Full Version: ED campaign - solo sword master
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Welcome to the Shadows
fistandantilus4.0
For any of you who happen to stop in here, this is just a starting point for a game a friend and I are having together. We will mostly be running the game through Trillian/IRC, but I'll be posting stuff here as well once we get going to keep track of everything. Also, my frined that will be in this game no longer has his books, so I'll be posting some general rules materials here, adding more stuff in with edits.

As some general guide lines, post any character actions in bold, in character speach in italics. But once again, this thread will only be updated with the action from the game once it gets going. If anyone feels like joining in, I don't see any reason why not, but we are both on grave shifts, and his schedule can be a bit erradic, so it may be difficult dependign on availability at times.

QUOTE (Combat Options pg200)

Aggressive Attack - +3 steps to attackers attk and Dmg step. Defender also receives +3 steps to attack against the attacker due to the fact that they aren't defending as well.

Attack to KnockDown - same as standard attack, except that the targets target number to resist knock down is the total damage, modified by armor. As opposed to resisting knockdown only when the target takes a wound, and the target # being the difference between their wound threshold and the damage dealt. Knockdown is resisted with a strength test.

   - Penalities for knockdown is -3 to all steps for actions, and -3 to physical and spell defense

Called Shot -3 steps to attack . Hits called area if attack succeeds.

Defensive Stance - +3 to physical defense

Going inside a shield - subtract the shield's armor rating from the attackers initiative to bypass the shield, basically attacking before the defender can get their shield in the  way. If the modified inititive is less than the defenders, the defender manages to get their shield in the way, knocking hte attack aside. Attacker then receives -2 steps to the attack test.

Giving Ground - defende back steps, giving gorudn to the attacker. +1 Physical defense for every 3 feet given. Defender can give 3 feet for every rank in the combat being used (i.e. rank 5 melee weapons defender can give 15 feet). Defender takes 1 point of strain for giving ground.

Rank 2: By tying a black silk cloth to the handle of the sword, it's second power becomes available. The silk can magically lengthen to a number of yards equal to the sword's thread length at the command of the wielder and attack. When this power is activated, the silk takes on the strength and resilience of steel.

Swordmasters of Barsaive, by Celou Zob'ear

Where should we start? Oh, yes. Well, Swordmasters are, masters of the sword.
The prowess of a Swordmaster can only be matched by, naturally, another Swordmaster. One should not confuse Swordmasters with Warriors. Warriors use brute force, and sheer durability to combat opponents. Whereas the Swordmaster uses wit, and pure talent. A Warrior hacks messily (however effectively) at his enemies, where a Swordmaster can gracefully "dance" around his opponent, waiting for the perfect opportunity to land a mortal blow. Also, the warrior is gruff, and usually lacks social skills. The Swordmaster, on the otherhand, is loved by one and all (especially the ladies). Men stand in awe of the talent of the Swordmaster, hoping that one day, they too, could be just as talented with the Sword (and the ladies).

*Authors note: Please excuse any misspelling of words, or incorrect grammar, as I write this compendium while sitting next to a once great comrade, who has been horror marked, and my party and I have decided to restrain him in a rug, for his safety and theirs, hoping for a way to free him of his curse, without shedding his blood. Unfortunately, the rug does not dampen the noise of his incessant banter, and the things he says are usually quite unintelligible, but never-the-less, it can be quite disconcerting to some, and I must admit that, even I, have been affected by his wailing in the night. I only hope that he can last long enough for us to find a cure.

Sadly, Cor'am, the horror marked wizard/elementalist dissapeared soon after these writings, his whereabouts unknown. Not long after this, the group of adventurers went their seperate ways. The archer Cien delivered the mysterious book that the wanderers had found to the Great Dragon IceWing, whom Cor'an may have an interest in the book, since it had a hint of dragon magic. Cien returned only once, to hand over his headband that they suspected was a thread item to Celou, saying he no longer had use for it.

Xan Silverblade went his own way, which many in the group were thankful for, having tired of his arrogance. Xan, of course, left nothing behind, and everyone suspected beign a few silver lighter. Luckily IceWing had rewarded the group with 500 silver pieces each.

The weaponsmith returned to his home in Throal, having tired of the hardships of adventure, seeking retirement with a warm hearth, cheerful wife, and fat babies to follow. He also donated an amulet the group had found together to the last true adventurer among them, Celou.Fortunately, the smith had uncovered the key knowledge of the amulet long ago.

