...and we thought organlegging was only a problem in Shadowrun

Surgical vacations are on the rise all over. You can get dentistry/cosmetic surgury done in mexico for a fraction of the cost. India and China have had black market organ legging operations for ever.
I think organ harvesting from prisoners is a great idea.... especially murderers. yes I know that most get rehabilitated, but it is a good way to pay back for the life that you took. Rapists and Pedophiles would also make a great source of organs. Payback for the lives destroyed there as well.

Well, poor people are why the CIA made crack.

It's utterly horrid, honestly. And in a regime where having an opinion can get your thrown in jail makes it even scarier.
If we hurry up with stem cell research (maybe people should write local reps encouragin a loosening of local laws?), then eventually 'home grown' organs will be cheaper than harvesting them from people.
Science could make this horror stop, amazingly.

Why is making a useless liability useful a horror?
If this became SOP, then people would think twice before committing crimes, much like in countries where they amputate your hand for stealing.

You mean the same countires where women have to walk around covered up head-to-toe and be escorted by a male family member? Or the ones where you can be hung just for being gay?
Yeah, great examples to base a law off of

I was illustrating the point that theft is less common there (or is caught less there) because of the punishment ... not comparing social values. If the punishment was more severe you would think twice about committing the crime.

You just have to get to them before the other prisoners beat the bitch-boys.
And, poor peoples' organs are only valuable to a point. Healthy rich people are more realistically a safer bet than someone who could have god only knows what kind of social, mental, environmental, or other diseases.
OTOH, it definitely keeps those bastards in their place.

Not everyone convicted of a crime is guilty. Not everyone who commits a crime is useless.

People already think twice before committing crimes. The cases where people don't, mostly negligence or emotional circumstances, aren't going to particularly be affected by an increase in the punishment.
Typically, people don't commit crimes because they don't care if they get punished, they commit crimes because they think they won't get caught, and they're usually right. That's one of the reasons why murders still happen in U.S. states that have the death penalty.

yeah, that's it ... being poor means that you have to be a criminal. The problem is systemic.

And what did exactly did these Falun Gong practitioners do that makes you feel that they're "useless liabilities?" From the little I've read about them on Wikipedia, their worst crime appears to be eccentricity. Call me crazy, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to treat eccentricity as the moral equivalent of murder or child molestation.
EDIT: I can't believe that El Machinae and I are the only ones who seem to be upset about this.

Ah, sweet youth. Because humor is a defense against powerlessness, laugh at something and you take some of its power over your mind away. Will your outrage be enough to make you go out on the streets when the revolution comes? Or, even more daringly, make you risk your life (and more) to work for a revolution that might never come? If no, then the only difference between your outrage and our black humor is that laughter, like fine wine, reduces our stress levels, while your outrage only increases yours
The things in this world truly worthy of hate, we can not allow ourselves to hate, because when fighting against those things hate and anger might lead us to rash action, to mistakes. Fight calmly, fight coldly, and above all, fight with your purpose keenly in mind.

The interest of the judicial system and police forces now becomes one of convicting people and / or upping the level of punishment for any given crime. The reason being that there is a financial incentive. In other words, you have introduced profit as a modifier to justice.
Not only is that negative in individual cases, but through this suspension of medical ethics, you have provided an incentive not to try and reduce violent crime as a long term goal.
Additionally, promoting the concept that your body is property that the state can divvy up or seize parts of cannot but have a very negative effect on society, both short term and also, very definitely, long term.
Given the disproportion of convictions between different segments of society (read Rich vs. Poor), this is also, in reality, society's rich using the unfortunate as an organ bank.
It is not good.
-K.
p.s. Fangirl - become a gung ho promoter of worldwide human rights, anyway. It's fun and it's your chance to bait some powerful and greedy people.
