I seem to be the only member logged on to DS right now.

Never seen that before.

The forums are doing some strange things lately. Yesterday I was getting 404'd for any topic I clicked on, but I could view the forum topic lists. Then today, just now while I was browsing I went back to the topic lists and everything was marked read...

[Edit: New =/= read, I guess i'm making mistakes today also.]

Moved to bugs. Related post can be found here: http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?showtopic=16141

Thanks for pointing this stuff out. Per Adam, this stuff is being looked at over the weekend. There was a change made to the software running on the server that houses Dumpshock, so there are a few small things going on.
Demerzel
So what you're sayin is that it is a Bug that the Freelancers hibernate all winter?
bclements
Not a bug, a feature! smile.gif

..ahh, just like all those wonderful Windows "features". I got it.

WOuld you kids knock off all that racket? I can;t sleep over here with all this yellin' and carrying on!

Just want to make sure that no one is under the mistaken impression that this has been fixed.
Demerzel
Yep, they're still snoozing...

Oh, you mean the wacky board stuff...
Erebus
I can only seem to get to the site from my work account. No go from the home comcast thing..

Traceroutes die at the visi-gw from the problem source.

Methinks its a filter or a return path issue.

Moon-Hawk
I tried switching browsers for a day yesterday to see if it helped.
It didn't.
Still doing it. Is there something I could possibly be doing differently to fix this? It's pretty annoying not being able to tell easily which posts I've read.
Adam
I assume you've done the usual stuff like clearing cookies and whatnot? Which browsers have you tried?
Fortune
Well, for myself, I'm using Firefox 1.5.09, and yes, I have done the cookie/whatnot thing to no effect.
Moon-Hawk
Ha! I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.9 as well! Funny. (slightly)
Yesterday I used IE 7.0.5730.11, and aside from some blood running down the walls and thousands of damned souls pouring forth from my computer from some dark place nothing was really different. *shrug*
I thought I had tried clearing cookies, but it turns out I didn't have that box checked on my clear private data option (which I HAD tried, thinking I was clearing the cookies), so I did it now.
Adam
Hrm. I just fired up Firefox -- 1.5.0.9, logged into my other account, hit "mark all as read", closed FF, re-opened it, and everything was marked as read. I waited a few minutes for someone to post to a thread, and then manually visited that thread. It was marked as read. I closed FF again, re-opened it again, and everything was still marked as read.

Wacky.
eidolon
Adam,

Isn't that exactly the way it should function? (Or is that what you're saying is wacky? wink.gif)
Moon-Hawk
I was kind of confused by that too.
Anyway, just for clarity's sake, I'm having problems with
1) Appearing to be the only person logged on to dumpshock.
2) Threads that I haven't read yet becoming marked as "read", 'causing me to miss reading posts.
1 and 2 usually seem to happen at the same time.
3) Yesterday I was also having problems with threads that I had read only very recently being marked as unread, but that was just yesterday so that might've been an IE thing.
Demerzel
I'll chime in and say that I'm having those problems from two different computers.

It appears as if the board is periodically forgetting who is online (and functions like last click show this as well, I don't see how this could be a cookie issue). It also appears that when it does that and I am online it marks everything as read, regardless if I have seen it.

Basically it appears that it loggs me off (As this is what happens when I log off all my unread posts get marked to read so forums I ignore don't permanently show new messages).

Yeah, I'm quoting myself, I know.

Anyway, #3 just happened to me again, with Firefox.
eidolon
After carefully deleting cookies and logging back in (did this on 1/9 IIRC), DSF is working correctly for me. I'm in XP Pro running FF 2.0.0.1, with cookies deleted on every logout but with forums.dumpshock.com as an exception.

Just posting for extra info.
Moon-Hawk
Okay, I'll try switching to FF 2.0.
eidolon
Reminder: If you use "Back", you're going to be looking at a pre-cached page, and the radio lights won't have changed to reflect the fact that you've viewed something. Refreshing will reflect read/unread correctly (assuming the cookie is working right for you).

edit:
This post intended for general consumption. Brought to you by the letter spork.
(didn't want MH to think I was assuming his ignorance; and remember, ignorance is curable, stupidity isn't ... or something like that wink.gif)
Moon-Hawk
Indeed, assuming the cookie is working.

Well, I finally got around to upgrading Firefox on this computer.
Now we shall see.
Moon-Hawk
Got a new version of Firefox. I cleared out all the cookies, all the personal info, started totally up-to-date and fresh.
Same problem.

