Full Version: Recruiting: The Greatest Addiction
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Welcome to the Shadows
Jeremiah Legacy
First, some apologies. The last campaign I started died off and it's entirely my fault for disappearing without even an explanation. I could offer excuses, but basically, I should have kept my players in the loop. Sorry. It won't happen again.

Now, about this campaign. I read somewhere that food addictions were the most difficult to deal with because food is a necessity. A person could live without alcohol or heroin. Possibly even without sex. But if you stop "using" food, you will die.

The same argument can be made for money and power.

Setting: starting in January 2070 in Hong Kong. This will involve corporate and criminal elements: namely, AA and a couple AAA corps, as well as the Triads and possibly the others as well; depends on where things go.

In addition to Runner Havens, I recommend Shadows of Asia. I also recommend learning about Cafe de Coral, a RL major food corporation; in this game, they are a AA corp, which will be important.

Also, the events of Emergence have not happened ... yet vegm.gif

Rules: Shadowrun 4, Street Magic, and Augmentation. NOT using the Free Contacts rule. You will need to buy your friends.

And a couple more things: I want to avoid the "everybody meets for the first time" deal, so if you're interested, pitch your character basics and how said character fits into the team. Basically, you have all worked together a couple times or so. If you want to know each other longer, fine with me, or maybe a fixer decided to flesh out a group. Either way, it is your responsibility to make a character that will mesh with the others.

Edit: We got a full six people, I think.
Meriss
Hmm I have a bunch of playables, any particular archtypes you are looking for?
Toras
I have a few ideas for a character.

1) Former Assassin, who's life began three years ago. He woke up in an apartment with three dead bodies, remembering nothing of his past. He was holding the Catcher in the Rye, with a fresh SIN book marking a page and two words underlined.

Laughing Man. So that is what he has been calling himself since. I planned for him to be a high edge character, but to have the edge function in a rather unusual manner. It could best be described as having Death from Final Destination as your guardian angel. The side effects can be described as distrubing and occassionally undesirable.

2)Troll Phys Adept. Expert Martial Artist. Goes by the name of One Punch. He spends much of his time, teaching his brand of Kung Fu to the under previlaged in some of Hong Kong's worst slums.

Pays the bills working as a shadowrunner or occassionally as a pit fighter.
Scope_47
Well, since Planitronics penetration seems to be dead, I'd really like to get in on another game. I could either bring 'Scope' from Planitronics and a home f2f game before that (redone according to your chargen rules) since she has a very, very well fleshed out backstory or I could make another character (I have an idea for one that would be pretty neat)

(brief summary) Scope is a former Knight-Errant sharpshooter / covert ops specialist who suffered a mental break, and was 'fixed' by the corp so that they wouldn't lose their investment in her 'ware and training. A few years later an accident led to her breaking the programing while leading a team meant to capture a group of runners in New York - she killed her own team and helped the runners escape. They split up in Seattle where the runners went to Hong Kong and she stayed behind earning a living working as first an assassin for the Gianelli family and later as a freelance shadowrunner. She is constantly struggling with her cyber-psychosis as she attempts to regain her original personality, but in spite of being somewhat sociopathic (academically, she knows that she should feel certain things, but she just can't actually feel them) she is incredibly loyal to her team-members and to her missions - living by a code: Rule 1: A soldier completes the mission. Rule 2: A soldier’s life must be preserved, unless it interferes with Rule 1. Rule 3: A soldier’s comrades’ lives must be preserved, unless it interferes with Rules 1 or 2. Rule 4: A soldier does not kill by action or omission of action civilians or law enforcement, unless it interferes with Rules 1, 2, or 3. While she had made a 'good' living for herself in Seattle as a wet-worker willing to do jobs nobody else would, she is ready to move on for fear that Knight Errant might come after her... a message from one of the team that she escaped New York with would be more than enough for her to pick up and move.

Secondary character concept: Juliana Black is a matchstick woman - born in the CAS, she has been lying, cheating, and stealing her way through life ever since she struck out on her own as a young teen. When something can't be won through words or cunning, usually some explosives will do the trick she's found. Always on the move like any good con-artist, she's managed to stay one step ahead of the men whose lives she's ruined with her scams. Hong Kong seems like a good place to disappear for a while after all.

Meriss: Well, throw some ideas out and we'll see how we can make it work.

Toras: Laughing Man could work - though I am not a fan of the Edge working weird. How vital is that to his life?
I do like the Troll Phys Adept better; there will be plenty of contact with the poorer part of Hong Kong, and the pit fighting is giving my sone "fun" ideas ...
Still, you're the player, not me. If you can live with Laughing Man not having special Edge, use either one.

