Information on this game can be found
here.
Character creation guidelines are boxed inside the spoiler below. At the moment, they are for
reference only.
[ Spoiler ]
- Creation systems available: 115 Build Points. You can use Priority or Sum-to-Ten as long as you subtract 10 BP worth of stuff from your final character. Yes, I'm aware that the Harlequin modules were intended to be high-powered, and the game will eventually become that way, but I don't want you guys to start as hardcore professionals right off the bat. Sweat not, because I'll be modifying the NPCs so that the team doesn't get smeared within the first 5 seconds of combat.
- No deckers. No riggers. I just don't know their rules well enough.
- 4 Edges and 4 Flaws max, with no more than a 6 point difference between them. Aptitude is not an available Edge.
- Gear limits: Standard 8/6 avail/rating. Modified equipment is okay. Custom stuff will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but don't bother sending in something that's just the munched out big brother of an item that already exists, because it will be turned down.
- Your background must be a minimum of a page in length and accompanied by a list of answers to 20-Questions. Extra karma will be awarded for absolutely awesome backstories.
- If you disagree with any of the above, let me know so I can arrange for you to be shot. Just kidding. I'm a pretty flexible GM, so if you want something not covered by the rules, drop me a line and we'll talk.
None of that is important at this point because I'm only looking for character concepts right now. If you're interested in playing, do a write-up with your character's name, specialty, and a paragraph worth of background/description/whateverthehellyouwant and post it here. Be creative and be original, because that one paragraph will be all I have to judge on. Do not send me a character sheet or a full-blown background, because if there are more than 4 people submitting a PC, I can't guarantee that you'll be playing, and I don't want you to waste your time rolling up a character if you aren't going to be selected.
After scanning the two books, there is one restriction that I will place on your character: they must be a good guy. Or at least as good as someone who commits crimes for money can be. It wouldn't make sense for them to be on the team if they're not.
You can submit more than one character if you want, though of course you don't have to. Only people who are team players, know how to have fun, and are dedicated enough to stick with the game through thick and thin need apply. I'm setting a tentative deadline of next Tuesday, but that's subject to change. If you want to contact me privately, you can either shoot me a PM or email me at kacklingkactuar(at)gmail(dot)com. If you have any questions, please ask, and I'll try my best to answer them.

Here's my concept:
[ Spoiler ]
Here's my concept:
Jonathan Hawk was 20 when his life was forever changed.
Hawk was a mage, living in Seattle. He'd had his magical talent for several years, but had never really done anything with it. He was living an unremarkable life as a college student, major undeclared, no direction in life. He'd never even bothered to develop his magical skills; he wasn’t in the Thaumaturgical studies program, and had refused all corp-sponsored scholarships.
This all changed one night, when a car that Hawk was riding in crashed head-on into another car on a busy Seattle street. His friend, who was driving, was drunk, and he was killed instantly when he was thrown through the windshield. Hawk, in the back seat and wearing a seatbelt, survived, but lapsed into a coma.
The events that transpired in that coma would alter Hawk’s personality and life forever.
Hawk found himself in a horrible place. It looked like Seattle, but everything was different. The sky was orange and red, as though it were on fire. The buildings were all blasted, as thought something out of a bad 20th century nuclear Armageddon movie had hit the city. There were no bones, no wrecked cars, nothing to indicate that anything human had ever lived here.
It was then that Hawk first saw them. Strange looking creatures, down the street from where he was. He walked down the street to see what they were, but the closer he got, the more horrific they looked. Horrible, twisted monsters. They looked like they were once men, but had now been twisted by something. Their skin was all sorts of ugly colors, though each one only had one color – gray, oily black, sickly yellow.
The one commonality they all had were blood-red eyes. Eyes that were fixated on Hawk. Eyes that saw a meal.
Hawk couldn’t think of anything to do but run. So he ran. The monsters pursued him. It was as though the street never ended, and there was nowhere to escape to.
Finally, he saw what looked like a…rip. A hole in the middle of this realm. And on the other side, it looked like the Seattle John knew was on the other side. He wasted no time, diving through the hole. The rip closed once he was through.
John could still see into the other side, though. He saw the monsters congregating at the opening. And then, to his horror, he saw them trying to cut through it. Claws ripping, teeth tearing, they were trying to follow him. And even worse, the area around the rip started shaking, like a sheet of Plexiglass being punched. It didn’t give, but it was getting pounded…
That’s when Hawk awoke.
John came out of the coma to discover that two weeks had passed. Miraculously, he hadn’t suffered any brain damage, but he’d had other injuries.
Even worse, John remembered every detail of his dream. It all seemed so real to him. He didn’t dare tell anyone what he saw, but it stayed with him.
From that time on, John gained more interest in developing his magical skills. He practiced molding the mana into spells, and learned to conjure elementals to help him. His magical style involved Latin chants, and a somewhat Christian bent, even though he had never been a particularly religious man before.
Months after the coma, John saw something in the astral of Downtown Seattle, near where he had been hit, that terrified him: a fissure. It was tiny, barely noticeable, but it was there. Taking notes on the fissure over the next few months, he saw that it was growing. Its pace was glacially slow, but it was opening. And on the other side was the same orange-red fiery glow he had seen in the skies of that other realm he’d been to.
John had been convinced that he was in Hell during his coma. And now here it was, coming to Earth.
Since then, Jonathan Hawk has been a force against dark and evil magic-users, helping bring down wizzer gangs and other assorted magical bad news. His ultimate goal, however, is to find some way to halt the invasion from Hell he believes is coming. So far, he doesn’t have nearly the magical skill needed to even play a major part in any opposing action, but he’s constantly improving himself.

