What if you don't like superman and hate superhero movies in general? Will you still feel bad if you don't see it?
That seems unlikley since your ona board about Role Playing Games. However if you HATE superman and SuperHero movies, then why would you read a thread about the Superman movie?
And who knows how you will feel about Superman in ten years, could be you will regret it. Its not just a good SuperHero movie, it's a good movie.

I'm not sure why that seems unlikely. My shadowrunners aren't superheros either, and I don't play D&D.
Why am I reading a thread about superman? Because I was curious. I wasn't aware I wasn't allowed to read about things I don't have a vested interest in. I can stop reading the SR4 forum as well, if you'd like
That said, my dad was into superman since he was a kid, and made me watch the b&w episodes. I've seen all the previous movies as well. It wasn't really because I wanted to, but because I happened to be in the room at the time. So I was wondering if the new movie is just as stupid as the older movies (we can turn back time by rotating the earth the other direction!) or if Superman was gay or what. Since I was reading the thread, and Shadow's comment said "see this movie" without any qualifiers, I felt it was worth asking, is it good because it's about superman? Or is it just a good movie? I have seen the X-men movies (1 & 2) and enjoyed them even though they're about superheros. If it's that level of quality and story, maybe I really SHOULD see it.

It is not cheesy, or campy. Not at all like the 70's movies. It has some serious themes and issues in it. One scene in particular, was brutal. Brutal to the point of really showing you how much Lex Luthor truly hates Superman.
Its a good movie with an interesting plot, good acting, and great FX. Assuming you don't hate any of the actors/directors or Superman, you should enjoy this movie. |

You should then. Same director/writing team. Brian Singer also did a movie called Usual Suspects.

I didn't realize it was the same directors (and I loved Usual Suspects). I have to admit, the 70's movies pretty much forever put me off superheros. Where's the challenge when you can just turn back time and physics don't apply to you?

The only people who could possibly think he is gay, are gay men who want to be with him. He doesn't get much more manly than this. I swear a man shows a little emotion and he just must be gay. Sheesh.
The still pictures of Brandon in the Superman suit really don't do him justice. My wife, who doesn't like Superman, didn't think he did a good job of looking like Superman... before she saw the movie.
Her, and every other woman in the theater let out a collective sigh as soon as they saw him in the suit for the first time. She looked over at me and said "I get Superman now, he's awesome" Trust me when I say, he ain't gay.

Anyway I enjoyed the movie in general. Although there were some aspects of the plot I think were Weak.
As for the gay comment, it looks more like the writer was using gay to mean, Lame, Moronic, Silly, bad scripting, ect.

Another interesting factoid, not only the director is the same from the first two xmen movies, but the guy who plays Louis Lane's new squeeze is... the guy who plays Cyclops! Yup, it's another reason why cyclops wasn't much in the third movie. He had to juggle with two films and hell, he has a larger speaking role in the superman movie AND he doesn't have to wear the freaking visors the entire time. People can actually see his entire face without it being some plot point. Hehe.

It's supposed to be part of his disguise.
He wears a mask in his "Secret Identity" Ya I know, Glasses not much of a diguise.
The idea is that people who look at him see mega-dweeb and assume that he couldn't have been off, well being Super.
Personally, I like the explanation that he really has Multiple Personalitys, although that would tend to indicate that he has had several traumatic experiences to splinter his psyche.

Maybe not, but most people can relate to feeling alone, and feeling like an outsider. Thats the part of our psyche that he relates to. He is the ultimate outsider.
It doesn't matter if Superman is straight, gay, or bi. He will never be able to have a sexual relationship with a mortal human because he would kill such a fragile partner in the throws of passion. Larry Niven made that clear.
Imagine the self-restraint required not to accidently rip someone arm clean off during a simple handshake. Every day Clark Kent faces countless situations where he would kill someone if he allowed himself to slip even once. It must be very difficult to keep up his facade of being a normal person. When he takes off the glasses and puts on the cape he has a degree of freedom. He can let himself go. He can use his abilities without worrying about what other people will think. But he still has to restrain himself so he doesn't slaughter innocent people by accident.

If he wasn't so anal-retentive then his farts would level cities and his sneezes would sunder nations. Hmm... It's actually kinda amusing to me that Superman, being a space alien, is a xenosexual and that kinda outshines the whole gay/straight thing (or IS he a xenosexual? Maybe he doesn't find humans attractive at all. Maybe super people sex involves third parties and ovipositors.

Honestly, this is the first Comic book genre movie that did not require me to delete everything I knew of or thought I knew of a character. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, from beginning to end. It was a wonderful testament to Chrestopher Reeve and his struggle. I truly hope they can continue this franchise in the many in which it was begun.
And Kevin Spacey was a wonderful Luthor, I had my doubts, he was the only one I was concerned about. And he was a beautifully sardonic icon of madness blended with genius.
My only beef what so ever with the story and character development is Jimmy Olsen in a bar. I just can't see that boy drinking.

Nikoli, I think maybe you forgot a "not" in that first sentence, judging by the tone of your post. Maybe I'm reading it wrong.
I thought it was an excellent movie. They got all of his core powers correct, and I think all of the characters were portrayed well. It had the good feel of the old superman, but without the stupid crap (no spinning the earth to reverse time)

He is a xenosexual. He likes the Earth ladies, apparently.
There was is a Pre-Crisis story called Whaever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. At the time, DC intended it to be the canon 'ending' to the Superman series. Superman's true identity is revealed to the public and he is involved in a series of battles. Lana Lang, Jimmy Olsen, and Lex Luthor die in combat and Superman brutally murders Mr. Mxyzptlk. Having broken his own vow never to kill and lacking any life to return to, Superman exposes himself to Gold Kryptonite (which permenatly strips him of his powers) and wanders off into the Arctic to die.
In the end, it is revealed that he survived, created assumed a false identity and married Lois Lane, and fathered a child.
Likewise, in current DC canon Superman is married to Lois although I'm not sure if the have ever actually had sex.
In the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Lois and Clark did get married and they did have sex. I'm not sure how he avoided killing her.
In Smallville, Clark Kent had sex with Lana Lang after losing his powers. He also got married a radiologically enhanced human female villain because she wouldn't have sex with him without a comitment. I'm pretty sure that they got divorced soon after.
So yes, when it comes to sexual deviency Superman ranks right up there with the members of the First Church of Zoophilia.
Another interesting fact about Superman is that he may or may not be able to become President of the United States depending on when a story takes place.
Pre-Crisis of Infinite Earth's Superman was born on Krypton and sent to Earth n a Rocketship. He gained legal citizenship via adoption. Post-Crisis on Infinite Earth's Superman was born in the United States. His rocket ship was a "birthing matrix", some sort of artificial womb. After the Infinite Crisis this was changed again and Superman is an extraterresterial once more.
I adored Batman Begins and was really looking forward to the new supes flick.
Saw it last night, and I'm sorry to say I was so disappointed.
Bottom line: if you haven't seen it, then go ahead and do so. But don't get your expectations up too high. You might enjoy it more that way.

I wonder... how long until they pull a World's Finest? They have both franchises active, and a Batman vs Joker movie is almost certain. After that, you get to do another Supes movie (without Luthor, I presume), and then... World's Finest?
