Triple Helix finally released in UCAS
Jay Valens
L.A. (Pueblo Corporate Council)

The final act of James Kingston's ambitious simsense trilogy Humanity Beyond has finally hit UCAS and CAS sim-theatres last Friday. Plagued by multiple delays, including the unexplained disappearance of the star of the first two chapters Robert Masterson and his replacement by award-winning Nicky Sitoah (Ivy's Hope, The Bar at the End of the World) for this final installment, Triple Helix is reported to be coming out a year behind the original studio release date. Trouble between Kingston and Amalgamated Studios over stylistic changes the former wanted to implement during editing led to further delays even though the sim has been in post-production since last July.

Rumor has it that Kingston may be breaking his 5 sim-deal with AS over the creative differences and brokering new contract with either MCT's Highstar Entertainment or Ares Global Entertainment. If Kingston does go ahead with the break this will be the third major director to loosen his ties with the L.A.-based studios in the past year.

Despite an initial lukewarm reception by critics, the straight-from-theatres reaction has been extremely positive and the boxoffice seems to back it up with a 25 million nuyen weekend take. Trid pundits have already singled the sim out for a couple of Academy Award nominations which will be announced later this month.

Tsimshian executions trigger Sioux demands for NAN sanctions
James Red Fox
Vancouver (Salish-Shidhe)

Yesterday's execution of four Sioux nationals has brought the Pacific Northwest conflict to a whole new level, as the Sioux Council is now calling other NAN states to approve strict trade sanctions against Tsimshian.

"This is murder, plain and simple. The Tsimshian government has commited a war crime and should be punished for it", said Lt. Abigail Blackthorn, in a Sioux press conference.

"We warned them that we wouldn't tolerate hostile actions against Sioux relief workers. Sanctions are only a first step and we expect that other NAN governments understand this".

Lt. Blackthorn added that the four Sioux were working as volunteers in a Red Cross camp located in Salish-Shidhe terrtory, near the Tsimshian border. While helping some Haida refugees five days ago, Tsimshian forces launched a surprise raid, capturing several people, including the Sioux.

The Red Cross staff was released shortly after, but the four Sioux nationals and five Haidas weren't. Yesterday, the Tsimshian military issued a short press release announcing that they had all been executed by a firing squad.

A martial court found them guilty of performing sabotage and intelligence gathering operations, on behalf of a hostile foreign power, said Tsimshian representative Lisa Greenberg.

"OMI agents and Wildcat special forces should know better than to aid the Salish-Shidhe invaders. Thanks to an anonymous tip from civilians, we were able to track down some of those involved in last month's Kirpatrick Massacre".

Meanwhile, back in Washington DC, the UCAS government expressed its concern for the rapidly deteriorating situation.

"President Haeffner is obviously worried about such a tragic conflict", declared White House spokesman Roger Bronson during the morning press briefing.

"We also concerned about the risks for our fellow Americans in Seattle and we're evaluating the potential reinforcement of Task Force Seattle. Hopefully, the situation -and tempers- will calm down before we are forced to do that".

James Red Fox is an award-winning, international freelancer journalist. Stay tuned for his continued coverage of the Pacific Northwest conflict.

Gaetronics in trouble, Shakeup

The Salish Shidhe council ordered Jason Gray Bear to beef up production at the Spokane facility today. For months energy production from the number one supplier in the northwest has been slipping, causing rolling brown outs all over the region. "It's not our fault, last year was extremely hot, the water levels are down and the Salish Shidhe Council isn't subsidizing us as much as they have in the past few years. It's really their fault," Gray Bear said in way of explanation. The power output of the Spokane geo-thermal facility was at 68 percent of production as compared to last year. Residents in the area are furious. So far no deaths have been reported do to lack of heating, but community activists are sure there are some that have gone un-reported. "My grandfather is old and sick, when his heater cuts out in the middle of the night it doesn't help his pneumonia," commented Sam Two-Trees.

Philanthropist William Feathers has offered to subsidize some power in exchange for GTR(Gaetronics) stock. He is in the middle of negotiating a deal with the Salish Shidhe Council this week. "It could be the beginning of a great era where citizens of a community band together and help there country," said Feathers spoke person. GTR's stock has risen in the last few months as 3rd quarter profits are expected to be high. The price of energy has risen almost 200 percent up from nuyen.gif.2 a watt to almost nuyen.gif 1.20 per. If the transaction between Feathers and the Salish Shidhe Council goes as planned, Feathers could end up with %28 of Gaetronics stock at rock bottom prices.

Wuxing ship contaminated, Imports resume
Static ke'Raeint
Cara'sir (Tir Tairngire)

Wuxing quietly confirmed a joint accusation by the Tir and Amazonian governments. The governments alleged that a cargo container for soybean products was contaminated prior to docking in Amazonia. The megacorp also agreed to pay a restitution fee to the Amazonian producers. The details remain sealed, but officials from both Manaus and Tir's Import Authority (TIA) concluded their investigations early this week and brought them to the attention of Wuxing's Claims Department.

"The insurance restitution payment is negligible," said Amazonia's Industry, Agriculture, and Commerce Minister, Márcio Nogueira Parent, "However, the return of respect and so on of our goods is very well received. We thank Wuxing for this." Analysts debate whether the million dollars of restitution is actually negligible, but most doubt the farmers who need it most will see more than pennies of it.

Wuxing stock was unaltered after news of the internal contamination from the Phakopsora zacharias fungus. A spokesperson for the cargo carrier said that their Incident Report reached the same conclusion as the TIA. The container system had not been cleaned after the last trip as is procedure.

"Maintenance operators overrode safety features to save time. We will now override them," said the spokesperson. Wuxing will buy two new drone cleaning systems from MCT who won the short bidding process.