HMHVV: Recently saw Constantine, did you?

[ Spoiler ]
Name: Rand
Specialty: Sorcery Adept (Utility-type Spells)/Face (Leadership/Negotiation)
Rand grew up on the easy side of life. Not rich, but well enough to-do that he could survive comfortably with his friends and family. When his parents found out he could cast spells, they nearly handed him over to Humanis straight away. Only after running away into the Barrens and finding shelter under a gang with higher-than-normal magical ability could he escape. After years of training his abilities and coming up with a few others to aid in his survival, he led the gang out of the Barrens into the big time. Two years after that, he left them of his own accord to try to survive life in the shadows.

Neither of those are concepts.

Edit: Here is an example of a concept:
Name: Banana Joe
Occupation: Street samurai
Info: Banana Joe is a banana. He decided one day that the life of a fruit is dull, uneventful, and not fit for a manly banana such as himself. Joe decided to use up all his savings to get wired up with state-of-the-art cyberware and become the meanest banana on the street. Oh yeah, and he runs the shadows because Corp X killed his parents, Apple Bob and Cherry Joan, and he wants to exact revenge on them.

I'm whipping this up on the fly so it's going to be a little rough:
Jonas looks into his campfire, the small blaze not nearly enough to keep off the chill.
Jonas doesn't care. The fire inside him is burning to hot. His anger and his shame.
He nearly killed his sister tonight. It was a joke. His sister filled his bowl with cayanne and he ran mouth burning to the water jug -- filled with vodka. Double fire! He should have laughed it off, but the third burning of everybody laughing at him was too much. He felt Wolf rise within him, a low growl coming out of his throat, and then he was on Jenni, all his gifts being used the wrong way, pounding her faster than thought.
His friends pulled him off. He couldn't face them, or his teacher, or anybody else in the Salish tribe.
When he first met Wolf, he was named Runsfar. Jonas Runsfar. He didn't know then how far he'd be running, or where. But now he had to run away from everybody. Down to the place of steel and concrete and pollution.
Wolf says protect the pack. What happens when that means protect it from you?
==================
Crunchy bits: Wolf Shaman / physad, about 17, running away from home and to Seattle. I'd like the first scene to be hitching into Redmond.
On Edit: Three mages. Is that too many? I can make up a different character if you want. Then again, with the Harelquin stuff it might not be too bad. Jonas is set up to be a magical combat monster, so doesn't actually mess up the other characters.
==================
On edit: the one paragraph:
Jonas Runsfar is a Wolf shaman / physad of the Salish tribe. He recently comleted his initiation. Jonas has substantial anger managment issues that he is aware of and works on. He is running the shadows because he feels he is a danger to his family because of his uncontrolled anger.

