Okay, welcome all.
Although there will be multiple IC threads, this will be the single OoC thread.
1. Time
The campaign will start in early 2070. Game time will progress fairly rapidly in some cases, and the players' individual threads will coalesce in Autumn or so.
Because of the many mini-campaigns running on different timelines and gradually flowing into one another, Careful time/date stamping at the head of each post is essential! Long-term campaigns become meaningless when time is too flexible. If your dates are off, I will be asking you to edit them. Numerous free websites will generate an accurate 2070 calendar for you, if that helps.
2. Posting style
Very basic here, but we have some first-timers.
Italicize internal monologues/characters' thoughts.
Player character/key NPC names in Bold.
Time/date stamp at head of post in yellow.
"Regular quote marks around dialogue."
3. Confidentiality
I understand some of you will want to keep some aspects of your characters secret. Feel free to use spoilers and PMs as much as you like.
For my part, however, as a general rule of thumb, I trust players to compartmentalize what they know and what their characters know.
Some threads spoiler everything that not everyone else would know, and that works in most games. The way this will work, however, EVERYTHING would be spoilered until your characters get together a few months from now, and if we were gonna do that, we might as well just play the whole game by PM.
So, I will generally NOT be using spoilers myself. If there is some PARTICULAR POINT that you want kept hush-hush about your character, PM me and I will try to keep it as quiet as is practical.
4. Dice
Everyone will mostly make their own rolls on the honor system, with a few exceptions noted below.
As a general rule, if you think you need a die roll but aren't sure or don't know what to roll or exactly what modifiers to use, GO AHEAD AND MAKE/POST THE ROLL. Asking me what to roll and waiting for my reply and then rolling costs us a day of real time.
Make your best guess, explain what it is, and then post the numbers from left to right IN THE ORDER ROLLED. That way, if I assign additional modifiers, I can lop rolls off starting from the right, and if I assign a bonus, I can roll it myself and tack the results onto the right-hand end.
Example of shooting somebody -
Attribute + skill + specialization + smartlink - target running = 11 dice
3 5 6 3 6 1 1 4 4 3 6 = 4 successes
Notice I didn't say what the attribute and skill levels were - you don't need to - I have your sheets and that lets you keep a bit of privacy.
In this example, if I wanted to add a visibility modifier, I would just erase the last (X) numbers off the right.
And I will be making things like Perception roles whenever I feel like it secretly, although feel free to initiate your own.
5. Karma
Getting it
I will send PMs with karma once a week. The awards will be based on frequency, individual awards, and team awards.
Frequency: You get 2 points for the week if I have never had to wait over 24 hours for your reply to my post. If I wait over 24 hours once or twice, 1 point. More than that, 0 points in this category.
I totally understand that this is a game, not a job. And unless it is extreme, I have no problem with slow posting (at least in the initial stages). The goal here is to encourage frequent posting in a fair manner, not to point any sort of angry finger at those that don't post as frequently.
The criteria for this category will probably change once we are more into a team environment.
Individual awards: Awards for excellent role-playing, guts, drama, and the rest of the list in the book. This may often be zero unless someone really shows me something (but based on the quality of the submissions, I have high hopes that you will give me an excuse to make more generous awards).
Team awards: These are your points for achieving team goals - usually finishing a run, but it could be other accomplishments. These awards may be larger, but they will obviously not be coming up every week.
Note that you are all a team of one to start with, and that this category may continue to include awards for individual goal completions even after we get into a team environment.
Using it
All karma expenditures must be logical and in character. But I am flexible about how you demonstrate this. Some examples -
A) You can refer me to a number of times that you used your gun skill in combat, hence justifying raising it.
B) You can refer me to a number of in-character posts where you mentioned "closing the window on your physics text to answer the incoming call" or "going home to wash off the grime of the run and relaxing in the bath with your physics textbook" and so on, and then raising your physics skill. Thus, if you have some plan to raise something, all it takes is a little color text over a couple of weeks.
C) You can actually hire an intstuctor, use a chunk of game time practicing, and so forth.
So you see there are many ways to easily justify spending your karma. What I don't want is a karate skill just materializing out of nowhere.
All karma expeditures subject to GM approval.
6. Working together - you can lead a horse to water....
One very important thing we all need to remember is that we have the same real world goal - we need to get your character into a shadowrunner lifestyle. Deep enough into the runner lifestyle that they are a member of a team and go on runs regularly and generally all or a big part of their lives underground.
And no matter what I do with my GM omnipotence and the rules of fairness temporarily cast aside, I cannot MAKE that happen. Racked with guilt over past crimes? You could enter a monastery. Family all killed? You could start a community activist group. Wanted for heinous crime? You could turn yourself in and trust the legal system. Mafia wants you dead? You could enter the witness protection program.
The point is, no matter what I do, you can avoid the shadow lifestyle if you want to. But then why would you be playing Shadowrun? I will give you ample motivation and opportunity to select, from a world of life choices, the life of a shadowrunner. But you have to go the final distance through your roleplaying.
By all means fight desperately against the forces arrayed against you. As I said, by doing so you may earn karma and possibly alleviate the negative effects of your 'big event.' But you WILL eventually get hammered to one degree or another (I have to balance those free lifestyles and super generous contact awards, after all!).
And as I said, I will provide opportunity as well as motivation. With your assets frozen and Lone Star sirens fast approaching, you will not have to say "Hey, I guess I'll move to Seattle and become a shadowrunner." There will be opportunities for a more organic transition, provided we both work together toward Seattle and shadowrunning.
(Note - not ALL of you will necessarily have heinous and melodramatic beginnings, just most. I am trying to come up with as wide a variety of motivators as possible.)
7. Three waves
The waves are not a reflection of anything but which stories I think will require the most time in the game world (although my estimates could be wildly inaccurate).
Subject to change at any moment:
First wave
To start no later than July 26 -
Abbandon
pragma
MK Ultra
Ankle Biter
Second wave
To start no later than August 2 -
JDragon
Blue Rondo
Vegas
Mister Juan
Third wave
To start no later than August 9 -
Dire Radiant
BlackHat
Cedric Rolfsson
Konsaki
Apologies to third wavers. But like I said, actual starts will probably be much earlier. The dates above, however, you can bank on.
And sorry about the length of this post. I figured once I put it up it will always be there as an easy-to-find reference, and I can edit it as campaign ground rules evolve.