The TIA also announced the return to random searches, greatly speeding the import process. The purchase of several hundred new scanners from Telestrian Corp which can detect micro organisms, will help prevent biological contamination from entering the nation and aid in reducing delays caused by searches. "Once they are in place, these [scanners] will get the oil flowing again," said a Seattle spokesperson for the Tir based company.

Kelmar drops lawsuit against Aztechnology

Tenochtitlán, Aztlan (Televisa)

Kelmar Technologies, formerly a lead developer in personal security armor, has dropped its ten-years old lawsuit against Aztechnology. The announcement came after Aztechnology lawyers unveiled some last minute shocking evidence in the court room.

Alberto Zumalacárregui, one of Aztechnology's representatives, played a trideo tape, where former Kelmar Executive VP Vincent Pollock confessed to his mistress that Kelmar had actually ripped off Aztechnology R+D division.

Pollock died six weeks ago, near his Toronto estates. His mutilated remains suggest that a wild animal killed him while hunting. However, some corporate analysts believe that guilt had finally overcome him, possibly leading to a suicide.

Aztechnology lawyers have refused to say how did they get the evidence, although they hinted about friendly sources within Kelmar. It's been speculated that Pollock himself delivered the tape, prior to his suicide.

Meanwhile, Kelmar Technologies now faces though times, as an apparently sure-win lawsuit has backfired, costing the corp its reputation and precious nuyen.

Viviana de la Rosa is one of Aztlan's most prestigious journalists. Her exposure of the infamous Ghost Cartels in Colombia earned her the Francisco Pavón Freedom Award. De la Rosa currently hosts Televisa's "Aztlan Today".

Terrorism or not, Tir troubles real
Samantha Sentient
Tacoma, Seattle (UCAS)

I stand on an empty platform. A train, sleek and bright, the latest model Z7, sits idle on the Port-Tac monorail. No passengers will board the train today, nor tomorrow, say rail officials. Only a few, scattered commuters wait in the station trying to find out when they will return home to loved ones. In more ways than one the scene is quite familiar to residents.

Idle, quiet, devoid of tourists and life. That's how locals describe the station's last five years. Tir Tairngire's strick travel laws and closed borders prevented anything resembling a regular schedule of passenger transportation in or out. The station, the monorail, and even the neighborhood were in heavy decline.

"Ya couldn' find a job, nor nothing." Mr. Quincy, a local resident, "Weez all been looking; work ain't nothin' for us. But them keebs see weez get none. Then they say, 'trains coming in.' Everybody's got some work then. But right quick -" He points to the empty station. "- we back to nothin'."

Things began to look up for the area as Tir resumed travel, repairing the line and opening up to tourism. Then, yet another set back hits. A cargo train speeding down the Portland-Tacoma line flew off the tracks in the early hours Monday. Luckily, no one is reported dead or missing, but the resulting explosion and fire severely damaged the rail line.

Conflicting information from the Tir government has caused more than a little confusion about the cause of this latest incident. First attributed to terrorists by the Salish forces that reported it; then blamed on hasty maintenance by Peace Force investigators -investigator who deny even the existence of the alleged terrorist network Rinelle ke'Tesrae that then claimed responsibility for the accident.

Beyond the immediate damage to profits from tourism and refunded tickets, why would Tir terrorists strike a transit line redesigned to save the Tir economy? Despite that Tir has already countered by offering dirigible and ocean cruise passes, analysts predict a significant decrease in overall tourism, for the time being. Cargo shipments are already rolling into the Portland harbors and on the Ressah Maglev line to compensate for the monorail.

The permanent damage to government's reputation might be a factor, but what else?

"Terrorist have two jobs really," says Marko Djurdjevic, a terror specialist. "They have to damage the government's image, and they must make money to fund their activities. It's not cheep running a terror network spanning one nation - much less three."

Did terrorists cause this disaster? Let's look at the facts.

The foreman in charge of repair to the faulty section was the son of a noble. The son lost his nobility status during Tir's grueling and secretive Rite of Progression. He took a job with Monolink Systems with alleged aid from his father. Following the incident, Peace Force officers apparently arrested and charged this suspect, though they decline to announce a date of trial or other details. They do say that the motivation for the crime was greed. Apparently, the foreman bought cheeper materials and made hasty repairs to the long dormant line. Then he pocketed the budget difference. The money, allegedly four million in cash, is unrecovered as of now.

Sounds simple. But wait, there is more.

Three suspects were arrested in Seattle by LoneStar's Terror Task Force on Tuesday. All three supposedly worked for Port-Tac Rail and were accused of overloading the cargo train by several tons, accepting bribes, lying on job applications, and of terrorism - though the last change has been dropped by request of the Tir government. Sources inside the task force indicate that the suspects were actually Tir exiles who found jobs at Port-Tac Rail (a Monolink Systems subsidiary) immediately after arrival in Seattle.

Still not convinced?

The Salish patrol that arrived to investigate the accident reported terrorism as the cause because the train and rail line were on fire following an explosion. They assumed a bomb must be the cause because the train was electric. Where did all the fire come from? The train's cargo was kerosene, which has almost no value inside the nation, and thus no need for import. Yet, a company called Tir N' Out Export Masters decided it should do so, and then valued the cargo at nearly 400,000 nuyen.gif -almost double market value. The company collected the insurance hours after the accident was reported, and literally minutes after payment was received, Rinelle ke'Tesrae made its claim of responsibility. Officials from Tir N' Out Export Masters are also sought for bribing the three Seattle workers. However, investigators can not find a single record of current company employees, buildings, or holdings!