Nope. Since you guys have already written a background, you'll have less to do later if you make the team. But for now, I just want a concise, one-paragraph portrayal of your character, done in a manner of your choosing. I did specify this in the first post, for a reason that I've also explained.

Right.
History: Asset DC598 always loved his job. He was cold, calculating, and fast. He was the best assassin Ares had. Then they sent him someplace he wouldn't ever return from.
The job was a simple one. There was some leader down in the Orc Underground, some modern day Martin Luther King Jr., was causing problems. He kept claiming that Ares was a racist company and in return, Ares wanted him eliminated. Being that Asset DC598 was an Orc, he seemed the perfect assassin to go into the Underground. That was their mistake. Asset DC598 tracked the leader's every move for a month. Also during that time, he heard every speech and message the orc leader had to give. It spoke to Asset DC598, the message reached him, down to his soul, and told him that what he was doing was wrong.
Asset DC598 went AWOL. He left his old life of assassination behind him and decided to take the high road. He used his time and skills to help those who couldn't help themselves. He went to O.R.C. demonstrations and stood up for the rights of his people. He was doing what was right and with his old life dead, so was his name. Now he was Paladin.
Concept: Adept specializing in stealth, tracking, and melee combat. He has a custom pole arm (if you ok it) that is a Bo Staff that has a retractable blade at one end making it become a Pole Arm when needed. Since his days as an assassin are over, he tries to avoid killing when nessisary, but will do so if he must (pacifist flaw). Lots of Orc Underground ties.
Need anything else?

[ Spoiler ]
Name: Jonathan Hawk
Occupation: Mage
Info: Jonathan Hawk is a mage, and ever since a car accident years ago, he's dedicated himself to stopping evil and dark magic users. The source of this mission lies in a car accident years ago, in which he was knocked into a coma. During this coma, his astral form was launched into a metaplane that Jonathan is convinced is Hell itself. His ultimate goal is to help stop an impending invasion from Hell that he believes is coming very soon. He would very much like to initiate so he can find that metaplane again and scout around, but the fact that he's neglected his magical skills for so long means that he now has a long way to go before reaching that mark. Even then, he will need much more training to make a difference against Hell's forces.

My character isn't a true team player, but he can work well with a team. I can work well with a team too.
Name: Ghost Dragon
Occupation/Specialty: Shadowrunner and Full Hermetic Mage/Sorcery, Pistols
Also skilled in: Ninjitsu, Stealth (Minor skills - Conjuring, Pistols (B/R))
Description: Ghost Dragon is a former Yakuza assassin. He was taken and trained by the Yakuza at a young age in exchange for his father's life when an angry crime boss came calling. Eventually, Ghost Dragon secretly left Japan, forsaking the Yakuza and the deal that was made to protect his family and erasing all traces of his existence. One day, he plans to return to Japan and kill the crime boss that ended his happy life and started his unhappy one. He runs the shadows to gain money and exerience to that end, knowing he is always hunted by the Yakuza.
Notes: I balance my edges and flaws. Custom pistol if you approve it. Otherwise, Browning UP. The bio is already written, since it's a character I have had for a while. I can take off 10 BP to make 115.

