I figure, what with runner's being able to listen to music in their heads, what music do other players listen to in order to get "in the mood". Not necessarily instrumental stuff to play while gaming, but what music in general? What bands, specific songs, etc.
In my old Cyberpunk (it's close!) group, we used a lot of Nine Inch Nails for mood music, but beyond that, I am sure there is much more available. What would everyone suggest? Especially for SR4. |

Currently in my games i have a media box hooked up to my TV, and that streams over music from my computer. I usually throw on 7 or 8 soundtracks or whatever i feel like at the time and let her go. Currently in rotation I have the Fifth Element Soundtrack, the Matrix soundtracks, and the Underworld Soundtrack. I find all of those are good for setting an "action" mood. Try thinking of other movies that fit your gaming style and picking up their soundtracks.
as far as bands go, since you mentioned using NIN, try "darker" bands: Rammstein's - "Sensucht" (battle music) Future Sound of London's - "Lifeforms" or their "Dead Cities" (futuristic cyber mood music) Coil's- "Musick to Play in the Dark vol 1" (dark, solid album without a lot of beats, good for background) KMFDM - if you're going for that "cyber punk industrial feel" any of their albums are probably a good bet. I'd try "Naive," "Angst" and "Nihil." if you need a starting point... 12 Rounds - Big Hero Front Line Assembly - "technical Neural Implant" (the name says it all :cyber: ) and "Epitaph" and if you're going for more of that industrial stuff, picking up a Skinny Puppy or Front 242 album wouldn't hurt either... hope that gets you started somewhere... :wobble: *edit* And since 4th Edition is supposed to be all new school and shizzle, maybe take your music away from the "industrial" stuff and throw in some new school electronic bands like Four Tet (i'd go with their album "Rounds"), Manitoba, Caribou, or isan or whatever like that. The Orb might be worth checking out too... Hope that wasn't too much... Music is what i do, so i kinda go overboard when i get the opportunity to share on DS... */edit* |

This playlist is a combination of lots of varying styles. Some of the more "Out of Place" tracks are either character themes or inside group jokes. I hope it helps.

Let's see...my playlist is really random, so I've got a good variety of stuff.
-The Beast - from the soundtrack to "Neon Genesis: Evangelion" (very good frenzy-type music; could be good for a Wolf, Bear or Shark shaman) -Damn! - by The Youngbloodz and Lil' John (could be good for a gang campaign) -Duel of the Fates - Soundtrack to Star Wars: Episode I (I'd love to role-play a final battle duel to that music) -Otherworld - Soundtrack to Final Fantasy X (this is the song that plays during the blitzball game at the beginning of FFX; great for any action-packed situation) -Walla Walla - by The Offspring (could be funny to play as a character is getting arrested ("Goodbye, my friend, you messed up again/You're going to prison, you're off to the pen/You got it off easy so many time/I guess no one told you how to GET A LIFE!") |

Two things...
1) The CD title is "Tactical Neural Implant", not "Technical." Which I think is even more appropriate. :) 2) While technically Yoko Kanno arranged the music for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the song "Inner Universe" was written and performed by Origa. Also! If you wanna try something new for Shadowrun and you're doing something street-level or would otherwise be 'rap-appropriate'... Listen to the best rap ever made. Seriously. Legend of the Liquid Sword, by GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. The man is a freakin' genius. |

When my GM had my group storm the Renraku Arcology we played CypressHill Black Sunday and the track came on as we were driving towards our insertion point with the chorus.......'when the shit goes down you better be ready!' that was pretty cool as a result Cypress be one of my first choice especially the track off the Skull and bones album Get out my head, very cool
Metallica also good running tunes |

Nothing beats Wagner's RotV, Shostokovich (any of his fast symphonic movements, Stravisnky's Rite, or Messaien's "Turangalila" (1st & 7th & 10th movements), "Outbursts", "Visions" (2nd & last movements), & "Dieu Parmi".for excellent music to hack & geek by.

A tune that really gets your mindset into that of a hunter (tracking down a target especially) is Front 242's "Headhunter". It at least puts me into a predatory mood...