@eidolon: I did read your last post with sort of a "Is your computer plugged in, Moon-Hawk?" tone to it, but I know you didn't mean it that way. wink.gif
edit: In case that didn't make sense, I'm talking about how when you call tech support and tell them that your internet is down and they ask you if your modem is plugged in and you have to be like, "Can we skip this and please just put me through to level 2 tech support?" Sorry, I'm not making much sense. There's all this blood in my caffeine system and it's time to go home. sleepy.gif

AAArrrgh!!!

Hey, I've been meaning to ask. Is your user name a reference to Asimov's Foundation series?
Demerzel
It is. I liked the concept of a single mind influencing the future history of mankind for millenia and being known to only very few all that time.

Me too.

And eidolon: while I might be old and semi-computer-illiterate, I am not stupid.
eidolon
Guys, I'm not, and was not, calling anyone stupid. Sorry if my joking around made it sound that way. Added "edit" to make it clear that I was trying to avoid that rather than imply it.

MH: Well, you've now gone beyond anything I can help with. Hopefully Mark will notice this thread soon and look at what's going on a bit more closely.

Fortune: Never intended to imply that you (or anyone else) were. My apologies if it sounded that way. It's just a quote that I can't remember the origin of that I think is funny.
Fortune
It's cool. I do know the quote (sorta biggrin.gif ), but I guess I just needed one more coffee before my sense of humor kicked in fully.

But, having said that, I have done all that stuff again, and am still experiencing each and every one of the problems that Moon-Hawk listed above. Not all the time, and not all at the same time, but with enough frequency to be irritating ... if I actually had anything better to do, that is. wink.gif
Sphynx
Just an FYI, there's a plugin for FireFox called IETab that 'simulates' IE. I've found on various other forums that simulating IE is alot simpler than getting things fixed (since I use Firefox exclusively). nyahnyah.gif
Fortune
Well, as was stated above, the problem seems to be happening in IE as well.

But thanks for the link. smile.gif
eidolon
Just an FYI for Sphyx's FYI wink.gif

Using the IE tab in FF completely negates any kind of added security that you're getting from running FF (namely, not running bad ActiveX content, some other stuff that I read about but can't remember right now).

If it doesn't bother you or you're using other measures to protect your machine, it's fine. But anyone that runs FF specifically to get away from holes in IE would be best served by not installing the IE tab extension.
Sphynx
The IETab requires you to specifically state which sites you open with it. It doesn't automatically open all sites with IETabs. I use it regularly to open certain forum sites. Security is only an issue if you use it to open sites you don't know.
Moon-Hawk
Hey, don't worry eidolon, we're just all cranky 'cause Dumpshock is messed up. I didn't even make it halfway through my unread posts this morning before they all got flagged as read. frown.gif

Oi. Thanks for the info. Last time I had been looking into it, it installed into FF, and if you used it once it essentially "opened" IE inside FF, meaning wide open browser.

My default action is "if it won't open and look right in FF, it's not a site I needed anyway". The only time this doesn't work for me is on our office intranet if for some reason I need to access something stored on our lame-arse "shared workspace" or whatever. Then I can use IE with abandon, and believe me, I abandon it as soon as I can. wink.gif
Sphynx
Moon-Hawk, you can fix that by opening the links in a new window. In FireFox, if you have a mouse with 3 buttons, just push the center button. That's how I do it, so the first page never reloads until I finish all my reading. That's the beauty of Tabs. nyahnyah.gif
Moon-Hawk
Actually, no, that doesn't fix it. I already do that, but because even though the buttons are still dark blue after the problem has occurred the "skip to first unread post" button will go to the last post.
Unless of course the first thing I do when I log onto Dumpshock is to open every single thread that I plan to read to the first unread post before the problem occurs, and then read each of my 50 open tabs, but I think that goes slightly beyond reasonable.

quick edit: Rereading that post, I realize it sounds a bit snarky, which I did not intend. I am perfectly willing to modify my browsing behavior to accommodate a new "feature", I'm just letting you know that I tried that already and it doesn't really help. smile.gif
Sphynx
Ah. I never use the 'skip to first unread' button. I have my forum settings to 50 or 100 forget which, posts per page (whatever the maximum amount is). I just scroll down to where the discussion was last at.
BishopMcQ
I threw all the cookies out the window (kept the peanut butter ones in the other room though...)

Using IE 6.0.28 works peachy for me, the souls add to the flavor.

That's pretty much exactly what I have been doing to avoid the problem.

...still having issues with PHP Spell missing the "target" like a "normal" without a smartlink, defaulting from an Agility of 3. Now it is happening on responses I type directly in addition to those pasted in from another source.

It will highlight across spaces between two words or just portions of a word (which itself is spelled correctly) as it did again today.