Well, here goes:
Sharp
Five years ago, James Wallis was one the most eligible bachelors in the New York area. The son of a wealthy financer, his only plan in life was to have fun while the family fortune paid for everything. His lifestyle was a study in being a rich, useless bad boy who used his rare magical powers for little more than party tricks. The only exception his career as a professional fencer. But finally even that was corrupted as James was dumped from the circuit with a lifetime ban after being caught using performance drugs.
After a blazing row with his father, James walked out of his playboy life at hit the real world, hard. James was determined to prove he was more than just a pampered show off, but he was shocked to discover that out on the street he was nothing. After working his way around the UCAS scratching out a living from one dead end job to another, James inevitably ended up in Seattle, where it seems all lost souls go.
There he managed to scrape up the cash to settle down and begin earning money at the one skill he did posses from his old life: teaching fencing.
He's been doing pretty well, especially with the little 'extra' jobs some of his students tend to find for a spell slinger who can wield a sword (or better yet, a knife) as well as he can.
Concept: Trickster / manipulation sorcerer and sword fighting expert.

Oh, screw it. This is what I get for trying to restrict creativity. From here on forth, you can write whatever you want, and make it as long as you want. Longer wouldn't necessarily be better, but if you feel that that's what you need to do, go for it.

That still does not mean that I want to see a character sheet.
Slacker
Apr 8 2005, 09:07 PM
Here's my concept:
Name: Slacker
Occupation: Street Sam
Info: As the name implies, he is a slacker. He tries to do as little as possible to survive. He turned to the shadows because he was it just too much effort to try and hold down a regular job. The fact that he could get a fixer to do the work of finding jobs for him was also an incentive. He gravetated to the use of cyberware because it's a way to just buy proficiency and physical ability without having to put in the effort of training and exercise.
There is a lot more to this character under the surface, but you originally said you wanted a breif concept so there you go.

Heya chummer. It's me, Winchy. Now you know how I came to be a shadowrunner. I might look like I'm all muscle and I'm not that smart but you shouldn't let this fool you. Every day of my life I have gotten smarter. Yes, smarter in my speach. Yes, a little bit smarter with the books. Yet, I'm sure there's a lot I could teach you even though you've read 100 times more books than I have. Cause the most important is that I've become much smarter about the streets and the shadows. You might be able to fool me with numbers or words, but never you will fool me in friendship, fighting, or money. And let me tell you this: in the world of shadows we're living in, these are the only things that ever matter.

Name: Caitlin Snow
Occupation: Sorceress, ex-DocWagon
Concept:
Caitlin joined DocWagon in the fervor of youthful idealism. She thought that using her magical gifts to heal people would be the greatest use of her abilities. She found out that being accepted onto a DocWagon HTR team involved danger and volatile situations, but she adapted, becoming tougher and smarter, and learning new skills. Rising to these challenges only reinforced her belief that she had made the right choice in life.
But over time, reality set in. She became worn down by the unrelenting pressure, and her idealism wilted in the face of reality. She watched her team gun down street kids to get to a slimy BTL pusher, who wouldn't get the long overdue street justice that he had coming to him. She watched teammates fall apart under the stress, only to get callously scapegoated and ruthlessly discarded. She watched her team walk past people bleeding in the gutter to get to a whiny Yak suit with a bullet-grazed arm. In the end, she couldn't watch any longer. She left.
It cost her. She had almost nothing left by the time she faded into the shadows, but she is determined to bounce back. She is less naive now, but has not totally succumbed to cynicism, either. She has a harder edge than most magical healers. She is used to paramilitary operations and stressful negotiations, and is a skilled paramedic in addition to her magical skills.