More? Ressah Maglev, Monolink System's main competitor, had a nearly four percent hike in stock price due to the announcement that Telestrain goods would start using their line. A major investor sold all of their stock in Ressah moments after the stock rise. That investor? Tir N' Out Export Masters.

Whatever the truth, Tir is troubled by exiles, imports, and economics. The question of the nation's viability has existed since it thrust itself upon the world eye. Now more than ever, Tir is at a turning point, and for this dusty station in Tacoma, residents are hoping it can make the turn. Even then no one's sure how quickly tourists will line up.

Reporter's Death Remains a Mystery
Mike Parker
Seattle, AP

Sara Bonde, a seven year veteran of the Associated Press Corps Seattle Office, was shot and killed January Fourteenth while investigating a story. Her death brings to four the number of reporters who have died in the field during the past thirteen months. The details of the shooting remain unconfirmed by Lone Star. Witnesses at the warehouse scene reported hearing some kind of altercation between Ms. Bonde and several guards before a heavy gun battle broke out. It is unknown at this time if the fighting was between the Associated Press reporters and the guards, or if some third party was involved. A spokesperson for the law enforcement corporation released a short statement about the case yesterday afternoon, but refused to answer any questions.

"All efforts are being made in an attempt to bring the killer or killers to justice. No further information is avaible about the crime at this stage in the investigation. Our detectives are following several promising leads and we feel confident that arrests will be forthcoming. We at Lone Star believe that every life lost is a tragedy, but none worse than one who's only mission in life was to carry the banner of truth. Our deepest condolences go to Ms. Bonde's family and coworkers in this time of crisis."

Sara Bonde was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and attended school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she earned her degree in Journalism. Ms. Bonde did her graduate studies at Georgetown University where she worked as an associate editor for the student newspaper. After graduation, she was a staff journalist at the Washington Post for four years before joining the Associated Press. Her initial assignments were overseas, although it was her domestic coverage of the SURGE riots which garnered her the Jennings Award for journalism. She is survived by her sister, Lisa.

Morgan Hill (California Protectorate)

Protector-General Saito graced the Morgan Hill detention center early this morning to witness the first official execution of a Protectorate Marine.

Ninoyiya Mitsukuni was sentenced to death for treason against the California Protectorate after releasing video evidence of metahuman rights abuse aboard the prisoner transport trains that he guarded. A registered physician pronounced the soldier dead at 12:02 AM. His body was then cremated according to officials at the detention center.

The video, broadcast live across the occupied territories by the now closed KOVR (Ch. 213), showed rampant neglect and malnutrition of metahumans living in their own excrement. Flesh eating Necrotizing fasciitis, along with Staph and other bacterial diseases were prevalent.

Analysis of the video proved that some passengers had been aboard the train since their arrest over three months ago. The tape also captured the barbaric feeding methods using tainted foods. Protectorate officials quickly claimed that the train had broken down due to riots and they had no choice but to treat the prisoners like animals.

They also shut down KOVR and detained the staff for questioning. Several arrests followed, ending with the arrest of Mitsukuni. All the detainees were brought to the Morgan Hill facility for trial by military tribunals. Of the eleven arrested, three have returned home cleared of charges, four have disappeared, and four are now facing six to eight years in a Protectorate prison.

Friends of Ninoyiya Mitsukuni claim he became increasingly aggravated over the treatment of metahumans, saying death would be better.

Despite this, no UN sanctions or actions have been issued. The world stage is eerily quite over the affair with only the PCC and Tir Tairngire asking for further investigation.

"The United Nations simply doesn't have the time or resources to investigate every sign of abuse across the globe," said UCAS Ambassador to the UN Claude Ross. "California's got some issues but it's a hell of a lot better off than, say, Asmando."

The only other statement came from the office of the Japanese Emperor. It read, "It is a sad day when a warrior is killed for protecting the innocent."

The Lone Star arrested Dr. Douglas Fairchild on February 4th. The Spokesman of Seattle police force and the District Attorney communicated to the media in the following afternoon the charges held against Dr. Fairchild. In the past two months, the Dr. Fairchild have been in touch with one individual named Harry Kenneth. Kenneth is according to the Lone Star involved in an organs trafficking ring, thought to be possibly connected with the famous "Tamanous ring" dismantled in the Salish-Shidhe Council in the late 40ies. The Lone Star admitted ignoring the current location of Mr. Kenneth, and chose to arrest Dr. Fairchild directly as he could possibly give access to dangerous or precious medical equipment.

The Dr. Douglas Fairchild first came under the spotlight as he presented the report of the North American Association of Technologies for Organisms' (NAATO) team that investigated the possible biological attack on the Salish-Shidhe Council that occured in May 2062. The NAATO is an independant organization funded by the professionals of the biotechnologies' sector, such as Universal Omnitech, CrashCart Medical Services and Kyuusei Medical. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) of Atlanta, of which Dr. Fairchild was also a correspondant, didn't commented the event. They however asked the Salish-Shidhe Council to quickly allow another expert to continue Fairchild's work for the CDC concerning that same biological attack in the field.

Transys Neuronet and Erika Telecom Announce WMI joint-venture
Jean-Luc Blanchet
Paris (France)

European markets opened today with a heavy round of trading after the surprise press release put out by Erika Telecom yesterday which put end to months of speculation over a possible joint-venture with Saeder-Krupp on the Scandinavian Wireless Matrix Initiative.

The Finnish telecom and matrix-tech giant announced that weeks of confidential negotiations with various potential partners led to a deal being signed not with the German triple-A, but with Transys Neuronet. The contents of the deal were not made public except to confirm that the joint-venture directly involves expanding and develop new soft- and firmware for the WMI and would include multiple smaller development companies beyond the two matrix giants.

