It's a FF-style RPG in which...well:
QUOTE
The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041, a day so painful to some that it is referred to only as the "B-Ballnacht". Thousands upon thousands of the world's greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. The reason: the Chaos Dunk, a jam so powerful its mere existence threatens the balance of chaos and order. Among the few ballers and fans that survived the basketball genocide was Charles Barkley, the man capable of performing the "Verboten Jam"...

Flash forward 12 years to the post-cyberpocalyptic ruins of Neo New York, 2053. A Chaos Dunk rocks the island of Manhattan, killing 15 million. When the finger is put on the aging Charles Barkley, he must evade the capture of the B-Ball Removal Department, led by former friend and baller Michael Jordan, and disappear into the dangerous underground of the post-cyberpocalypse to clear his name and find out the mysterious truth behind the Chaos Dunk. Joined by allies along the way, including his son Hoopz, Barkley must face the dangers of a life he thought he gave up a long time ago and discover the secrets behind the terrorist organization B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S.

Even if you don't intend to play it, the trailer (in the above link) is worth checking out.

Aha, but you forget that RPG geeks burst into flames when you talk about sports.

Apparently, the same group that is making this has also make a platformer based loosely on The Diary of Anne Frank.

If I were going to treat Anne Frank I'd do some kind of Wolfenstein mod. It'd be like Anne Frank meets Tarantino.

Nah, it'd be better as a stealth game. Missions would be things like "get food", "go about your daily routine", "avoid making noise", and "brutally execute the family next door who is considering tipping off the authorities for a reward".

Nah. I'd have her rise from her grave after dying of typhus in the concentration camp with orders from YHWH to wreck Biblical vengeance upon the nazis and their collaborators along with the ability to transform into any number of powerful werecreatures.

Better yet—an investigation game. You play a member of an Einsatzgruppen or of the Sicherheitsdienst in general, traveling to different cities and tasked with identifying and capturing Jews, Poles, Roma, Slavs, Soviets in a few levels set in recently-captured areas of the Eastern front, Communists, Anarchists, homosexuals, Freemasons, and occasionally other people in as efficient a manner as possible. You're given a small team and you have to use a combination of sharp observational abilities, careful attention to detail with deductive and inductive reasoning, bribes, threats, and other means to find as many individuals matching at least one of the aforementioned criteria in as little time for as low a cost as possible. One of the levels could then be set in Amsterdam, allowing you to track down Anne Frank et al.

It'd take a lot of work to get the NPC AI working right and give proper balance to all of the options, though.

I can now confirm this. I'm on my second play-through and still finding it hilarious.

Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden is about five hours long and full to the brim with awesome. There is actually a character whose name is "Cyberdwarf". The currency is the "neo-sheckle". What makes the game great though is the dialog. See the block of silly looking text I quoted in my first post? Every word of dialog in the game treats that ridiculous premise with the utmost gravity and sincerity. It's brilliant and this is coming from someone with no interest in basketball or CRPGs (let alone JRPGs).

Beyond just being hilarious, Barkley is actually a lot of fun to play. If you are unconvinced, there are a couple of good reviews on Destructoid and Eurogamer.