Well, I followed Blue Rondo's advice, and that worked perfectly. I also cleverly tried to give myself some advice, and you can see how that worked out - the little colon-ooc-colon thing at the beginning of the title.
So anyone that can get that unsightly thing off of there gets a free karma point!

Okay, since we're now officially accepted and all I thought I toss this out and see if it fits anyone else's story line.
My character is going to be pretty active in cyberspace, VR gaming, AR gaming, all that kind of stuff. He's also a bachelor in his early twenties with the normal hormonal urges that flow therefrom and likes the night life. He's based in Seattle so if anyone's characters have similar backgrounds and are interested in seeing if we might know each other in some fashion pre-EVENT let me know.

Don't know if adamu had planned that or not, but I think it would make a lot of sense if we ran into one another at some point.
More details on Adam Lear (anyone can look if they are interested, but for those who arn't, I wrapped it up:
[ Spoiler ]
He's a student (at some university - not sure how they do it in 2070, but I assume the "good" school are privatly owned by megacorps, and that public universities amount to community colleges - also that most have moved to VR classrooms, but alas, I wanted the college theme), and while not particularly "hacky" he's a computer science major, and has a bunch of friends that are into gaming, computers, networks and that sort of junk - including a girl that is a pretty good hacker. He has a lot of friends in a lot of "cliques" but those were the ones that might pertain to you, Cedric.
His commlink is pimp, since he ran into a lot of money, and had his friends mod the crap out of it - but he wouldn't consider himself a "hacker" and really has only used his commlink for some minor mischeif. He's also kind of a ladies' man.

It strikes me that it might be a good idea to get all of the ways our characters could have bumped into one another pre-game out in public. It could be a nice thing to post a short list of keywords about how others could know you. Mine would go:
Close association:
Hartford CT locals, Langley VA locals, foreign service, intelligence community
Distant Association:
Boston Law Community, Tir Tangaire high society, Ireland locals, Frequent Travellers
I could also be off my rocker. Let me know what you guys think.

Hey Adamu/anyone do most people in general use like real world geography of locations to come up with the names for places. Like does Seattle really have Pullyup or Redmond barrens? Or is that stuff part of supplemental material.
I know sooner or later i will have to pin down my characters actual locations like where he lives and where he hangs out.

Close association: doc wagons or the hospital, mixed martial arts fighting or trainnig.
Loose association: my fictional club "rain" where my guy hangs out sometimes.

She works with her father in thier electronic repair store, so if you have any gear that might have been broken, her's is somewhat known in her part of town.
She surfs the matrix, just exploring most of the time. Not getting into too much trouble. She does frequent hacker clubs and chat rooms though.
Sometimes she goes to a dance club called "DDR" with a couple of her friends. They might stand out since they are flagged under the drinking age but still in there under legit means.