No comment has been forthcoming from S-K representatives or Public Relations departments but one must assume the setback will cause an internal shakeup. The rumored negotiations between Erika and S-K were viewed as an essential element of the German megacorp and its subsidiaries mid-term strategy to maintain dominance in the European MSP and infrastructure sectors after the advent of WMI technology due to be beta-tested early next year and hit the market by the end of '64.

The next generation non-modular linkage systems that are the building blocks of the WMI project (partially sponsored by the Scandinavian Union) could represent a massive restructuring in the MSP industry, as well representing billions of euros worth of hardware upgrading that will flow back to the patent and rights holders for the technology. There is no doubt that Transys has achieved a massive coup while expanding its corporate profile and doing justice to it's image as a cutting edge developer of matrix technology.

Karen Hilliard, Transys' PR manager commented, "We are very pleased and proud that Erika Telecom has chosen us as partners for this innovative and ground-breaking technological venture. Transys will be allocating significant resouces from it's Silicon Glen facilities and openning completely new instalations in the Scand Union to better support the development process of the WMI. We believe the next generation networks that will emerge from this collaborative effort will represent a quantum leap in industry standards and will revolutionize both market expectations and the international landscape of current matrix service providers."

Answering a question about Transys long-term plans and possible expansion into the MSP field, Hilliard added, "As you probably all known, Transys has been running a private Grid and MSP service in certain areas of Great Britain on a strictly test-basis, so an expansion into the field would not come out of the blue, although I can say that no such plans are on the board for the near future."

Both Transys and Erika public stocks have shown significant rises on the Paris Central and London Exchanges since the early morning and look to make more gains as further details of the deal are made public.

USS Koontz To Stay Around
Carl Salles
Seattle, UCAS

The USS Koontz and its group will depart from the Naval Station Everett in early March, but will stay in West Pacific. The Admiral H. Jackson made no mystery that the Koontz had to be here "should anything happen in the crisis seats that are Tsimshian, California and as far as South America." Most analysts points out that the Pentagon is paying more attention to the coming events in the north of Aztlan, on its border with the Pueblo and the CAS. Interrogated on this, the Secretary of Defense Michael Broeder indicated that no specific course of action had been decided at the moment in Washington concerning any military intervention. "The Armed Forces simply keep ready. It's just that when our Navy is only aware, it still has a firepower most countries would take months to assemble." This is likely to be the last depature of the Koontz before a long maintenance of its nuclear reactor that should start in the two coming years.

The USS Leonard Koontz is the Navy's third nuclear supercarrier of the Powell class. It is stationned at the Naval Station Everett since after its commissioning in 2030, where it replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln. Its accompagnying combat group counts two frigates and two destroyers.

Drummer's death work-related
Samantha Sentient
Downtown, Seattle (UCAS)

The packed courtroom of tear filled fans and friends sighed audibly as the grand jury rendered its verdict. Jimmy "the Destroyer" Neutron died of accidental overdose while acting as an agent of Amalgamated Studios.

The long time drummer for Speed Coma - an all elven, deathcore band - collapsed following the group's live performance Friday night. Rushed to the hospital, Jimmy was given expert magical and medical care. However, doctors reported that excessive cyberware and the long term effects of reflex enhancing drugs damaged their ability to resuscitate the artist.

Replacing the bands original drummer after his death, Jimmy's career spanned nearly five years and included twenty cyber modifications. The band physician testified that maintaining the biological balance had become nearly impossible and that Jimmy's dedication to speed made this event inevitable.

The grand jury's verdict means that Jimmy's wife will receive a severance pay, and the record label's insurance will cover funeral costs.

Speaking before those gathered at the hearing, band mate Kojo said, "Jimmy was the best; we could never ask for a better friend. He gave it all for Speed Coma. Being a drummer for us is the hardest job, the blood, sweat and all. Jimmy's got a place in our hearts."

Asked if the band would continue its three month tour, Kojo replied, "I think so. We're all broken up, but we never give up. Jimmy wouldn't want us to stop now. Speed Coma's always been about moving forward."

If the band finishes the tour, they will rely on back-up drummer Hanz ke'Mercury. Hanz is considered by many the fastest drummer alive. The band will hold auditions for a permanent replacement later this year.

"In some ways Jimmy's death validates Speed Coma; it makes them edgy again," said music critic Peter Bergting. Tickets for the tour are sold out and parent company Amalgamated Studios has indicated it would like to see the tour continue.

Inquest into shooting by Auburn police to start
Seattle Intelligencer Staff
AUBURN DISTRICT, Seattle

An inquest begins today into a shooting in which an Auburn District Lone Star officer killed a motorist he had detained as a suspected BTL dealer.

Officer Phil Stelpac shot and killed Mohammed Rojam on January 31, allegedly because the man tried to run the officer over with his vehicle.

Stelpac's gunfire also wounded the man's girlfriend, a passenger in Rojam's vehicle.

Videotape of the shooting is expected to be a key part of the inquest hearing. All Lone Star patrol cars are equipped with video cameras.

Lone Star has said Rojam was under surveillance by Lone Star and UCAS drug investigators. Stelpac was one of the officers who stopped Rojam's Chevrolet SUV about 7 p.m. that day as part of that investigation.

As more officers arrived, Rojam began to drive off. Police say he tried to run Stelpac over, but Rojam’s girlfriend has disputed that account. She claims Rojam just wanted to get away, and that the officer jumped in front of the SUV.

Humanis Policlub candidate arrested
Associated Press
COEUR D'ALENE, Salish-Shidhe

Bail of $50,000 was set yesterday for a Humanis Policlub member running for a seat on the Hayden City Council. He who was arrested for investigation of malicious harassment.

