The brainchild of a young Russian magical researcher who was frustrated by the need to take time away from his work to complete dangerous and life-threatening adventures, the first branch of the Metaphysical Bonds, Stocks, Commodities, and Property Exchange (MBSCPE), then known as the Karma Exchange opened in 2056 in Vladivostok, providing a convenient way for magicians and Free Spirits to purchase karma from the destitute and the desperate. Since then, The Exchange has expanded in size and scope. Today, it has branches in most major cities and lists every exchangeable metaphysical energy, stocks and bonds in purely metaphysical enterprises, and property that only exists on the metaplanes including metaplanar real estate.

The settling of commodities accounts is usually accomplished with the assistance of spirits who possess one of the the various Energy Drain Powers and Endowment and the Exchange keeps such spirits on-hand at each branch for just that purpose and most brokerage firms have some in their employ. One can trade Karma, Essence, Force, and Magic this way.

Metaplanar stocks and bonds are more ephemeral. While the concept works similarly to the stocks and bonds traded on every other stock exchange in the world, the business entities that issue these instruments exist primarily or entirely on the metaplanes, some not even having so much as an office on Earth. As such, the solvency of these enterprises, or if they actually exist, is open for debate and interpretation. Metaplanar properties, likewise, are an investment of questionable worth to the average human being, but of interest to many spirits and some initiates.

Usually found in dark basements and abandoned warehouses, the branches of The Exchange find steady streams of desperate people and dubious spirits. They are one of the few places, perhaps the places, where you can find Blood Spirits, Mantis Females, and Succubuses working side-by-side on friendly terms along with 20-something MBA holders, magicians of every tradition, professional criminals, homeless persons, and various sapient critters.

This reads like a Reductio ad Absurdum argument against the Karma system and the abilities that make the Exchange possible. It is still rather interesting and appeals to me on certain levels.

Should it be a criticism, it is one of the better kinds of criticism for its product.
