Masking is, without a doubt, the most important ability for a runner, or for any other awakened being spending time in any city.

First and foremost, it lets one hide his obviously magical nature to casual astral observation. Second, it lets one attempt to fool a ward into letting your astral form, sustained spell or active focus pass without damaging the ward (or even letting the ward-maker know of the masked being's presense). Even registered magic users who are otherwise law-abiding citizens would benefit from not drawing unnecessary attention.

Agreed.
If it weren't for the ability to mask through wards then the technique would be much less useful and centering or shielding would take the top spot.
As it is..... :)

I'll usually take Cleansing second, as I do like not leaving much of a trace of me behind.

You can just use sorcery to celan up your spell signature after casting. Cleans up the traces on the astral. I believe it uses rules similar to dispelling. Saves you a metamagic. Cleansing can do more though.

Also on that note: Sterilize spell. SO damn helpful!

Using Sorcery can take quite a while, and Sterilize doesn't clean up Astral Signatures or Background Count.

Nope. but it does clean up those nasty blood stains (aka ritual links), or at least make them next to worthless. Spray bottle of bleach helps with that too.

Masking.

In both the campaign that I run and the one that I get to play in, the magic level is pretty high (as most of the characters in both sets of parties are predominantly awakened). There's always someone (or something  ) we don't want finding us, so staying hidden is probably the biggest plus I'd vote for.
