Full Version: Server Issues?

...I've been noticing (with increased frequency) that DS page loads have been taking an inordinate amount of time. On several occasions I have waited upwards of four minutes for a page to load or refresh. I checked, other websites, including those heavy with graphics (such as DeviantArt and ESPN) and they load/refresh just fine so the issue doesn't appear to be on my end.

Are there possibly server issues that might be causing this?

Could there be some kind of conflict with Firefox?

Have others experienced the same slowness?
DocTaotsu
Just today actually... Otherwise DS has been pretty good to me.
Fortune
Same here!

Yes, those who have access to the server have taken note of this, and are working on some things that should hopefully speed things up. Also, you might try waxing your modem up (or moving to broadband grinbig.gif )

I am on broadband and it was unusually slow lately.

Hope what ever tweaks they're making help. It's been getting progressively worse, even on a 270Mbps connection. Seems to be worst between about 2p-6p CST. At least that's when I've noticed it the most over the past couple of days.

It seems to be back up to speed for me. Keep this posted however if anyone is still having issues.
DocTaotsu
i waxed my modem but now i can't konn3ct at all!!!!!!!!!!! pLease Halp!

hehe.

The last three days, including this morning, has still be slow on the initial load. Once I get into the forum, everything runs fast.
adamu
Glad this is not just me. Last three or four days - home (broadband), Internet cafe, and the supposedly rock-the-world system at the office (major Japanese financial institution) - all painfully slow.

Not trying to complain - just confirming the issue.
Redjack
I see a lot of opportunity for optimizing the database since the upgrade...
DocTaotsu
Seems to be back to normal for me.
Redjack
Dropped in one database tweak and we are back in the fast lane for me. biggrin.gif

I still have a few other areas I don't like the stats on, but I'll take it slow to gauge each change.
deek
I didn't notice any slowness in the initial load just now...maybe that did the trick...

I'm working from home today, so I'll see how it goes when I am back in the office tomorrow.
Naysayer
Well, I still experienced the occasional hiccup today (about an hour ago, now it's better, meaning gone from "expect to see the page when your grandchildren finish university" to "this shouldn't take so long on broadband").
And it's not my connection, I've been surfing porn-sites like lightning doing academic research with no significant delay.
Fortune
Not just you. It's slow, but better than the other day.
Redjack
I have not noticed anywhere near the issues I was experiencing earlier in the week. I still believe the database could use a bit more tuning. I will be taking those changes slowly. I will be turning up the logging a bit soon too. I think the site delays are all linked to the database tuning. The processor is 93-98% idle, memory is 75% free... Apache is all but sleeping. The database worked fine with the older version of the board, but the new version uses significantly more tables and equally larger number of joins and the like.
Kyoto Kid
...seems to be working fine again.
Abbandon
Its been good for me for the last couple of days. When it does bog down I notice that all the little graphics for buttons and those envelopes next to every thread load very slowly and individually. Those might be a cause...
Dashifen
That's an interesting point. The server isn't marking images and CSS and the as expired is it? It'd be a shame if it overrides the browser's cache settings for commonly used files like that.

I've noticed that at 1400 MST (1900 GMT/Zulu) each day for about 30 minutes, dumpshock becomes completely unaccessible. After about 1430 (1930) everything's hunky dory again. Not sure why it is. I'm usually at work during this timeframe, but if possible I'll test this during my weekend this week (Thurs/Fri) and see if it happens on my home connection as well. It *might* just be my work's firewall. Stranger things have happened.
Redjack
I've been noticing that as well. I think there are daily jobs within the IP Board that kick off during that time and lock the database. I will be taking a deeper dive over the next week.
Fortune
I was just contemplating whether to mention that exact same thing.

It barfs for me around that time, too, and I work from home.
adamu
If my time-difference calculations are correct, then I have been having the exact same problem here in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Redjack
I found a non-critical job scheduled to run in that time frame. I have disabled that job. We'll see how today goes...
Jhaiisiin
Awesome. I'm glad to see you're on top of this Redjack. Too many other boards I read will just let problems go because the admin isn't bored enough to fix them. smile.gif I won't be able to check it out today during that timeframe, but hopefully others will and we'll see what's what. It's great to have an admin who actually *works.* *cheer!*
adamu
Everything smooth as silk for last two nights at that time. Thanks so much.

Or mornings in my case.

Ditto, haven't noticed any slowdowns recently. Very awesome work Redjack.