Scope_47: You can do the sniper, but keep in mind that Knight Errant is the police force in Hong Kong. Moving from Seattle to Hong Kong would be a very poor move for him.
Juliana Black seems more workable, as it ties in with some of Hong Kong's social appearance being vital, but it seems you are more partial to Scope.
Feel free to use either, but I would recommend a different law enforcement group in Scope's past, like Lone Star or Petrovski Security - the company who recently lost the contract.

Keep them coming everyone.
Toras
I could live without the special edge. But One Punch has never seen play time, so I think I will go with him. He's been the sort of character that just kicks around in the back of your head. (Beware the Ninja Troll)...

He will be interesting. Any idea what BP and restrictions you are going with.
Mister Juan
I'd like to submit a "hacker/part time face/ who can do a bit of rigging" I had cooked up for a HK game, a while ago.

Here's a quick glance at who he is, background wise.
[ Spoiler ]

Jeremiah Legacy
Toras: So ninja troll it is. That could definitely sound fun, and let's face it: I'm certainly not going to tell the giant troll that he's not invisible.

Mister Juan: I like Gabe. Well, actually, I hate that little punk, but I like the character. Sounds like he's been in Kowloon for a little while. Could be fun ... especially with his gang work.

So 2 confirmed characters and a third one coming ... I am liking this.

As for BP and restrictions: here's my tentative plan.

400 BPs, no free contacts, and you can use almost anything from SR4, Street Magic, and Augmentation ... provided it makes sense. Also, like I keep saying, all the characters have worked together at some point in the recent past. We'll flesh that part out later.
Mister Juan
I already pretty much have a character sheet done.
Are we emailing, posting them here or pming them?

I'm in the process of modifying blakkie's Chargen spreadsheet to include Augmentation. As soon as that is complete, I'll email it to the players.

What I don't want is the stats being put for public knowledge; everybody has secrets, and your characters are not exceptions - otherwise, why are they running the shadows?
Mister Juan
Alright. I'll wait for you to be done with the char sheet before I send you anything.
Meriss
M'kay here comes trouble

Mandy Pinkerton
Human nutball rigger. She's an overenthusiastic driver and drone jockey, Prolly ended up in Hong Kong on a lark. Adaptable for setting. Actually Mandy as a nut ball Hong Kong schoolgirl might be fun devil.gif

Martin Konohena
Dwarf close combat mystic adept. He's a small loud obnoxiuos guy. Grew up in the Kingdow of Hawai'i. Hong Kong works for him cause it's got lots of fun stuff to investigate. Works as a part time PI. Adaptable for setting.

Adrian Procter
Human spelldefense mage. A quiet intense magician. Awakened at eight. Talks to dead folk alot. Hong Kong works as a research project for him, he also works as a part time forensic mage. Adaptable for setting. Actually Adrian as a Chinese style mage might be fun, but I would need help with tradition.

Robert "Galahad" Jones
Human close combat P-fix addict. Galahad is a utter nutbar. Lives his P-chip all the time. Could have actually grown up in the British section of Hong Kong. (If it's still around) Settin adaptable.
pragma
I've got a few concepts up my sleeves:

John Wrought, tactical communications specialist:
An aging, UCAS born, ex-KE negotiator who left the force after many forgotten sucesses and one very public failure, John is a face who works with intensity of personality and quick, clear, almost gruff communication. His striking dissimilarity from the flowery con-men who usually live in the shadows has gotten him decent business. His tactical training hasn't hurt.

Alistair Caine, ghost hunter:
A British adept who left a promising career in corpsec to try to lift a family curse. His search has led him halfway around the world to Hong Kong and left him entirely out of cash. An able combatant in both planes whose burgeoning knowledge of spirtis and astral space has gotten him a number of odd jobs in the magic heavy Chinese shadows.

I also like combat hackers, but haven't come up with a good backstory to flesh one out.
Scope_47
@Jeremiah Legacy

Here is a (very slightly) tweaked and more complete history of Scope. If this won't work, then I'll switch over to Juliana Black and come up with a more complete backstory for her. Just let me know smile.gif

[ Spoiler ]

EDIT: Almost forgot, one way she could fit into the team (assuming that Pragma is approved and chooses to play John Wrought) would be a previous (during her KE days) working relationship with that character. Otherwise, there is the fixer, and there is also the possibility that she could have worked in the shadows with any of the other runners before.

Mr Juan: I decided to doublecheck this, and I was right; one thing to remember about Hong Kong is that BTL chips are legal. This may or may not make a difference in Gabe's development.

Meriss: Any of them would be good, but it seems that crazy schoolgirl rigger or defense mage would be the most necessary.

Pragma: Love them. Either one would work, and I'm not sure which one would be better; they both fill a niche and have a place.

Scope_47: That's a good background, and a logical reason why Scope would be in Hong Kong w/out having a constant "Gonna die when KE patrols the street." Just an occasional one.

