So, I noticed the ads you guys are running for some kind of gold mining group on DnD Online (www.BroGame.com). Why are you doing this? I'm sure you're all aware of the usual gripes about gold miners, and why they suck. also, by the looks of things, they're using copyrighted artwork from WotC for their ad, and I doubt you guys want to get mixed up with that.
Nikoli
The ads are random, they are just selling the space to run the ads, not the ads themselves.

The 'Ads by Gooooogle' didn't clue you in that it's nothing more than a banner network advertisement Nick?

It was certainly clear for me. However, there should be a way to complain and say "We find this to be unethical and immoral and, though not completely illegal, probably is in violation of the TOS of D&D Online.

So, is there a way to complain to Google?

Can't you have the website filter ads by URL?
Tanka
You can, but there are hundreds of goldmining websites out there that Google lets through.

There's a list of WoW goldminers out there somewhere, not sure about DDO. You can implement the WoW one and it would most likely it would kill most of the DDO ones, but I'm sure there are others still floating about.

The problem with Google Ads is twofold.

The first is that Google is a whore. Anyone can advertise through their banner ad program, with the possible exception of porn sites or ads with nudity. I'm not really sure about those.

Second, they appear to operate by searching out keywords on the page and matching ads to those keywords. In theory, this is targeting the ads to the demographic reading the page (Thus, WoW and DDO comments will generate Gold Farmer ads).

In theory if there was a thread with "BRAS!" and "PANTIES" in it several times, you might end up with, say, a Victoria's secret ad. smile.gif

<shrug> Like i said, I'm not 100% sure how these things work. All I know is, they're fairly unobtrusive and they generate a little revenue to defray the costs of this site. I'm willing to click on the ads occasionally, just to help out smile.gif

Bull has it, more or less, correct.

For any of you who use GMail, the ads on the sides are generated in the same manner.

It takes some key words (words that are repeated, words that seem important, et cetera) and does a quick search and returns one or two sites that have signed up to advertise on Google Ads.

It's very rudimentary, but it's very low-bandwidth and usually returns some hits that are somehow related to the topic at hand.

Even mentioning roleplaying or videogames can pop up gold farming ads. And since Dumpshock is about a roleplaying game... You get the idea.

I don't know how much it will help, but there is a feedback for the adds where you can tell them what you think of it.
