QUOTE (tanka)
There's as much chopping in any martial art as you put into it. Though most arts call it a "knife edge" instead of a chop.

No, not really. Judo is a specific way of fighting which doesn't involve any chopping. It's an olympic sport, so, it's pretty standard.

You just think you're a ninja, so everything should have swords and chopping! >_<

I kid, kid...

Perhapse, but if you do the james bond style drek, most people will grab you're arm and break it. It's a clumsy show move that I never saw anyone use in any tornaments I was in. Seriously, knife hand is used, but not in that way. Pheonix eye into that nearve cluster is more effective.

...of course it doesn't work well if they have dense trapezius muscles.

Edit:
Upon further thought,
Jujitsu (which I have training in) and Judo (of which I have none formal) are mainly grappling styles. I recall learning no stikes of any kind in my jujitsu class. I guess you could put chopping in it, but then it's not just jujitsu.

If we're going to be talking about knife hand chops and the joy that is the pheonix eye fist, I'm going to have to post this link again: www.bullshido.com.

Im having difficulty believing no one mentioned Austin Powers yet :grinbig:

Its absence has been running so loudly throughout this entire thread, it's amazing it hasn't been vocalised yet.

I have long wanted to create "Our Man Flint" but an espionage agent/playboy just didn't ever seem to fit in with our campaigns. I should probably go ahead and do it anyway. He would definately be a face with an edge.

AP is more of a satire on Flint than Bond, which is funny because Flint is a satire of Bond.

Ahh, that brings back memories.
Saw a chica use this on a guy after he slapped her ass in a pool hall.
She was a nice girl really, just had one hell of a temper. :-)

Ronin, please don't invite the Bullshido crew to dumpshock. This is really not the place for serious martial art discussions, and plus we'll get a torrent of MMA and Gracie nut-riders asking why BJJ and MMA never made it into CC.

QUOTE (Cakeman)
Yes there is, otherwise they wouldn't call it "judo" chop, now would they? :)

I was going to let it stand but now. There is no such thing as a "Judo chop."

As someone already pointed out the term came from 60's pop culture, in particular A Man Called Flintstone where Fred and Barney knock out the bad guys with a knife edge strike to the back of the neck while yeling "A judo, chop chop!"

Judo does not use hand strikes of any sort. It uses mainly throws, chokes, arm locks, and leg sweeps, but not striking blows. And before any one asks, 2nd degree brown belt in aikido, green belt in judo.

Uh, Snow, I don't think this thread is about making a martial art move in SR based in reality. It's about making an adept power for a tradition based on the adept's fondness for 60's pop culture. Authentic martial arts are immaterial.

Isn't there a nerve strike power that PhysAds can get? I think that would be more appropriate for this kind of thing.

Yeah, but enough people were kicking back and forth the actual term and if there was such a thing that I had to step in and say "no."

There is a Nerve Strike, but IMO it's statistically useless next to the other hand to hand adept powers that are already on the books.

I just watched that yesterday. It is EXCELLENT!!!

I think that AP got some ideas from Flint, clearly, but Bond was sort of the initial granddaddy inspiration for everything.