So to review: We have a troll physical adept, a military-trained sniper specialist, a hacker/conman/BTL addict, and a couple possibilities. Head count is 5. If you haven't said anything yet and want in, better get in now. There's room for only one more.

OK, been doing the sheet, and it's becoming a lot of work to add Augmentation stuff to it. I could continue, but I'd rather just get started. Send in your characters by PM and I'll make a simple sheet to keep track of them.

So go ahead and send them in.
Mister Juan
@Meriss
You should SO bring Mandy abord. We didn't get to see a lot of her in Shadow's game, and I'm sure she'd get very well along with my hacker biggrin.gif

@Jeremiah Legacy
BTL was just one thing I had picked amongst many. It wouldn't change much to simply switch BTLs for a simple designer drug.
Meriss
Yah she was fun. Heck I'll do it. Should I convert her to a native or leave her as her cornfed CAS self
Scope_47
@Meriss
I'd say do whichever you feel most comfortable playing... though it would be nice to have a few natives (the Troll not withstanding) since we might look odd as a bunch of Gaijin in Hong Kong.

@Jeremiah
I'll PM you the character sheet after I finish tweaking it tonight smile.gif

- Scope_47
Jeremiah Legacy
OK, with Redjack playing an ork shaman, we got a total headcount of six. Send them my way by PM's. Please do not send them on a character generator/spreadsheet. Now, let's find a way to make them mesh. Feel free to collaborate.

And Pragma: I need a definite "This is what I'm playing" soon.
Redjack
Ti Yung Chow aka An Shui
[ Spoiler ]
pragma
I spec them out over dinner and get back to you with my decision before the night's out.
Redjack
Being half-Caucasian, speaking English natively and being an ork, An Shui is probably easier accepted by westerners (in most cases) than locals. To that end the new arrivals in town, Scope, Gabe and Mandy would provide him a link to his past and accepting people. One Punch sounds like he would be a figure whom An Shui might know, especially if he teaches in Kowloon City.

As the team begins to work together, Mandy's chaotic nature will not mesh well with An Shui's reserved, strategic nature. Scope's sense of duty and loyalty however would be a complementing set of values. One Punch's sense of connection to underprivileged will also appeal to An Shui and generate a strong sense of respect. Not quite sure about how he and Gabe would get along.
pragma
@Jeremiah
Alright, jury's in. Going with John Wrought, whose street name has yet to be determined. Are you looking for charsheets or back stories now?

@Scope
We might want to work out a joint backstory, your call.
Scope_47
Okies, so we're all supposed to know each other before this thing begins... we could always do the 'we've done a few runs in Hong Kong together before' bit and leave it at that, but I'd think it would be more fun if we fleshed it out a bit smile.gif I tried to put together (without dropping unnecessary spoilers) some ways people might know Scope as well as generic info anyone who ran with her before would know. PM me if one of the 'if you were blah blah blah's applies to you and you want to have history prior to Hong Kong with Scope smile.gif

@Pragma
[ Spoiler ]

Here is what anyone who has worked with Scope before would know:
She is about 5'9" with a gymnast's build, raven black hair, and no scars that you have seen. At meets she wears a neo-Italian business suit, but otherwise wears a black spaghetti tank, black combat fatigue pants, a black beret, and a black combat jacket. Her eyes are cybernetic, but most of the time appear a natural color (usually blue). While openly in her runner persona, they have images uploaded that make them appear to be red sniper's crosshairs for pupils over black corneas. She is generally no-nonsense when it comes to the run, and she is active in the planning stages - seeming to be well acquainted with tactics, physical security systems, and security procedures. Her voice is unemotive for the most part, and she has a militarized nature - often slipping into military lingo and only translating to 'plain english/mandarin' if asked. She doesn't trust wireless computers at all - the only thing wireless you've seen her use willingly is a micro-transceiver, and even that she uses sparingly. On runs, you've seen that she depends on stealth for the most part, but is an incredible shot with her sniper rifle - an aging CAS MA-2100 that appears to have been through a lot of combat and has both square and round pip marks representing kills. If you call her a sniper, she usually corrects you by saying "A sniper is a random slot with a hunting rifle who tries to pick people off from a distance. I am a sharpshooter, not a sniper."
While she is generally unemotive, it is obvious through her actions that she cares about the people she runs with. She doesn't believe in leaving anyone behind and goes out of her way to cover her teams' hoops even when it isn't in her own best interest. Before every run, she hands out a cigar to each runner - meant to be a victory dance once everyone is back safely.
When not working, she often is want to discuss philosophy - seemingly at least rudimentarily versed in both western and eastern philosophy - and obsessed with the concept of the soul. She also quotes (sometimes taking liberties or simply misquoting) Shakespeare and Arthurian legend during verbal sparring. She doesn't seem to be 'all quite there' though... always a half a second behind everyone else when laughing at a joke or not seeming to understand why people get upset over some things (especially 'enemy casualties' as she puts it). However, while her sense of humor is underdeveloped at worst and macabre at best, she always keeps her word and always does right by her team-members. Oh, and there are two types of angry that she gets... the first is a kind of 'fake angry' she does sometimes (especially when yelled at, something goes awry, or someone else is angry about something and she tries to be supportive). That sort of angry doesn't seem to mess with her judgment or do anything at all other than make her cuss in rapid fire Italian. The other sort of angry is the one to watch for... its when she gets quiet and this look comes on her face... that's when you know drek is about to happen.

