It's just positive mental attitude. Your state of mind is reflected in your body (neurotransmitter levels, blood pressure, etc.), and these physiological responses can help/hinder healing.

I personally don't see that as a problem. The role of a troll is to absorb stupid amounts of punishment, and my math above suggests that their proportionate healing rate is only slightly faster than a human's. That solves the old D&D-ish (subjective) issue of the Fighter/Barbarian always taking longer to heal than everyone else just because he has more hit points.
It's already integrated in every healing test: First Aid, the Heal spell, and normal downtime recovery. It provides a direct die modifier just like having more Body does; it's just not weighted as heavily as Body. Well, and it's constructed as a penalty when you have a low Essence rather than a bonus for having a high one; but either way it's a linear factor.
Entirely your prerogative. :) |

I think it's funny how reducing Essence hinders healing even if the Essence loss is due to an implant that is supposed to PROMOTE healing (Symbiotes).

Yeah, I distinctly remember realizing that after Man and Machine came out. :) Fortunately standalone Symbiotes themselves stay ahead of the curve with regards to longterm recovery time. It's when you're a fully-loaded death machine that Symbiotes become more of a "catch-up and compensate" measure. |

That was the subject of Errata in SR3, and I suspect will probably be included in the rules section od Street Magic. |