Abbandon,
Seattle actually has those locations although not in the SR format. I live in Washington State and have relatives that live in Bellevue just off I-90. I've driven the streets that the books talk about, most do exist.
Puyallup is mostly covered in trees and has some distance between the living areas. In 2055 the Great Ghost Dance dumped all sorts of sludge from Adams and St. Helens, and Rainer on the area and the Exodus from tribal lands filled up the living space.
Redmond is quasi-residental with lots of strip malls and restaurants etc. It too got hammered by the mountains and then a large suborbital hit it in SR world.
Blackhat, in 2XS the University of Washington is still turning out top notch computer programers. Its still owned by the "State" and specializes in computer programs. Thanks for the information - but what I meant earlier was that in the Shadowrun-future, I could see the only "good" schools being owned or at least controlled by the corporations (basically, as training and recruiting grounds). That's fine by me, if it is - I jsut havn't read enough of the SR fluff books to know if that's true or not. =D
Adam's Info
Close association: The seattle college scene, clubs, parties, computers, matrix, anything trendy and new
Loose association: Has held a surprising number of small part-time jobs in Seattle in the last 4 years. Could have run into him almost anywhere (maybe he served your table one night at a resturant or something). If anyone owns a buisness themselves, it might be entertaining if Adam worked there for a brief period before leaving on surprisingly good terms.

Yeah, as for real world locations, as a general rule it's okay to reference them as long as you update them for 2070. Cedric's posts were pretty much on the money (except that the Ghost Dance that blew the Pacific NW volcanoes was well before 2055).
I spent two years at UW, so am fairly familiar with Seattle. In game terms, when I refer to mundane things like street names and day-to-day landmarks, it is probably based on my best recollection of real places. Most "interesting" places will probably be made up.
As the game progresses, we may use actual Internet map resources for reference. Or if you are doing your own research on a location, you can use that stuff as long as you run it by me first.
As for hammering out a lot of specific Seattle locations, I have been waiting until we can all get our mitts on the latest Seattle sourcebook, so that we all have a common reference point.
BlackHat - are you personally familiar with the UW campus? If I make references to places there, will you know what I'm talking about?
As for ALL good schools being corp controlled, a better word would be MOST. Despite corp dominance, the 6th world is an extremely diverse place. Yes, the majority of quality education will be corp, but the world's governments are still players, just not what they were in the 20th century "Age of the Nation-state." I mean, if the United States lost 70% or even 90% of its power, well, even just 10% of the real world US would still be a serious player on the world stage. I see the 2070 UCAS as about 20% of its real world strength. And even so, it is still only the national governments with assets like carrier battle groups, etc. It is just that they are limited in their ability to project power by the economic dominance of the corps.
I noticed there is a lot of trying to figure out if people already know each other. Hmmm. Well, I reckon there are a few billion people in the world, and out of these twelve, two have a very close connection and another pair shares a contact. Mostly, however, I would like you to be strangers to one another when I do finally have your paths cross.
If you REALLY REALLY want to have previous associations, please try to keep it at the passing acquaintance level.

Ooh, what a surprise! This works out well for me, actually, since I'm on summer vacation for the next month and have plenty of free time. By the time I go back to school, the game will probably be fully into the swing of things.
Going along with your advice on dice rolls, Adamu, I went ahead and made a stabilization roll (Medicine 3 + Logic 5, Threshold 2), since that seems to be what the situation calls for.
1 3 (6) 4 (6) 3 (5) (6) = 4 successes.PS: By the way, I'm using
this website for dice rolling.
adamu
Jul 19 2006, 10:15 PM
Blue Rondo - glad the scheduling works out for you.
You needed four successes for that particularly tough stabilization, but obviously you got them. Even without the +2 dice for two nurses and the +5 for the autodoc you can assume you have available in your NYU teaching hospital (gravy as long as you're in civilization).
Dice generators are fine, but I am far too technically inept to understand them, so people can use them or just roll the old fashioned way. Whatever suits you.
EVERYONE - As a general rule for tests, I would prefer you write your IC narrative describing what you DO, but wait for my OOC post on the result of your test before continuing with your IC description of the result. Saves trouble in case I rule a failure for some reason, and also gives me the opportunity to narrate that part myself if there is something really important I want to slip in.
But if you make this next test, Blue Rondo, you can post everything yourself -
To ease the brain hemmorrhage, you'll need a medicine+logic (4) test. You get the modifiers I described, but subtract three dice because this is not an OR. Also,
Important house rule - everyone listen up
I loved the SR3 complementary skill rules. If you have a knowledge skill that you think applies to an active skill test you are making, add half (round down) the rating to your test. I will be kind of strict on these, so be prepared for me to veto them, but they're generally worth a try.