I'm seeing Rammstein in this thread, and I agree.
Savatage / Trans-Siberian Orchestra is another group I particularly like for SR. The mixture of classical and modern seems to fit SR's cyberpunk / fantasy mix. Mozart and Madness from the rock opera Dead Winter Dead is one of my favorites for setting a cold, violent urban scene. Coil is another band you can get a lot of milage out of. My current SR list (though I make no gurantee this'll fit anyone's mood but mine): Cowboy Bebop - Blue Cowboy Bebop - No Reply Cowboy Bebop - Rain Cowboy Bebop - Space Lion Cowboy Bebop - Wasteland Cowboy Bebop - Words That We Couldn't Say Dead Winter Dead - Christmas Eve Dead Winter Dead - I Am Dead Winter Dead - Mozart and Madness Dead Winter Dead - One Child The Wall - Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 1 The Wall - Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 3 The Wall - Empty Spaces The Wall - Hey You The Wall - In the Flesh The Wall - The Show Must Go On |

I find the Deus Ex 2 soundtrack works pretty well too.
It can be grapped as mp3 off of deusex.com |

I suppose my tastes are a little different from those of others, but I've always thought that any of these would work:
(1) Anything from the Peter Gunn soundtrack, by Henry Mancini (the composer/conductor for The Pink Panther films and cartoons, among others); and (2) Almost any of the selections involving a chase scene from the first two MAD MAX films. The kick-a** instrumentals in some of them would be perfect for either (a) when the drek hits the fan (especially when the 'run goes *REALLY* bad) or (b) when the 'runners are going after a doublecrossing Johnson, or something else of the sort; or (3) Just about anything from a James Bond movie chase scene. EDIT: Kyoto Kid--Thanks for the tips about HEAVY METAL: THE MOTION PICTURE and BLADE RUNNER. I knew that I left out something.... I haven't seen the sequel to the former, HEAVY METAL 2000, but I suppose that some tracks from it might be suitable as well. --Foreigner This post has been edited by Foreigner: Dec 9 2005, 04:34 PM |

Then there is music from the unused soundtrack for the Heavy Metal movie... Bit of a rarity but it can be found in collector record shops. Some of the pieces definitely work well for a pirate campaign.
A second on Mad Max. Bladerunner (now that the original Vangelis version is available on CD) Cat People has a few tracks that could work Some of the old Larry Fast Synergy stuff is pretty applicable. Kinda sounds like what I'd expect to hear in a smoky dive synth-club in 2064. |

Black Sabboth: Iron Man (perfect for murderous razorguys)
Ozzy Osborne: Mr. Crowly (for the dark magic) Blue Oyster Cult: Ballroom Blitz (for melees) Blue Oyster Cult: Don't Fear the Reaper (For the suicidal missions) Blue Oyster Cult: Godzilla (preferably live - just for fun) Phish: Lizards (It isn't dark and it isn't gritty, but it is just plain wierd) Rolling Stones: Sympathy for the Devil (for meeting with Mr J) The Beetles: Maxwell's Silver Hammer (for gunfights with the Star) Lynard Skynard: Gimme three steps (for when the runners step into the wrong bar) The Beetles: Helter Skelter (for no other reason than the fact that it is the song that inspired Charles Manson) Edit: Lou Reed: Take a Walk on the Wild Side (For when the runners step into the other wrong bar) Steve Miller Band: The Joker (Should be Harlequin's theme song) |

I always figured Harlequin's theme song is "Ya Got Trouble" from The Music Man. The monolouge leading up to "Seventy-Six Trombones" also works. |

Phoenix, "Run run run" and "Victim of the Crime", simply because I can't but misinterpret the lyrics and apply them to Shadowrun. Also, John Butler Trio has some songs like "Oldman" and "The Company Sin" with lyrics somehow fitting when you don't need heavy music.

Here's a neat little toy i just discovered...
Discover Music - Pandora - Basically you put in a favorite band of yours and that creates a station that plays music based off the song structure that band is known for and, as it plays, you can give it input on whether it is doing a good job picking similar bands or not. So it is supposed to get smarter. Also, you can create multiple stations, so I'm flirting around with the idea of pre-setting up a "sneaking station," "battle station," and "background music station" before I play and then switching between them whenever the need arises... :rotate: Anyway, worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet. |

I didnt see Billy Idol on the list
Try almost the entire cd entitled Cyberpunk. Track 2 (I think) is called Welcome to the Wasteland. The perfect SR song |

I never thought of that but I suddenly have in my head an image of Loremaster Lofwyr performing that. I also now have in my head a campaign centered around the search for an an artifact called the Pompitus of Love by opposing forces that include Lowfyr, Harly, Lung, Alachia, and the Ordos Maximus. KISS should be on this list somewhere for no other reason than that their personas fit perfectly into SR. Might as well make the KISS achetypes into Totems and include the 2060's version of KISS in the quest for the magical Pompitus. |