You have been residing in Bartertown for the past few weeks, training in the talents of your new circle. The trainging has been hard but rewarding. You have attained the rank of Journeyman in your discipline, no longer a novice. You are a SWORDMASTER! Well... A swordjourneyman. But it's something. Now you've got some respect. Now if you could just get a job........

You enter a well known Bartertown establishment known as the Dancing Shadownmant. As usual, the place is busy. You take a particular interest in the business of the barmaids busiily moving about, bending over to hand out drinks.

Celou:if any of them make eye contact, I smile at them...a winning smile, some might call it. heh

Barmaid walks over to ask you if you would like a seat at the bar or a table.Makes the foolish mistake of making eye contact.

C:lol....7 on the roll

GM:good enough:she smiles warmly.What can I ... DO for you?
c:Could I get a table over there miss? Point at a table
GM: she leads you over to a smaller table ,out of the way of the usual bustle, takes your order, and strolls off, as provacatively as she can (cha14)

C:Smile turns to a smirk for a brief moment.
GM:You settle into the familiar feel of a Bartertown bar, enjoying the pulse of life around you, almost hoping someone starts a fight. No one does, so far. But at least you havea pretty barmaid to make eyes at.

c:when she comes back I ask her about the wines they have.
GM" Well, we have many.... sweet... wines. Some of the other girls will suggest the harder stuff. But I always go for something ... smoother. My name is Celen."
c:" Ah, then I think I shall try what my lady Celen likes.Wink and smile.

GM:She smiles back, and hurries off for the wine. Before your eager barmaid returns, the seat in form of you is suddenly occupied by a green skinned, blue robed, smiling t'skrang
Excellent! I had heard that you frequented this establishment! Most fortuidous!"
c:"Ah, so nice to fine someone who has heard of my exploits. Seems many here in barter town never come out from their homes."
GM"You are, of course, swordmaster Celou that I have heard so much about , yes?! Braved the Valley of Tears? Spoken with the Great Dragon iceWing? Battled the Grim legion!?""

c:"Aye, 'tis I, Celou Zob'ear.
GM:" Excellent, most excellent!"
c:" How may I be of service?"
gm:"I have come to you, because I have a matter of great importance! Otherwise I would not waste the time of such a noble master of the blade"
Apparently all Tskrang are masters of flattery
"It is ... a most sensitive matter... one of great historic value, as well as monatary. For you, most... rewarding, if you get my meaning.I am Sylshan l'vishtron, a wizard of no small skill, I 'd like to think."
C:"Ah, yet another adventure to add to my list of perilous adventures.Well, Sylshan I'vishtron. You have piqed my interest."
GM:"This one shall be , perhaps a different from your past explioits. But no less legendary. We seek a great treasure. well, a treasure to my intellecutally interested mind at least.for you, you may be more interested in the tales of a few orichalcum coins to be had"
C:"Might you be looking for a tome of lost magical.....Eyes get wider for a second. well now."
G<: You see, I seek the spell library of a great wizard of the past, by the name of Fzoulis. He was an ork, and a brilliant one. It is also said that he practiced the art of the elemtanlist, and was said to mint a coin or few. My interest is in his lost grimoires. Yours would be ... in the results I think.Interested?
C:I am indeed. What would you have me do?
GM: " Of course, as is the nature of all things of wonder, the kaer has been lsot to the ages. I have, in recent months, by a great turn of fortune, acquired a Theran prescourge map of the area of where the kaer was said to reside, which shows the exact location.however , that of course would likely meant that the kaer was breached by horrors during the dark times
at this point the t'skrang is whispering low. You now also notice a large, armed human that seems to be gaurding him as well, watching for eavesdroppers
c:Thoughtful look at something only Celou can see. I have fought horrors before.Though, even I will not risk meeting them lightly.
GM" wise of course, which is why I seek you out.. on both counts. although I do not know if the kaer we seek is infact.. infested..... it is a treasure to great to pass by
C:I will help you on your quest then, Sylshan.
GM: Most excellent! As I say, I do not know the exact number of coins that will be present, but even one would be payment enough!when would you be ready to leave, my fellow hunter of treasures so wondrous our mortal minds cannot comprehend!?
C:Might I also ask you if you have any knowledge of historical weapons? motion to my second broad sword.well, I am enjoying the relaxing environment here, in the Dancing Shadowmant. But perhaps tomorrow we could begin our journey?
GMMy knowledge is of things of a less... martial nature... but I may still be able to help you.By your circumspect inquiries, I deduce that you are seeking some piece of key knowledge
C: Aye, and when we return from our expedition, I would ask if you might be able to help me in discovering it.
GMWell, if it is a thread item you seek knowledge of, .... I am of the opinion that forarmed with knowledge is hte best armament indeed. Do you knwo the weapons name yet?