Those who only ran with her in Hong Kong would know:
She showed up not too long ago and hasn't set up a network yet. Judging by her gear, you'd guess that she wasn't unsuccessful wherever she came from, so she must have a reason to be in Hong Kong. Definitely a Westerner, but she seems to have a lot of respect for local beliefs. She knew some Mandarin when she got here too.

Those who were in Seattle between 2066 and 2069 might know:

So far, soo good. Three down, three to go.

Couple rules notes: one, I like Redjack's format in his signature, so we will be using that for color coding.

Two: I trust you to make your rolls, except for perception, assensing, and similiar roles. I will make those and tell you what you see as a result. (Glitches ... not just bad, bad for you.)

On one more note: is anyone here familiar with Higglytown Heroes?

I just wikied it... I'll bite, what does a children's show have to do with anything?

Not much at this point. I had an idea, and was curious about whether or not to use it later.

@Meriss
We might want to work some "link" between our PCs
Gremish
If you need another player let me know i will be down for a game.
Meriss
Okay Mr. Juan What did you have in mind. The BF spot is taken thou. Reggie is becoming Rian Dharmasta A hindu magical exchange student.

Jerimiah: I am still around It's just I've got a job upcoming and I might be a little sporadic. Mandy's background is being tweaked for Hong Kong. The whole thing is she has a very specific set of Knowledge Skills that are useless outside Seattle. SO working and Trying to play with BP a bit.
Toras
For some reason, I can't view profiles. What email should I send onepunch to.
Mister Juan
QUOTE (Meriss)

I didn't really have anything in mind in particular. Gabe has been in HK for more or less 2 years, and mostly hanging out with the Go-Gang and raver crowds. The reason why I pointed out that our character might already "know" each other is from the fact they have a lot of personality traits in common, are about the same age, and probably run the same circles.
Redjack
Toras and I have worked out connected histories for One Punch and An Shui, respectively. Both are in Kowloon City area and involved a little with 9x9. One Punch also teaches Martial Arts to down & out metas. An Shui does shadow work using his magic skills. Both are somewhat picky on what jobs they accept. Any body else mesh up with that since arriving in Hong Kong?
Meriss
Mandy is becoming a native cause her driving skills don't work if she ain't. She's been running freelance jobs and one time jobs. She also runs a car/motorcycle, repair/customization shop. Still hashing background out but getting there. Slowly biggrin.gif
Scope_47
QUOTE (Redjack)

Yes and no.

Since arriving in HK, Scope will take any job that has a worthwhile payment - wetwork, espionage, B&E, whatever (in seattle she had a rep for taking the jobs nobody else could stomach). However, there are certain jobs she takes regardless of payment - hooding and anything that helps those who've been chewed up by the system/corps, especially kids, furthers social or idealistic justice, or that a friend simply asks her to help with (within reason). It seems like a contradiction in character, but she always has a philosophical explanation if you comment on how she'll remorselessly take the darkest wetwork job there is one week for a high price and the next week will help an orphanage pro bono.
Jeremiah Legacy
It looks like we're about ready to begin. Let me check everything; you all do the same. And we'll see if we missed anything obvious. Then we should begin.

PM of stats is preferred.

Edit: Something I thought I'd say about rolls. For the most part, we will use the honor system; after all, if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. However, I make the Perception, Assensing, and rolls like that. This is mostly so that seeing the dice will not give up too much information.

Because there are a billion pieces of gear that modify perception (which are invariably tough to keep track of), Is there any way we can gently remind you of the various modifiers our characters get for perception tests?

Sorry. All filled up. But if any openings should arise (people sometimes quit or I antagonize them too much), I'll be in touch.

And to our six players, we should be starting possibly as early as tomorrow, so watch for the IC and OOC topics. We will be using Redjack's format for coding what is said when to whom because it is eaier than everyone doing their own.
Jeremiah Legacy
Within 24 hours, it will begin.

If you have any changes you wish to make, but were waiting for the last minute ... this is the last minute!