Victor Roman Bicks, 24, arrested Friday, was accused of attacking a Hispanic man in a grocery store parking lot. Malicious harassment is a hate crime in Salish-Shidhe.

"I disagree with the charges," Bicks said during his initial court appearance yesterday in court. "I'm not going anywhere and I can beat this case," he said.

Magistrate Judge Raul McMaster set bail and scheduled a preliminary hearing in two weeks.

Bicks lives with Humanis Policlub official Jason Taylor, who is running for Hayden mayor on today's ballot. Another Humanis Policlub follower, City Council candidate Kyle Gross, also is on the ballot.

The Humanis Policlub is an anti-metahuman, human supremacist organization.

Local law enforcement officers allege Bicks punched Patrick B. Relight, 20, of Hayden, in the face after asking him if he was Elven.

Bicks has contended his Halloween night arrest was a ploy by his election opponent, Councilman Chris Bicks, who is not related to Victor Bicks and doesn't share his views. Chris Bicks, a Hayden geotechnical engineer, said he had nothing to do with his opponent's arrest.

According to the officer’s report, Relight was parked at Albertson's about 4:15 p.m. Friday when a silver Ford pickup pulled up next to him in the parking lot. Two men wearing black jackets with Humanis Policlub insignia got out of the truck and pointed to a sticker of a Tir Tairngire flag on Relight's window, the report said. Victor Bicks asked Relight if he was Elven, and when Relight said yes, Bicks swung at Relight's face, grazing his chin with a closed fist, the officer’s report said. The other man, who was not identified, told Relight, "You better watch yourself, we know your car and you better get out of town”, the report said. Bicks and the other man then fled in the pickup. Police arrested Bicks at Taylor's home, and then booked him into the Kootenai County Jail.

Bicks said he moved to Hayden from California about a year ago to live with Taylor. He said he got involved with the Humanis Policlub while serving jail time and that he had an uncle who was a member in the 2040s.

Tribal educators raise questions about Lewis and Clark
Different perspective taken to famed expedition
Becky Cook, Associated Press
BILLINGS, Sioux Nation

In Joe McGeshick's classes, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark aren't presented as the larger-than-life heroes some of his students at Fort Peck Community College read about in high school. Neither is the Native American guide Sacagawea.

McGeshick is among the tribal college educators bringing the expedition story to students in a different way -- blending art, oral traditions, and native culture with mainstream history and even myth to give them a fuller picture.

"It's time to look at a multifaceted view of all the people on the expedition, their strengths and weaknesses," McGeshick said from Sioux Nation. "There's a tremendous role that tribal colleges can play now, and I don't think you can downplay it."

Tribal colleges traditionally have infused a tribal perspective into their teachings. And with the 260th anniversary of the famed expedition just months away, some educators -- particularly those along the trail blazed by Lewis and Clark -- see a prime opportunity to better engage their students and to reach out to a curious public.

The topic isn't a new one for tribal colleges. It has been explored to varying degrees in a range of classes, from Sioux history and Native American studies to art and literature, even as many tribes consider the expedition a minor detail in their own histories.

While much of UCAS celebrates the expedition, many Native Americans view it as turning point in their history. Many see it as the beginning of the end of their way of life.

Marvin Weatherwax said a class devoted to Lewis and Clark is being considered for Blackfeet Community College at Browning, where he teaches on the expedition and the aftermath as part of Blackfeet studies.

"Tribal colleges really don't shy away from it," he said. "A lot of people don't necessarily like it, but want the right story told."

Educators such as Karen Paetz don't rely only on textbooks, drawing instead from more unconventional sources, such as the land and people, to teach lessons.
Field trips to historic forts along the Missouri River and discussions with elders, the "doctorates of the culture," are part of regular studies in Paetz's tribal tourism program at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, N.D. Graduates of the program may be among those working for tour companies, tribal groups or the National Park Service next year as visitors begin arriving in the state for the bicentennial.

Studies, she said, also include tribes and myths and legends.
One concept the tribal tourism program, which goes beyond Lewis and Clark, is based on is the "need to articulate our own history, for ourselves," said Paetz, tribal tourism director and instructor. But it's also important to be aware of the "non-native" perspective, she said.

"There are many controversies in history, and history is only interpreted with one's background knowledge," Paetz said. "With every passing generation, we're one more generation removed from the pristine oral history of our tribes."

Although Lewis and Clark set off on their cross-country journey almost 260 years ago, disagreements still arise today about details of some of their encounters, personal histories -- particularly of Sacagawea -- and the effect of the expedition.
The explorers spent a winter in present-day central North Dakota with Mandan and Hidatsa Native Americans. Hidatsa oral history says Sacagawea, an interpreter and guide on the journey, was a member of that tribe, a claim disputed by many.
Marilyn Hudson, administrator of the Three Affiliated Tribes Museum at New Town, N.D., said she has given presentations at Fort Berthold Community College. She said tribal oral history has "little about Lewis and Clark being anything more than wayfarers traveling through”.

Oral history for the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara does not ascribe heroine status to Sacagawea, she said.

"You think her role was certainly glamorous," Hudson said, “but she's a product of former Americans seeking to create legends and heroines."

"I think her role was very harsh as a woman or girl growing up in this area. I think for a lot of tribes in the area, life here was difficult," she said. "Just think of what North Dakota winters are like."

McGeshick, who devotes time to Sacagawea in a class on myths and legends, said art played a part in establishing the larger-than-life roles that Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea now hold in the minds of many.

But McGeshick, like other educators, provides students with a broad range of information and perspectives in hopes of expanding their view of the expedition and their understanding of tribal history and other issues.