C:Alas, I do not.
GM:Then perhaps, as a matter of down payment, I can acquire this knowledge with a bit of research for you. in the mean time, perhaps you and our warrior Ganlin can acquire us some Kaer-delving gear, to better prepare us for the trip?

C:Aye, I could...after I enjoy the wine the Miss Celen is about to bring over.
GMlooks in the direction of a barmaid looking rather angrily at his backPerhaps.... now... would be a good time to start my research. I find that angering those that bring your food is folly at best.may I see your bllde for a moment, to examine it for my research?

C:I thank you in advance, my friend.
GM:The blade, then?
C:Hand him the blade.

Sylshan spends a few moments carefully examing the blade, apparently memorizing every aspect of it. For a time, he seems to be looking thorugh the blade, and you wonder if perhaps his over zealous mind has wondered on to something else. After a few mintues of his close scrutiny, he carefully hands the broad blade back
A most excellent weapon Master Celou, I commend you for acquiring it. I already havw a few lines of inqury I am eager to follow. If you will meet my associate here tomorrow in the morn, you two can get the preperations under way. We're agreed then?

C:Aye. Ganlin and I will meet, here, in there morning then?

GM Yes, excellent. It shall take me a few days of research in the Great Library, but I think my preparations hsould not take much longer than yours. I will excuse myself then, and leave you to you're..... woo-ing?

C:Smirk.

GMThe Tskrang and his human companion leave the bar. Celen practically storms over and nearly slams the bottle of expensive wine down on the table and turns in a huff

C:My apologies miss.Give Celen twice what the wine is worth.

eventually she returns for the payment, sees the small pile of silver, and her warm smile returns, as your coins dissapear. anything else for you then?

c; May I get something to eat?

what will you have?

C;Hmm, maybe I would like some steak.

she goes off to get your food.

C:after I eat, I go to my inn, check my things, and make a list of things I might need.

You spend 5 days bartering with different marchants, espacially to get a price for healing potions that won't make you want to swallow one just to recover.Ganlin, whom you get to know, is one the dour warrior types that you so enjoy to taunt, although his honesty can be refreshing at times, as is knowing that there's a blade guarding your back that you can trust. More than a few times though, you've suspected that you're being followed. Perhaps you and the T'skrang Sylshan were a bit too loud discussing your upcoming exploration/exploitation in the Dancing Shadowmant.

You meet Slyshan today in a study room near the Great Library of Throal , where many scholars go to discuss their findings. The Royal Guards allow to pass into Throal freely, since you've spent some time coming and going in the last few months

The Room you find yourself in is the type that seems to require dwarves in smoking jackets talking politics. Lucky for you, there are four of them there, doing just that. Their heated debate gives you plenty of cover to discuss Sylshan's findings about your sword.

C: Greetings friend. Might you have found out anything of this sword?

GM:I have excellent news my friend! I ahve idetified your blade! A most curios and .. formidable weapon

C: Please, tell me more.

GM:The sword was first wielded by the swordmaste Derita. He named it "Derita's Silk Tailed WailorYou flash back uncomfortably to the battle with the swordmaster you claimed the blade from, and the unholy wail the sword made when drawn from it's scabbard Derita was one of the members of the first , original, Grim Legion. The blade was , in fact ,crafted for him by a horroor , of all things, by the name of....he writes the name "Harjarlifex, Artificer of Dooms"

C: I weave a thread then

Roll - 9

GM; try again

Roll -18

GMAs you tie your pattern to that of the blade, and bind it, you feel the link complete and bind you to the sword. The sword shrieks it's ghastly wail, sending the debating dwarves scurrying in fear. Even Ganlin seems startled and a bit afraid. You, however , are completely unaffected. You find yourself grinning

C:I sheath the sword.

