That news is actually pretty old. The technology is already in human trials (for implants), and I've heard rumor of development of non-invasive commercial products.

Links?

From 2005: http://www.livescience.com/technology/050218_monkey_arm.html

From 2003: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn4262...-third-arm.html

These were the first two links from a Google search for "monkey robot arm brain," if you were wondering.

There is something new on this one, though. The monkey seems cool with the robot arm, which isn't usually the case. Also, it's the first video I've seen of the phenomenon.

Ah! that's good of you thanks.

This fascinates me. The human brain is sooooo complex so even if the monkey's were fully integrated and able to use the limbs as good as their real ones, it would still take years for the humans to manage the same. Especially as we take at least 5-8 years for a child to learn decent hand eye co-ordination.

Anyhow, thanks for the info!

That's not entirely true, either. Let me see if I can find it ... here it is.

http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/7800.html ... and a bunch more if you Google "video game brain control tongue"

From the article:
"He cleared out the whole level one basically on brain control," said Leuthardt. "He learned almost instantaneously. We then gave him a more challenging version in two-dimensions and he mastered two levels there playing only with his imagination."

Again, I stand corrected!

I've been living under a rock for the last few years!

Ok so things have moved on more than I thought!

I bet this is old news too.

It's less old, although the technology they're improving upon has been around for a couple of years.

From a geek perspective, I don't really like the technique they're using, shifting around nerves and things. I mean, yes, it's less invasive than electrodes in the skull, but I don't think it will offer as much freedom of movement.
