Full Version: Fast hacking...

I haven't read the book cover to cover yet, but have done some fairly in-depth dives on various subjects. Has anyone been able to find a quick-resolution hacking system for non-vital hacks as was proposed in MJLBB? Or was this completely scrapped in the change of Edition?

Considering that most hacking has been boiled down to a handful of rolls, really, there isn't a whole lot of need for the "fast decking" rules. They were originally designed as a quick and dirty "patch" to replace a set of rules that, to be blunt, didn't play well with others.

With SR4 Hacking operating in real time, often encouraging or even requiring a hacker to be onsite, and being much simpler in the overall rules and rolls department, it's just not necessary to have that little patch.

From what I can tell, you could hire an NPC hacker to use the "Probe system" option to come up with one or two potentially valid user accounts that would give you general access. For more cash they could try to weasle out a security account or even a superuser. Assuming it doesn't bomb out when you try it, it's good for the life of the run.

Remember that user accounts will generally get you in the building, common areas, and maybe one or two random lesser secure zones. Security accounts should go everywhere and a super user can not only get everywhere but erase the records that they were there.

Even if you hack on the fly, the new hacking system is much more straightforward. Real-time hacks will take maybe 2 turns before you either have access or security alarms are blaring; sometimes both.

If a player attempts something hard, that shouldn´t normaly be resolved with a few simple rolls when there´s no time to play it, I will simply increase the threshold to break in instead of loading IC into the system. That should pretty much do it.

Actually with how dumbed-down matrix rolls have gotten, most shadowrun teams can lay off the decker and get by with a decent hacking agent program (loaded with browse, exploit, and maybe spoof).

Of course, the 5% of the time that doesn't work, you are going to miss the decker.

Well more like 70% of the time. Anytime something requires thinking that agent realy isn't going to be able to do much. And just telling the agent to 'go find that file and grab it' is going to get you in trouble when the file is secured so if you try to access it without the proper passkey it deletes it, or worse IC. The agent idea is nice for say, Hey find a copy of a map of a building.

No need to do this. If the system is hard to break in just push the firewall. This works very nice.

It is very depress if the system just cut off the connection and you standing again in front of the SAN.
