's something wicked sick about seeing a car with a bigass Rolls Royce jet engine poking out of the trunk!
Somehow, I imagine a bigass jet engine would fit the concept of the character who owns the car far better than a "puny" gasoline motor ;) |

the maximum for turbocharging is the base speed*1.25. you can't add more turbocharging after you reach that limit. and even if it weren't, you'd still have to pay 10,500% more for a gasoline sports car that can match the max acceleration of a jet turbine sports car.

now if you want to talk realy sick speeds, go engine customization.
while the wordings nasty (rigger3, dont know if it was cleared up in revised) it can pack some effect either way (even more with gm backing as then you can avoid the stress points)... |

An answer to that nagging little question! Hurrah!
I guess I must have missed that while reading the errata... |

Only at design. The limit is x1.5 at the customization level.
Yes you can. The Max Rating/Improvement only talks about speed. That's it. It never mentions acceleration, so why are you reading acceleration into it? |

I hate to ask, but we're not talking about a car that uses jet thrust, correct? Jet engine to turbine to transmission makes wheels spin. Like a helicopter, right?

because turbocharging improves speed and acceleration. you can't pick and choose what gets improved; once you reach the limit with one, you've effectively reached the limit for the other. levels of turbocharging don't just increase acceleration and leave the speed alone; you have to improve both, and if you can't improve the speed anymore, you can't add any more levels of turbocharging. also, i don't see anything in R3, or the R3-R3R conversion guide, that says anything about the speed maximum for turbocharging being raised to *1.5 if you do it as a customization rather than a design option.
yes, dog. |

basicly what the abrams tank is useing. better known as a gas turbine. but the stats make me think that the writer have based it on those insane jet powerd cars they use to brake speed records with... color me confused... |

mfb... Design Specs on turbocharging: "To determine the new maximum, multiply the vehicle's original maximum Speed by 1.25"
Customization specs on turbocharging: "Multiply the vehicle's Speed by 1.5 to calculate the new maximum Speed." |

I thought it was like the STP Granatelli, Parnelli Jones driven 1967 Indy turbine car. Jones lead most of the race and had almost a one lap lead when a $6 transmission bearing put him out of the race on lap 197 of 200. Mrs. Ganatelli was heartbroken as she heard the news while waiting in the winners circle. USAC quickly outlawed the car. |