In the name of plain jane mundanes everwhere, I present:
Street Name: Warden (Subject to Change)
Real Name: Gordon Brewer
In a Few Words: Former Firefighter turned Avenger
In a Few More...: Gordon Brewer was leading a storybook life, at least as storybook as it gets in these damned days. He'd moved to Seattle to accept a promotion and appointment as Watch Cheif of the 101st Brigade, and with him had come his wife and two children. What he hadn't been told about life in the 101st was that their turf had other masters than polite society. Their turf was, in part, Haloweener turf. Under his management the 101st took to cleaning up areas the cops wouldn't touch, doing so through community involvement and goodwill. But goodwill's hard to keep going when you fight a daily battle with one of Seattle's toughest gangs, and their premire firebugs.
When the Haloweeners finally grew tired of the new Cheif, they laid a trap for him. They lured him and his squad to a seemingly routine warehouse fire. When they entered the building, however, it was to a hail of bullets, and a subsequent blast behind them which cut Gordon off from the rest of his crew. The Haloweeners hadn't counted on one thing, though. Gordon hadn't been a firefighter his whole life, no he was a Desert Wars hardened ex-Marine. Not only did he escape the trap, he managed to keep his crew safe, and take down a pair of the gangers, hard.
If only Gordon knew...
If only he knew the Haloweeners weren't happy with just trying to take him down. When he returned to the station after seeing his crew to a nearby hospital, it was to find that another two crews had just been dispatched to his own complex. Speeding to the scene, Gordon arrived too late.
He arrived just in time to watch the building collapse.
He dissapeared that night, leaving his old life behind. When he emerged two days later it was with a vengance. Having used the bonds he had forged within the community, he had located several Haloweener haunts. In that one night he struck five times. Five different haunts, five different fires. Anyone wearing Haloweeners colors who tried to escape was shot dead.
He hasn't suceeded in taking down the head of the beast. He knows that he can't do it just yet. But that day gave him reputation enough on the streets that he was approached by a man in the know. And lo came the means through which he could marshall the resources to take out his final revenge.
OOC: Anyone who recognizes the RL name will probably figure out I watched Collateral Damage tonight. Somehow it just seemed right... plus the only other idea I had wasn't mine, but an old players, Metroll, the dim as they come Troll who's afraid of his own reflection because he think it's another Troll stalking him.... then again that campaign ended up just wrong... the Us Trolls band... the WWE Hardcore championship being held by a shadowrunner... maddness...

A blue haired elf packed with cyberware that also has a soft spot for hard-luck cases. He runs the shadows by night and works in a soup kitchen/homeless shelter by day. He a cool pro who knows the stakes and a crack shot with his smartgun, but he's also got the biggest fraggin' heart o' gold in Seattle and has the severe compulsive flaw to prove it.
P.S. GM, I have a three page short-story written that describes the character a little more. Please let me know if you'd like to see it.

Name: Markus Wellington III
Occupation: Shadowrunner
Info: Mark was born into a wealthy family in the UCAS, and lived a normal productive life until the age of 26 when goblinization took him. He sprout into a 2.9 meter Troll with tusks, leathery skin and horns to boot. This simply would not do for his family heritage. His father sent him to the best doctors to see if he could be cured, but to no avail. In the end, he was simply sent away. Forgotten! THis has weighed heavily upon the soul of Markus as his life began a transition from Markus Wellington III, playboy extroidenaire to Draggin, the short tempered Troll who breaks people for money. Draggin has made himself a small niche in Seatlle as a Shadowrunner for hire, originally hired to be the standard meatshield. Draggin has proven himself in the shadows to be a very capable streatSAM with a pretty short fuse. His record also reflects that he likes dangerous runs with plenty of blood to be spilled ... the bloodier the better.

Name: Nack
Specialty: Tracking and surveillance
Brief History:
Nack grew up on the rich side of town, never imagining what life would be like without his parents' money. After a few harsh words were said about his chosen career, he joined the military and went into the Special Ops field for finding people and learning everything about them. It was then that he started recieving his first pieces of cyberware and bioware.
After ten years of military, he went back to "normal" life. He became a bounty hunter with one condition: He doesn't kill his target unless the contract specifically says the target is to be shot on sight.

Alrighty, the deadline has passed. Everyone submitted kickass character ideas, but unfortunately, I'm only one person and can only accommodate so many players. The group for this game, as it stands, is the following:
- Glyph, playing Caitlin Snow
- gobogen, playing Winchy
- tanka, playing Rand
- Slacker, playing...Slacker
- Digital Heroin, playing Warden, but only on the condition that he changes his character's RL name. Sorry man, but I can't help seeing the Governator's face every time I try to envision your guy, and that's not cool.

For those who are on board, you can redirect yourself to the
OOC thread.