Chuck Braithwaite, who is researching how tribal colleges approach the subject, agrees providing different points of view on the expedition is a positive thing.
"Nobody's saying that one perspective is the truth with a capital T," he said. "But I think the more perspectives we get, as with anything, the more we understand the real significance in our lives."

Deirdre to tour outside Tir
Static ke'Raeint
Cara'sir (Tir Tairngire)

Tir's sultry pop queen announced her intention to tour in support of her world debut album Áitiú. The charts in Cara'sir still have three singles in top positions after months on the radio. And North American radios play her "Tell Me What You Want" single with continuous, rapturous response.

It seems the world could use a dose of this eager young lady and her hopeful music. "I'm trying to capture the sense of promise, and put everything that's negative to the side. Burn down the barriers, you know? We can't sit hiding. Anybody can make it to the top," said Deirdre at the press release.

She should know. The artist grew up in some of darkest corners of Cara'sir. "Her rise to the top is a tribute in itself to the bright star of Tir Tairngire," said Alames ti'Mira, a spokesperson for High Prince Lugh Surehand.

When asked if she considered herself a rebel, Deirdre replied, "I don't plan on throwing away everything Tirian. I love so much of Thelem, and it has so much to offer the world. We can all benefit from love and wanting. But I'm not going to refuse all there is outside for it."

Deirdre submitted requests to the government earlier this month for the tour. The immediate approval of the plans to tour outside the nation's borders only furthers the evidence of a willingness for Tir to step back into the world community.

"Deirdre is not privileged anymore than you or I," said Alames. "We can come and go as we please, but rules of etiquette still apply. You have to ask to leave, but it is simple to do so. Tir is not a prison."

Blizzard Target: UCAS & Quebec
Christie McMahon
Boston, UCAS

There are few years without and a lot of years with. 2063 will be one of the later, as a snowstorm paralyzed the East Coast from Providence to Quebec City for five days. The most tremendous effect was undoubtly the power cut in Boston area that put the Stock Exchange servers offline for several hours. The backup power generator in the basement of the BSE building, which should have prevented that situation, seemingly had a critical failure. This caused a rush on the European and Japanese financial places.

25 people died, 9 of them in Montreal during the most violent part of the snowstorm. According to Shiawase Envirotech and Artemis Meteo Services, both taken by surprise by that outbreak, the most probable explanation is the summoning of one or several Storm Spirits in the area. However the experts from Ares-Apple MeteoComputers don't share that point of view. The Quebec Gendarmerie nevertheless opened an investigation. Lone Star Security Services, the parent company of Gendarmerie SA, sent several experts of its paranormal branch from Atlanta to assist, but refused to comment the progress made.

Traffics on roads, railways and in airports were as expected in such circunstances severely disturbed when not impossible, and schools and similar services closed in most area. Although New York haven't been caught in the worst of the blizzard, more limited snowfalls caused delays in the air traffic, having repercussions in airports all around the world. The estimated cost currently reaches 25 millions nuyen. Because of its regular return, it had little effect on the stock markets, with two exceptions: emergency and firefighting services Franklin Associates which according to experts provisioned too little money for such operations for the year 2063 lost 9.1%, and Gaeas Airlines which had already lost 5.5% in the previous week lost 12.3% more.

Red High Problems
Ray Brannigan
Everett, Seattle (UCAS)

The latest craze and a major success story among BTL-users, one that is threatening to tear apart the clandestine BTL-trade in Seattle, are the so-called Red Highs - low-cost and high-yield emote-loops coming from Russia via Vladivostok.

The first reports to reach Lone Star of a whole new wave of BTLs undercutting both CalHot and KongChip markets came in almost 6 months ago. Despite warnings from the DEA, at the time Lone Star apparently flagged the occurrence as a one-shot overdumping of production by Russian Vory through contacts in the Seattle Seoulpa Rings. However, the problem has only intensified over the intervening months and now looks to be the primary cause behind the increased gang and mob-related violence felt in Everett the past couple of months.

Red Highs are being have street corner prices around half the going tabs of standard BTLs and 2/3 the price of CalHots, and causing serious losses for both the local Chiarnello Mob and the Yakuza triggering clashes between the two and small time independents. Chipheads seem not to care about the high percentage of duds and looped chips that make up a significant part of the sales. However sources within the Star remain unperturbed with the human cost and have likened the trend with the 2XS craze of '53, saying,"It'll die down in another six months. It's just the new next big thing. We're far more worried about the gang violence escalating; there's a RaGe emotechip for instance can has particularly dangerous results in the hands of gangbangers and thrillers, don't even get me started on some of the more twisted emoteloops."

Despite the increasing tension Red High distributers and dealers have remained strangely elusive and hard to track, although it is undeniable that the products continue to flow onto the streets in spite of growing opposition from both the Mob and the Yakuza.

Though official Lone Star spokespeople were unavailable for comment, the DEA Seattle office did have this to say about the situation, "We are worried with the degree of sofistication the Red High chips show and its surprisingly successful and elusive distribution network warrants further investigation. Rest assured that we will be looking into the matter, even if our corporate counterparts do not."

Jogger bitten by Lone Star dog files claim
Insurance official says, 'We just want to make it right'
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

EDMONDS -- An innocent jogger who was bitten repeatedly by a Lone Star dog that was subsequently euthanized has filed a $520,000 damage claim against the city.

The claim, filed by David Tremmel of Everett, is at least the third stemming from the biting of innocent people by Sali, an 8-year-old German shepherd.

On Jan. 28, Tremmel was jogging in Everett near the home of Everett Lone Star Officer Sandra Lohan, Sali's handler, when the dog got out of a back yard kennel and attacked, biting her legs, back and shoulder.

