Ignore the superconservative junk on the site. This little bit of paydata was sent to me by my mother, of all people, she thought it would be of use to the Shadowrun community.

Underneath all the political BS, they're talking about a multi-level, 6-10 lane per level, autobahn speedway. I scanned some of the sites they reference and called my congressman about it. Slot and run with it, it's real and expected to be open by the end of the decade. The local chamber of commerce is not happy, because uncle Sammy has declared immanent domain over some of the prime river front property they just so heavily invested in building into a bunch of casinos, condos & convention centers. Even big business can bite itself in the hoop sometimes.

Yeah, right. I'm sure they said the same thing about the Big Dig, and that just runs through one city and was built before the concrete shortage.

That'd be something to see. Really though, there's not nearly enough traffic around here to justify something like that. Maybe if the main route went to TO....

I don't usually like to get political, but that kind of interest in my neck of the woods makes me a little nervous.

Thank you SL.

Never gonna happen. The federal goverment dosent want to spend that kinda money on something as low tech as a big road. Never mind having to maintain it. Emminent domain or not, we are talking billions just for the land.

...the scarier thing is the link to the North American Union page. When I come across the word "secret" in the same sentance with Gee Dub, I get the willies.

...look what he's already done while our backs have been turned.

Of course, no upstanding Canadian citizen will stand for this...right?

...uhh guys, you there...er...what's up with the two black SUVs that just pulled up out front...? eek.gif

I also fail to see the point about Far East (code for China) good coming through Mexico. It's not like they're exempt because they come through Mexico. Unless the author doesn't know what he's talking about, which given his CV is impossible to believe.

Notice how Texas is directly in the center of that highway.

...makes you wonder eh? I'm surprised there isn't a spur heading to Florida or Kennybunkport.

Keep in mind that the largest Airline in the country (perhaps world?) "Ameroflot" has it's HQ and major hub operation in Dallas. I wouldn't doubt if they swallowed up Northwest should things for sour for the Minnesota based carrier. Hell they already chewed up & spat out TWA several years ago (which was once one of America's two top flag carriers to the world - the other being Pan Am).

I hate to agree with SL James, but it won't happen.
From a SR stand point, it really wouldn't happen. Too many countries don't like each other.

Good idea, you know, since I'm never wrong.

IRL its really happenig here in TX. Every Politician with brains around here is behind this thing. 35 is the main corridor from Mexico to Canada and it runs right smack through the center of Texas slowing down local traffic to the point where it is un manageable. There are days when it takes 2 hours to get across Ft. Worth from North to South. And just forget about it when there is a race at the Speedway.

In real life, there's a number of nasty political and economic issues around this thing. I wouldn't mind if it disappeared off the face of the Earth tomorrow.

For Shadowrun? It could be amusing to assume it happened prior to the US collapsing and play with the reprocussions of having a giant highway through the middle of some rather hostile countries.
stevebugge
It's really a secret Aztlaner plot to get the highway built for their invasion of North America, unfortunately they over estimated the efficiency of the goverment and by 20-whatever when they launced their invasion it only went as far as San Antonio wink.gif

It has to come into some port. Currently they are US ports as Mexican roads suck, and the point to point distance is shorter.

But if there is a good roadway from the Mexican port.... It bypasses expensive US ports, it bypasses expensive US trucking and/or rail. The ships sail a bit further, but they are largely foreign, cheaply, crewed.

Also, if you look at a terrain map of the US, goods arriving through Pacific US ports have to cross hundreds of miles of mountain roads. There is barely a hill in the I35 corridor.

It may not be that far fetched. I know construction is underway to extend I69 from Brownsville/McCallister, TX (on the Mexican Border) toMichigan where it can hit I94 into the Detroit, MI/Widsor, ON area and one of Canadas busiest highways running north of the great lakes. The shadowy part of the I69 deal is the government selling the highway to a company that runs toll roads. IIRC, they have already agreed to up to allow a 50% toll hike in the first year after sale and a cap of 15% a year after that.

If it's real, can somebody explain the rational for six lanes leading into Manitoba? I mean, have any of you driven out here? If you have, you'll know what I'm talking about. If no one has, well... that's my point.
child of insanity
is it anything like saskatchewan? if so... indifferent.gif
but ahhh the praries... in bc you fall asleep at the wheel, you hit a tree and you die. there you wake up 8 hours later well rested and out of gas...

..I guess Gee Dub doesn't know (or care) that trains already exist which can carry a lot more freight more efficiently over long distances.

Ahh silly me... of course...100+ semi tractors use a lot more Oil than three or four diesel electric locomotives to haul the same load.

What was I thinking?
Backgammon
Sooo... this is a conservative site, bashing Bush? Is that common?
Kagetenshi
In economic conservative circles, very.

Edit: Kyoto Kid: you might have been thinking that 100+ semi tractors can go 100+ different places at a time while three or four diesel/electric locomotives can only go three or four places at a time, and that anytime you want to add another place you want to go you have to lay down a lot of expensive steel instead of leveraging an extensive preexisting infrastructure.

Not that rail isn't awesome, but it isn't strictly better than road-based freight.

..true, enough. However, better integration between rail & road transport, where trains handle the long hauls and trucks fill in on the local/regional level, is a more efficient solution then building this monster highway (and potential target for terrorists).