Well, that was certainly..... enlightening.Shall we be going then? I assume you have finished the preperations?

C: Aye

GMLet us be off immediately then
Your group heads out of Throal, into the inn in Bartertwon to collect your things. Within the hour, you are off and away, the three of you saddled comfortably (or rather, two comfortably, the t'skrang distinctly uncomfrotable) on your fresh mounts, as you head off in search of your fortunes.

fistandantilus4.0
Within the first few hours, you pass numerous merchants of all races and creeds, tavelers, pilgrims soldiers, farmers, all coming and going about their business, on their way to or from bartertown. By the end of the day however, you speedy mounts have moved you away from Bartertwon/Throal proper, headed west, to where, only Sylshan knows. You make camp an hour before it gets dark , in order to prepare camp with some light left. Although the dark is no hindrance for you, your companions prefer an early stop to thumbs smashed from trying to drive tent stakes into the ground in the dark.

C:I speak with Ginlan about his travels.

Ganlin I come from Jerris, on the western border of Barsaive, near the wastes. It is.... not a pleaseant place, and I've no wish to return. Or discuss it. Gather some wood will you? Your eyes will find you back here easier than mine when darkness falls. I'll set the tents.

C:Fair enough I go collect wood.

GMyou collect wood . congratulations. 2 LP's , as your legend of a collector of wood in the dark grows

C:yes!

GM you return to camp within a half an hour and start the fire. Soon it's glowing nice and warm. Ganlin sets a pot over it, and starts a stew, with some chicken purhcased in Bartertown. WIthin the hour, your bellies are full, and a skin of ale is passed (mostly between you and Ganlin). After another hour or so, you begin to retire for the night. Ganlin askes you to take first watch, until the moon is at it's peak, then to awaken him

C: I nod. Wake Ganlin when the moon is at it's peak.

GM:any special preparations?

C:Nothing special I can think of. I just watch where I can see both Ganlin, and Sylshan.

GM Ganlin sleeps i his bedroll, no armor of course, sword and shield next to him. The bedroll remains untied. Sylshan sleeps in his tent

C:I check the bodies for anything on them that might tell us who they were.

GMGanlin :d thought we may have been shadowed in Bartertown. We were not very quiet about our intentions. I should have stayed awake as well. My apologies

SylshanNonsense! between your blades, and my spells, we made quick work of them! A good exercise I think! Did you see that thieves face when my spell slowed him to an ants crawl, and the elf came running! Oho!

C:Nonsense. If none of us get sleep, how can we continue on?

GMthe bodies each have a few small knives, daggers and short swords. THe thieves are wearing hide and boiled leather armor. Money wise, there's about 50 silver between them. Sylshan waves the money away, so you and Ganlin split it.

C: Haha. Sylthan, that human did look like he was surprised.: Nod thankfully to Sylthan.

Sylthan waves away your thanks, and finds his sewing kit ,going to work on his tent

C:Laugh and shake my head.

The next night, over a warm, and large fire, the group sits down to discuss their destination, and hopeful treasure hoard. Having earned his trust by defending him against the thieves, Sylthan presents the roots of his knowledge about the once great Wizard Fzoulis to Celou.

"The records of Kaer Morses give us the best insights to this brilliant mind. Fzoulis stayed there for a short time, before heading on to his destination, Kaer Vorsat. Kaer Morses had a wizard of it's own, although not of the high caliber of Fzoulis, where as Vorsat had none, and was there for in greater need of his protection and skills according to the records.

What may interest you is that Fzoulis did trade a few orichalcum coins for true elements while in Morses. There were none in that kaer that new the secrets of creating the rare and potent metal, and they were grateful for what he could spare.

The records state that he moved to Kaer Vorsat just shy of a month before that kaers closing, doing what he could for Kaer Morses in the time he had. Unfortunately he either rushed the job, or their resident wizard was not up to filling the shoes of such a genius. Kaer Morses was breached, apparently early on, for their records do not record much after this. Apparently another wanderer brought a horror into the Kaer with him. A pity that such mercy as the Morsesians showed cost them their very souls. But their records still live, to lead us to better future for ourselves.

And before you ask, no, I don't know what happened to the orichalcum coins Fzoulis left in Kaer Morses. The place has been gone over more times than a whore in Kratas. Or a Theran spy held by Scorchers. Whichever mental image you prefer."