According to the claim, the dog walked away after the initial attack and then came back and bit Tremmel again after she tried to get up. She eventually crawled through a drainage ditch and walked about a quarter-mile to her home after she was out of the dog's sight.

The Everett District Lone Star Chief, who said Lohan was away at the time and would not be disciplined, acknowledged that the claim was filed but would not comment further.

Bo Braugham, executive director of the Seattle District Insurance Authority, which handles liability insurance for the Everett District, indicated that the case would probably be settled in negotiations.

"This isn't the kind of case that will ever make it to a courtroom," Braugham told The Seattle Intelligencer. "The facts are pretty clear," he said. "It's unfortunate that this happened, and we just want to make it right" with the victim.

Sali was quarantined a day after the attack and was put down in early February after veterinarians told police that he was likely to bite again.

Officials acknowledged that Tremmel was the fifth innocent person the dog had bitten in as many years.

Phil Summers, a lawyer, said he is preparing lawsuits on behalf of two other victims, an Everett girl who was 15 when she was bitten in April 2057, and Carl Logan, an Edmonds Community College student who was 19 when he was bitten in March 2058.

The city has rejected a $1 million damage claim filed by Logan.

Boston SE returns on a high after blizzard of the decade
James Royce
Boston (UCAS)

Realtime trading returned today to the floors of the BSE after two weeks of quasi-paralysis due to the exceptionally hard Winter weather that has ravaged the Eastern seaboard. Difficult access and complications resulting from the electrical storm that lead the recent blizzard brought the BSE to an almost standstill and have caused an estimated overall 1.3 billion nuyen in damage to the UCAS.

Despite the continuing cold weather trade resumed on an upswing today with Ares Macro and GM floating stocks reaching 12 month highs following their fourth quarter turnaround announcements in late-January. GM in particular has seen some significant trading following rumors of a possible leveraged takeover of small Spanish-Morroccan LaForja Motors. Some analysts predict that the management buyout will allow the Ares subsidiary to make inroads into the important secondary Magrib and African markets - particularly interesting for it's offroad and load carrier lines - which so far have eluded non-local corporations. However there are also signs LaForja may be looking for a white knight in the form of either the Eurocar Consortium or Fiat-Renault, both of which had previously expressed interest in the LaForja.

In North Am the resolution of UniOmnitech vs. Genetique in Ute courts in favor of the Aztech subsidiary came as no surprise to anyone but has still prompted a small drop in UniOmni stock. The court case regarding patent rights over modified Brennan phage strands used in retroviral and cyberware rejection treatments has been going on since September with UniOmni claiming Genetique's product is identical in 12 different DNA markers to their recently released version and could only be the result of industrial espionage. The fact that Genetique's patents were established in the Ute set the stage for what many believe was a biased court decision pressured by the local authorities.

Although we've seen little movement in the energy sector of late the news coming in from the Genebra Exchange and Kyoto will certainly be affecting some North Am stocks in the coming weeks. Krupp Constructions new deal with the Thai government to build and maintain an offshore tidal generator follows news that negotiations are ongoing with Constantinople authorities for a similar project in the eastern Mediterranean. Security on the later project remains the main issue of contention given the unstable situation in Turkey and the ressurgence of Islamist militant activity in the region, purportedly supported by the NIJ.

Back in the UCAS tech stocks have shown the least growth, possibly as a consequence of the negative predictions regarding SOTA developments in the coming quarter. Novatech, Renraku, Microdeck and Turner have all announced production delays in many of their releases, partially due to the extreme weather we've been facing and in the case of Microdeck due to the loss of two leading members of their R&D department earlier this month in a freak car accident in Seattle.

That's all for this week, more news to follow.

The Last Mexican hits sim-theatres nationwide
Jay Valens
Los Angeles (Pueblo Corporate Council)

Acclaimed international director and Aztlan expatriate Pedro Cordoba's controversial new production will be hitting 'trodes across North Am this week. Brought to premience with the indy sleeper hit "Changing Color" in '61. Cordoba landed a production deal with Dreamscape Productions and has been in studio for the past 8 months working on what critics are already calling his masterpiece, "The Last Mexican".

The sim uses state of the art special and magic effects to frame and bring to life the semi-biographical tale of Cordoba's recently deceased brother, a soldier of fortune by profession and a rebel and patriot by vocation. The admittedly romanticized life of the character is told entire in first person POV and eeriely though the main character is never named we get to know him inside and out through the 12 crucial moments in his life the sim recounts. These include the death of his (and Pedro's) father at the hands of an anti-sedition hitsquad in Technoctitlan, his recruitment by the Yucatan rebels, his idolatrization and eventual falling out with an older rebel officer, his difficult first operations as a mercenary, his tense meeting with his mother and brother in CalFree and even his long-term relationship with a fellow officer under his command.

The sim has been lauded as a breath of fresh air with its realistic and humane portrayal of the life of a mercenary and looks to be a major hit at the boxoffice strictly on word-of-mouth. This despite the absence of a major publicity campaign by Dreamscape which according to rumor is looking to fight off a hostile takeover attempt by Amalgamated Studios.

At the press conference yesterday afternoon, prior to the sim's premiere, Cordoba announced that an ebook deal is being readied for the publication of his brother's real life journals - 10 in all - as a series published by Carter Publications Inc of Pueblo. However sources confirm that at least one injunction has been filed with the PCC judiciary against the move apparently by the former lover of Cordoba's brother who does not wish the private and intimate details in the diaries made public.

Seattle's Mercenary Blues
Samantha Sentient
Fort Lewis, Seattle (UCAS)

What a great time to be a mercenary: movies to glorify the mission, wars and chaos cropping up everywhere, and an over-abundance of airspace access. Well, all things change, so they say.

