Character Description
Rhiannon Cole is a very pulled together woman. She walks with confidence and self-assurance. When she's on duty, she prides herself on looking the part of a Lone Start detective who's going places. Her clothes are always impeccably tailored, her hair is usually worn up in a tight French twist always without a hair out of place. Her nails are always manicured and she pays close attention to making sure her shoes are shined and her gun cleaned.
She’s 5’9 with a curvy, swimmer’s build. She has a fair complexion with sun-bleached blonde hair and green eyes. She typically wears black or darker colored slacks with sleeveless turtlenecks and an overcoat.
Rhiannon is friendly but standoffish. She's the kind of person that would make you feel at ease during a tense situation but you would never invite them to lunch or ask about their personal life, her aura of authority is a little too all pervading.
She's pleasant to be around and is very interested in the people around her, but she has the habit of always asking questions and never really answering any. It's a useful tool for a cop to have, but frustrating for those who try to find out about the "real" Rhiannon.
The only real attachment she seems to have is for her pit bull, A.J. Where some people have pictures of their kids on their desks, she has pictures of her and A.J.
She doesn't date and her personality tends to dissuade any men who might get around to asking.
Character Background
Rhiannon Cole was born Rhiannon Finnegan on October 22, 2042. She was the only daughter of Mary and Ian Finnegan, the then Capo of the Seattle Finnegan family. Shortly after she was born, it became apparent that young Rhiannon was an elf, albeit an elf with very human characteristics; her ears are more rounded then tipped although they do angle upwards like those of an elf, her eyes are the large eyes of an elf but her jaw line is that of a human. She stands a good head taller then most but her frame is curvier then most elves. With her long hair worn down and her sunglasses on, she could pass for a human easily.
Her mother, Mary, was furious. Mary Finnegan was a woman known for her anti-metahuman and anti-Awakened views. Mary had three other children; all boys, all mundane and most importantly, all human. To Mary, Rhiannon was a failure. She ignored the little girl, leaving her upbringing to a nanny and personal tutors, keeping her cloistered within the family estate.
The only outside companionship the young girl knew was that of her cousin, Rowena when she would visit with her father. The two quickly became inseparable, spending their free time plotting against Mary and Ian. The plotting began in earnest once Rhiannon Awakened as an adept at the age of 16. Mary began to look at the girl with pure malice and both girls knew that if something didn’t happen soon, Mary could quite possibly invent some accident to take care of Rhiannon.
And so, by the time the girls had turned 17 and 19, had conned and stolen their way into a nice chunk of change… around 30K.
Rowena quickly came up with a plan for the money. They would use it to free Rhiannon. Using all the contacts Rowena had gathered, they made contact with a decker in the Seattle shadows. Over a period of three months, they paid him to create a new identity for Rhiannon. She would assume the identity of an orphan, using the new orphan SIN registry and applying for a state funded scholarship. Her application and essay were accepted by the scholarship committee and soon, by Purdue University’s Criminal Justice department. With her identity as Rhiannon Cole cemented, Rowena and Rhiannon began to plan for Rhiannon’s disappearance.
Knowing of the little regard for Rhiannon that Mary and Ian had, Rowena and Rhiannon staged her death. After a few days of searching, they managed to find a girl that resembled Rhiannon in appearance. They killed the girl and brought her back to the Finnegan estate, smuggling the body into Rhiannon’s room while Mary and Ian were attending another “Family” function. That night, Rhiannon packed and Rowena set the scene, arranging the room to make it look like Rhiannon set an intentional fire. They doused the room in kerosene, making sure to douse the body completely. Then, they lit the fire and ran. Rhiannon and Rowena fled the scene on foot and hightailed it to a waiting car a few blocks away.
Rhiannon and Rowena said tearful goodbye’s at the Seattle train terminal but promised to keep in touch, using the aliases of Margaret Cunningham (for Rowena) and Ashley Black (for Rhiannon).
The fallout from the fire was not what either of the girls expected. Unbeknownst to either of the girls, Rhiannon’s brother Steven was home at the time of the fire and was killed. Rowena feared that some how their parents would discover their crime but she was floored when Mary and Ian declared the arson the result of the local yakuza clan, the Shotozumi-gumi. The arson and death of Steven was a declaration of war, the Finnegan’s cried and soon the Family found itself embroiled in the infamous Mafia/Yak turf war of the 2060’s.
Behind closed doors, Rowena learned that the family knew that Rhiannon had set the fire in her bid to take her own life, and that the fire had killed Steven on accident, but they used it as a means to an end. Rowena could care less either way. They weren’t looking at her and most importantly, they weren’t looking for Rhiannon either.
The two girls stayed in constant contact via a Matrix drop box writing back and forth as Margaret and Ashley. Rowena kept Rhiannon informed on all the happenings within the family and when Rowena’s father was killed, they planned Rowena’s succession together.
After Rhiannon graduated she applied to and was accepted to the Lone Star Academy. Her grades and attitude were just what Lone Star was looking for and within a few months she was promoted to Detective and assigned to the Seattle Homicide division.
Rowena, thrilled that her beloved cousin was once again going to be close, pulled a few strings of her own, ensuring that Rhiannon was paired with Gabriel Vaughn, another up and coming detective with a history of high profile cases. Rowena figured that if Rhiannon were involved in the types of cases Vaughn seemed to attract Rhiannon would be fast tracked to Commissioner in no time.
Throughout all of this, Rhiannon has developed a love of law enforcement but her first loyalty will always be to Rowena. The two are thick as thieves and even though they don’t see each other as often anymore, their secret communication is as strong as ever (albeit more tightly secured from Rowena’s end). No one within the family knows that Rhiannon still lives and is within the city.
Rhiannon has gone so far as to have subtle biosculpt jobs done to hide any family resemblance and to disguise herself from those who may remember her face from back then.
