FritzZero:

It's option b. p96 CC says:

"the character rolls a number of dice equal to her primay weapon's skill rating plus half the off-hand weapon's skill rating (rounded down). Only half of any bonus dice applied to the off-hand skill (from adept skills and so on) apply."

Right. So if two people are knife fighting, one with a standard 'knife' (SR damage code: STR L), and one with a dikoted short Cougar fineblade (SR damage code: (STR + 1) S), they should both have the same damage code? Same for a normal sword and the monosword or vibrosword? There are some weapons in SR that are going to inflict very serious damage on average, even with one hit. (The monofilament whip comes to mind.) This doesn't seem like a good solution to me.

well bad solutions are what you get when you post whatever comes to mind. apologies.

First I guess I should say that some of the melee high tech comes off as a bit silly to me. (vibrosword? sounds like porno) So I generally house rule on them on a case by case basis. For example I don't allow the mono whip because I don't like the science. (just because Gibson writes about something doesn't mean it should go into SR.)

All that aside, I was speaking about regular weapons. I would still give a dikoted edged weapon its wound level bonus. So in the case of your two knife fighters, one with the regular blade, and the other with Dikoted fineblade I would give one a base damage of STR+2 M and other STR+2 S. The flattening of the damage curve would be to increase the importance of skill over gear.

It always seemed to me that things like the monosword were a reaction to how nonlethal hand to hand was in the begining of the games life, And now these overpowered artifacts haunt the game like blue laws.

Or else you could just say to hell with all the complexity, and use the dual cyber-spurs ruling as long as both weapons you are weilding are the same.