Im gonna attempt to see how much weight my guy is gonna curl. sr4 pg300 carrying capacity. Strength+body(8+6). Each hit adds 10 kilo's. Base strength x10 kilo's.
2,4,5,6,1,2,3,5,1,2,6,6,6,6 (7)
80 kilo's + 70 kilos = 150 kilos
waiting for confirmation.

Alright, understood - I'll post the test rolls and let you to interpret the results. On a related note, since I'm not a doctor and don't know much about medicine, emergency care, surgery, etc., I apologize if my descriptions on medical tests are a little vague sometimes. For example, I don't know how to treat a brain hemmorrhage, but I also realize that just saying "Carla tries to heal the hemmorrhage" is boring. If you have any advice on how to handle this situation, I'd greatly appreciate it. Right now, I usually try to pick out information from Wikipedia or Google searches.
Brain Hemmorrhage roll: Logic (5) + Medicine (3) + Autodoc (5) + Assistance (2) - Conditions (3)
6 4 1 3 4 4 2 2 5 1 3 1 = 2 successes vs. Threshold 4
Question: When spending edge, the rulebook states on p.67
QUOTE |
You may re-roll all of the dice on a single test that did not score a hit. |
Can edge be spent this way after making a test, or must it be declared beforehand? If it can be used after making the test, here's a re-roll. If not, then just ignore these numbers.
2 5 6 5 6 3 2 1 4 6 = 5 successes
Status Notes:
Current Edge: 3/4.

Jul 20 2006, 10:43 AM
Abbandon - thanks for taking my post to heart. I appreciate it. However, for 'fluff' things, you don't really need to wait for me. Go ahead and post.
Blue Rondo - 80% of what I know about emergency rooms is from watching ER. If you are actually doing research to come up with proper jargon for your character, then that is above-average role-playing. Great.
And yes, the rules are clear that you can make that re-roll after the initial test. So you got a total of seven successes and performed a seemingly hopeless stabilization without seeming to break a sweat.
Also, take another look at my previous post on complementary skill use. I posted it when I did because I thought it would pertain to your situation.

Had one question about the campaign rules, and this three-wave start-off plan. When the second and third waves come online, will the characters from the first waves be "on pause" or will their threads continue until all three converge?
Doesn't PARTICULARLY matter to me, except that it would put the later-comers several karma points behind, due to luck of the draw.
And we can't possibly earn the "promptness" points, except by making offhand OOC posts.
Of course, I would hate to see the early comers get distracted or something during the break, so I don't know if I like that idea any better.

4/3 Father. Alec Spiros is kind of ashamed of me, and while he is not after my getting killed, he is not as close as a family could be. He is big on the pirate scene in Europe. He is the young brother of a family of three, the eldest, his brother Orvald, is retired, and his elder sister died at sea when he was young. Heavily cybered he boasts that he is old as his tounge, and 20 years older than his teeth.
1/6 Mother. Sarthiel Spiros. Doting mother, proud of me, but under Alec's Thumb, and unable to help me as much as she would want to. She is a low level mage, perhaps magic 2, she lost a lot of magic potential as she had cyberwork done before she awakened.
3/4 Brother Mateo Spiros, Striking out as a semi-independant pirate, Very Strong, Cybered to the nines, bloodthirsty, but kind of ashamed of his "squishy" sister. Mateo is heir to the Spiros piracy empire, and practices hard.
2/5 Brother Talos Spiros, Working for Mateo as his decker/money launderer, slightly less close to Electra since he tried to do some creative accounting with her cashflow, and she pimp slapped him for it. Still they keep in touch, he used to do her taxes until the laundering incident, and now is working hard to regain her trust. Talos is also an accomplished boat rigger.
2/5 Uncle Orvald Spiros, Alec's Eldest brother. Retired Pirate, Tough as nails, mean as a rattler, but dotes on his niece who done good. Used to live with him. His and kiera' children died in a ship to ship battle durign the Euro wars of the coast of Crete, and since then they have been land locked.
2/5 Aunt Kiera Spiros, Retired Pirate, still keeps her knives sharp. While Orvald is living the high life, she keeps in trim, and still has black combat cyberware installled. Used to live with her.
2/5 Boyfriend, Trevor Brown. A big satyr rugby player who can't believe his luck. Electra met him after the crash, and was impressed with his happy go lucky view on life, and his great prowess err... 'on the field'. Trevor is a gentle giant, and off the field he likes to watch plays and eat at fine restraunts, at least when he can't convince Electra to cook.
4/2 Talent Agent, Sara Smallman (human). After declining a few too many inappropriate advances, Electra decided to go for a female agent. Sara works hard for Electra, but as the biggest female talent agent in the UK, she has not that much time to socialise with her.
1/6 Rachel Frost, Sara's Best friend from school, While Electra hit the stage, Rachel became a minor cube corp. They are always meeting up for drinks/going out on the town. Electra acts somewhat wild and Rachel keeps her grounded.
1/3 Joe Johanson, Dwarf, and Head of Electra's fan club. Computer geek, Sara dosen't really know him, but tolerates his flowers and so forth as he also gets her a lot of free publicity. Also she keeps vaguely in touch as sometimes she can convince him to keep some of the more embarrassing parts of her private life from the public eye.
3/1 Fernandez Depp, often plays opposite Electra, most recently in "Pirates of the Carribean." On the stage they can keep sparks of sexual tension flying between themselves, and they are "officially" dating according to her fanclub, but in reality Fernandes pefers the company of his boyfriend when out of the public eye. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement as neither Electra, nor Trevor want to be seen to be dating, Trevor does not want the attention, and Electra finds the publicity from "dating" Fernandez to be good for her career.

