Full Version: Whatever happens to GE in SR?
Sorry if this has been answered already, or is in a book I don't have, or a part I might have skimmed over, but does anybody know what happens to General Electric? You guys have heard of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, in Washington, and how it is supposed to be worse than the Chernobyl incident, right?
Probably got bought out by Ares.
GE is mentioned in the CC somewhere. However, Seattle's power is provided by a Shiawase Atomics Nuclear Plant in Glow City, Redmond and a Gaeatronics Fusion Reactor in Olympia, SS-Council.
General Electic and Ford are both gobbled up by Ares.
Thanks for the info guys. What prompted the question was that we were talking about how GE produces atomic weapons, etc, in my sociology class. I got to thinking that the Hanford facility would be a neat run. I can't be the first person to come up with this idea, can I?

GE appears in the Cannon Companion for the "GE Vindicator Minigun". As for the power plants, GE sure produces the components, but I'm not as sure they owns a lot of them, if any (hey, maybe it was originally GEtronics ?

It's General Motors, not Ford.
Concerning GE, I noticed all the major American channels were replaced in SR: instead of NBC, CBS and ABC, there are NBS, CBC and ABS. And Ares owns NBS (the two other being MCT and S-K owned). And you can say a part of GE was sell in 2016 for the NASA Purchase, another in 2029, leaving GE participations to Ares group almost unrecognizable and spread all over the corp (NBS, Ares Industrial, Ares CyberMed, Leviathan Technical...).

From what I understood, "GE Hanford Co." have been replaced by other contractors (including Boeing for the site's computer systems) since the mid-1960ies. GE itself had replaced DuPont de Nemours in Hanford after the end of WW2. GE still manufactures civil nuclear equipment so I guess they could return to nuclear weapon technology at some point in SR timeline, especially as a part of Ares group.
What about Raytheon, the leading developer of nuclear weapons?

I have seen the factory in Arizona where they build cruise missles. That is an inspiration to run sites. One of the most secure places I have ever been to.
I would imagine these guys getting picked up by Ares, same with GE.

Here's an interesting fact for you. A lot of Raytheon's automation, remote control, guidance and ECM/ECCM development facilities lie in Cal Free State, between Saito and the PCC - specifically around Santa Barbara and Lompoc (Vandenburg AFB, where they do the missile testing.)
In fact, Santa Barbara has a WHOLE lot of high-tech military industries hidden in it.

The GE thing was corrected. Ares bought GM.
Ford, however, is still independent. In CD it actually discussed how pissed Ford was because GM and Ford used to compete to sell to Ares, but now that Ares owns GM...

Looking at it from a practical perspective, it's not a stretch to see the Big Three Networks change somehow. In the last twenty years, their ownership has changed pretty frequently.
GE bought NBC from RCA in the early '80s.
ABC was owned by Capital Cities before Disney bought it a few years ago.
CBS was bought by Westinghouse (a competitor to GE) in the '90s and was recently purchased by Viacom. IIRC it was also acquired and sold in the '80s, pre-Westinghouse.
However, I can see a case being made that Ares owns GE since it owns NBS, which is part of Ares Global Entertainment.
BTW, why hasn't anyone mentioned the fact that GE Capital is one of the largest financial institutions in the U.S.?
I also like the new ads where, if you give even the slightest notice, you can see the NBC logo in the rapid montage of images in the little Earth silhouette about halfway through the montage.

Oh yes...from purely financial affairs, they are one of the largest in North America. But also, most of the government subcontractors and large industrial industries use GE Capital Fleet as their sublet system for their vehicle repair options.
Also, many new vehicle sales will offer a GE Cap warranty as well as their own in house brand warranty. (at least most Ford dealerships do this, and GMC as well)
But that rolls right back into Ares prime concerns...wot?

CBC is not a changed American network. CBC is the major one in Canada today. So the real question is, which of the big three American networks got completely lost in the corporate wars? I wonder if there is any mention on what happoned to the BBC world news organisation. BTW: CBC movies kick ass because they are not censored.

I always thought the insurance companies did.
Point 1: The 'largeness' of Insurance Versus Pharmaceutical lobby isn't neccessarily a factor of number of lobbyists. While the insurance companies might have more lobbyists, I don't think they throw as much money at the government as the pharmaceutical companies, simply because they don't *have* to. They're pretty set in their ways, and there's a finite number 'ground breaking innovations' one can have in insurance. Pharmaceuticals, on the other hand, are a growing industry - they need to open up new avenues of research, get new drugs approved by the FDA, tweak strictures on distribution, etc.

1999, I think? It may have been 2000 or so. I recall him doing something hinky and not neccessarily buying a huge block of it (I don't think that's legally allowable anyway), but he got a whole bunch of breaks and his stuff picked up by it.
Not being Canadian, I don't recall all the details, but it was some sort of major coup that involved him being effectively in command of a bunch of their stuff.
Remind me to look it up. An interesting little story, if nothing else.
SR's CBC is probably a substitute for the real life CBS. CBC's headquarters are located in the CAS, IIRC. There is a media group from Québec (QBC or CBQ, can't remember now but it is in Shadowbeat, even has a fake ad... help, please?).

Y'damn right. *G* And the idea to open up the CityTV building to the public during that one week out of the year (I forget what it's called - you know, the Toronto Is Doing Stuff!!! week) is one of the more brilliant publicity moves I've seen.