The public's recent love affair with the solider of fortune is one part media induced spectacle and one part romanticized purpose for an increasingly purposely populous say psychologists. But who listens to them anyway?

Mercenaries pack the small bars all along the Sec-Tac stretch despite UCAS military attempts to confine them to Fort Lewis. Yet, wherever you see mercs, a few Military Police can be seen, standing casually in the background. Subtle reminders, is the official statement. But who reads those?

The tension around every open airport in Seattle is high, but nowhere higher than the bars of Fort Lewis. Smokey rooms filled with muscular men and women drinking synthol straight from the plastic, waiting for orders that can send them to war at any second may sound daring, perhaps even romantic. But to the MP's and EMT's that patrol the "hot zones" they are a growing hazard.

"Seattle's at its limit. We've got whole platoons flying in and out constantly. Something's got to give," said UCAS military spokesperson, Maj. Richard Terramae. "Injuries are up; our forces are tense and stretched."

Apparently, the Governor agrees. Starting next week the government will enforce a quota on the incoming mercenary companies. The plan is to slowly reduce the number of independent contractor platoons to one-third the current numbers. This would significantly increase the ability of law enforcement and military forces to contain and monitor the groups.

The mercenary's corporate and governmental sponsors have already petitioned Seattle courts to delay the plan's deployment and will likely receive a temporary stay. However, they know how unpredictable the courts can be, and have also asked surrounding areas for assistance.

There is no lack of landing spots in the SS Council, but there is a lack of support structure, and honestly, a severe lack of good nightclubs.

Of all the nations to offer airspace and landing rights, one might have expected Tir Tairngire last. But the ruling council granted rights almost immediately for Portland’s airports. Economists and military analysts point to that nation's ongoing troubles as a reason. They can have profits from the tourism and taxes, while keeping a second military on hand in a city already under martial law, say leading Tir specialists. But who listens?

For mercenaries returning to Seattle from the Tsimshian boarder, medical and restorative facilities are a huge factor. They say Seattle is the one city equipped to handle those kinds of treatment and near enough for redeployment. North Vancouver is struggling to fulfill the role, but its people are apparently not so willing to see the wagers of her wars judging by recent protests there.

It remains to be seen if Portland can handle this role. Well, all things change.

Downtown Hong Kong hit by suborbital emergency landing
Jack E. Chan
Hong Kong Free Enterprise Zone (NewsNet)

Panic, chaos and destruction ruled the day in Hong Kong, as Nippon Imperial Airlines' Flight 4444 made an emergency landing in the city's busiest commercial sector. More than 150 people died, hundreds were injured and untold millions of nuyen were lost, as the suborbital trampled over more than two miles of Hong Kong's streets before coming to a eerie halt.

Paramedics, firefigthers and rescue crews arrived in less than 10 minutes, while security forces quarantined the area as a cautionary measure. Miraculously, more than half of the suborbital passengers were still alive.

It's been reported that Hong Kong International Airport's control tower received an emergency transmission from Flight 4444, asking for an emergency landing after a gunfire battle between terrorists and private security forces erupted in mid-air.

The suborbital's pilots were killed in the gunfight, causing the plane to plummet until it was stabilized by a still unknown passenger. Unfortunately, Flight 4444's course had been drastically affected, so Hong Kong became a desperate last measure.

HKIA authorities have refused to confirm or deny allegations that a dracoform was responsible for the massive engine damage easily seen by journalists. "Such bizarre rumors are just that, and they should be treated accordingly".

Flight 4444 links Seattle (UCAS) and Chiba (Japan). The passengers' relatives can verify their status here, although some bodies have not been found so far, most notably those of Takakage Watada and his bodyguards. Mr.Watada (42) was a prominent businessman in Chiba's corporate community, and is survived by his wife and two children.

I have to admit, the idea of eating extremely expensive, gourmet food while watching open-heart surgery live and in person had never occurred to me. In truth, the first time it was suggested to me, I nearly gagged. However, after eating at L'Hôpital, I can say I was wrong. The experience is very entertaining and provides no end of conversation. A definite place for first dates.

There's something magical about eating chilled monkey brains and calamari while watching trauma surgery. Sipping white Zinfandel and snaking on tasty bread sticks with a twisted and broken body splattering blood as doctors try hoplessly to put it back together. The food is par for Seattle as is the price (about ¥500 a plate), though it is mostly real as well.

You can watch from above, below, or even in the room - though the latter requires waviers and such. The dress code is strictly hospital issue, even for the snooty servers who spend far too much time helping the doctors. Music and lighting suffer as the restaurant is located in an actual hospital.

I recommend Friday and Saturday nights for extremely bloody dinners (accident, shooting victims) and mid-week for surgeries (open-heart, transplant). Sunday and Monday have a high rate of drug overdoses. L'Hôpital serves dinner everyday from Noon to 8PM. You can schedule dinners and dinner parties around surgery of family or friends. The restaurant is a product of DocWagon.

The only real drawbacks are the price and sterile smell of everything.

(On a scale of 1-5 Nuyen, 1 being lousy and 5 being exceptional.)

Burglary at Edmonds Instruments

Lone Star estimate 450.000 nuYen worth of computer and electronics
equipment was stolen in a burglary at Edmunds Instruments in Snohomish.

A Lone Star spokesman said that, once inside the building, the burglars
removed a large number of computers and several key components of a
research mainframe.

Lone Star estimated that a team consisting of several burglars entered the
building through a roof access hatch shortly after curfew. Once inside the
burglars deactivated several building security systems and gained access
to all offices.

The burglars systematically removed all computers and electronics
equipment from the offices, moved it down to the kitchen entrance and into
a large truck.