You DID specify that he was your older brother in your submission. That's my bad. Thank you for pointing it out. I have edited it.
As for writing dialogue for NPCs, your guess is correct - it is fine as long as it is fluff.
Anything that simply (and with reasonable justification) makes your character look cool, like Abbandon's weightlifting roll, for example - yeah, I agree with him that you need a roll to curl something over your basic weight allowance, but you don't really need to wait for me for something like that. Just like Ankle Biter didn't wait to post the results of his puke-roll.
Or anything that is relatively insignifcant to the story that keeps the action going. If you've got two things you want to say to Gregor, but you need him to make some conversational respsonse between them, go for it.
In tabletop, the GM obviously always speaks for the NPCs, but in this online format we have to balance that with the desire to make some progress. It is by nature a painfully slow medium, so anything that makes the post cycling more efficient is great ----- as long as it is fluff.
I think everyone has a pretty good idea of what I mean by fluff. But if you are unclear, some good rules of thumb are A) does your action directly impact or impose on another character/the outside world? If NOT, then it is probably fluff. B) Did you initiate the roll, especially for role-playing purposes, or did I make you make the roll? The latter would NOT be fluff, but, as in the case of Abbandon and Ankle Biter, the former is fluff.
Sorry to be so lengthy here, but this is essentially establishing rules for everyone for the campaign as a whole, and I reckon this OOC thread is a good place for that, especially since as long as the thread lives people will be able to refer back to it.
BlackHat -
When subsequent waves come on line, the others will remain in play (individual players MAY be put 'on hold' at times just to get the timelines in sync, but that has nothing to do with the waves). I am sure I will have no problem keeping up with 12 players at once, but I do need time to develop suitable, pre-set, and hopefully enjoyable outlines of everyone's foreseeable future. As soon as I complete the next four outlines, I will start the next wave.
Yes, that means earlier waves will probably end up four or five karma ahead of later waves. I knew someone would bring that up, and believe me I am as much a karma whore as anyone else if it's a character I really like. But I think this is the least evil of a number of imperfect alternatives for how to handle it. And since I plan on continuing the campaign pretty much indefinitely, in the long run that karma disparity won't make a lot of difference.
And if it is any consolation, you can see that I am already a full week ahead of the schedule I committed myself to, and I HOPE to keep that pace up.
Ankle Biter -
I have always agreed with your assessment of modern art - the Pompidou Center in particular sucks - but the Tate really changed my mind. I didn't LIKE all of it, but I gained a real appreciation for a lot of it. You should go (while it's still there).
And nice touch calling for your own composure test.
Everyone -
As stated earlier, it may be about 72 hours until my next post.

I´ll read through the new stuff and give some constructive reply asap, but now I need to return some over-due books to the library.

Any results on the commcalls Electra was trying to connect? I don't see her doing much until one of those come through, and somebody can talk her down some.

Hmmm, so the only way a third waver can win the Karma race is to hope the first and second wavers don't make it one way or another....
Feel free to ignore the madly spinning mental gears, glowing eyes and cackling laughter as I think about this.
