Taking care to make sure everything is safely stowed in the water-proof pockets of his jumpsuit, Gecko slips quietly into the water some distance back up the shore. He picks his way cautiously along the bottom avoiding the rubbish often found on the bottom of harbours and keeping a low profile on the off-chance that there are more sensors below the waterline.

[ Spoiler ]

In the lee of one of the two smaller piers that ran east/west he pushed a Fiber-optic waveguide above the surface and plugged the end of a reel of Fiber into it. After a few moments his comm-link was able to align with the laser link on the Sat-comm.

<<sat-channel-1-encrypted>>

Nearly in position. I think this facility may be built over the water to some extent, I'm going to examine the structure when I get closer, see if I can't get in underneath. If not I'll try the optical tap.

Reeling the fiber-optic line out behind him he glided across the bottom to the south-east corner of the facility. When he got there he pressed his RADAR sensor up against the Plascrete wall. RADAR was useless underwater but it would be able to tell him how thick the wall was and what might lie behind it...

The interior of the compound is bathed in yellow, blue, and purple AR objects, labeled as fence mounted sensor ranges for ultrasound, wideband radar, and motion detectors. The digital rainbow extends to just outside the fence.

<<Good news, everybody. I was looking at the atmospheric signal decay from their wideband RADAR sensors and the patterns didn’t make sense, so I looked at the signal strengths and phases from the ultrasound emitters. Those were screwed up, too. Then it hit me. Their coverage outside the fence is almost non-existent and most of what I was getting was the signal coming through the building from the directional sensors on the far side. The whole detection network is set up to find people who are either in contact with the fence to tamper with the sensors, or have already breeched it and are headed for the building. Makes sense really. With all the deer on the island and all the boats in the harbor, anything reading more than a few meters from the fence would be going off constantly.>>

The entire site is suddenly bathed in a pale pink surrounding the facility that extends well over a hundred meters past the boat’s position, and almost all the way across the bay.

<<But don’t get sloppy just yet. The pink is their theoretical detection range. Everything I’m reading shows that these things are turned way, way, way down to reduce the number of false alarms, and attract less attention. Oh, and they’re all hardwired. But I think we all knew that already.>>

Relax guy's, there's no need to interfere with the guards if we don't have to.

Nice work Truth. Things are looking up here.

The south side of the facility is actually built on piles over the water. They've walled them in with Plascrete but it only follows the line of the fencing. There is a huge sensor blind-spot under the platform at the end of the two north-south piers. Even if they were to jack the sensors all the way up they would still be blind under there.

I'm going to head across there and put a probe through the wall, there is a good chance that the wiring for the fancy sensors runs through that dead space. If not it might well make a good route in or out.

Stealthily he glided back across the bottom of the bay to the waveguide he had placed earlier and used it to re-direct the LASER beam from the Sat-comm on the shore below the waterline to a second waveguide. Running the beam underwater would greatly reduce the range of the beam. He would probably have to put in a repeater after only 4 klicks instead of 10. He places another three of the little waveguides, just little lengths of fiber-optic wire mounted on a rotating track and concealed to look like something innocuous, mostly security sensors in this case, as he made his way along the sea floor to the shadow of the platform and then the hastily erected Plascrete wall designed to keep the likes of him out of this facility.

Carefully and quietly he crawled up out of the water until he was tucked into the corner formed by the wall and the platform above.

[ Spoiler ]

Now he drew a number of small bits and pieces from various pockets and started to assemble the drill.

He knew a Traceur who used his skills to access odd places to run fibre, power cables and the like into old buildings and he'd been amazed when he'd first seen him use his mono-filament drill to run an endoscope into a derelict building they had wanted to explore. A low powered electric motor or hand crank, a screw rod and a loop of mono-filament could do in seconds what old fashioned Tungsten-Carbide drill bits struggled to do at all.

Pierre always said that the Mono-filament chainsaw was an abomination and the last refuge of lunatics and poseurs.

It was the work of a few moments to drive a 3mm bore right through the Plascrete barrier. Tiny shavings of the material drifted silently down onto water like mad industrial pencil sharpenings.

Gecko slipped the signal probe through the hole and tasked one of his new IC constructs to examine the data feed.

DD's busy and I need to know if this software is up to the job anyway.

Ralph, did you notice anything unusual? I'm going to send a drone in to check it out.

Slowly he drills another five parallel holes in the wall to form the apexes of a hexagonal column about 3 inches across. Threading a short length of rappelling line through this last hole he forms a lanyard and ties it off at his waist.

OK, this might make a little noise but I'll try to keep it to a minimum. Keep your eyes peeled.

He focussed his Mana and wreathed his hand in a compressed shock-wave of high pressure plasma and wrapped the other end of his climbing line into a thick ball around his wrist hoping it would muffle the noise of the impact.

Team Chat Channel:
<<Ok, you might not like this, but we need a bit more time to infiltrate the facility node. Hacking on the fly is too risky - too easy to get detected. So, get comfortable, and be a bit patient, and thank you for using our data services.>>

Firing up her stealth and exploit programs, DD starts probing the node with Jake at her back. Her neon green icon darkens, her curvy form getting rougher, and less distinct, until it ressembles a ghillie suit as she is trying to worm her way into the facility node.

Team Chat Channel:
<<If anyone wants to analyze the traffic pattern we're sniffing, do so, so we have got a leg up if we need to insert fake alerts as a distraction... >>>

Suddenly, DD, already probing the node for exploits, has an idea.

It's crazy but it might work.

Team Chat Channel:
<<Oh, if they use this line to move the data in an emergency then even if we trigger an alert we might get the files we're after, so keep copying and sifting the data we sniff. It's a slim chance, but better than none.>>

[ Spoiler ]

After an hour of digital hide and seek, DD finally finds a small bug, a weak spot in the sculpted mech's armor. Grinning, she "goes for the eyes and groin".

Showtime!

He listened in to the guards radio chatter, munched his way through an MRE and rehearsed his exfil mentally.

And waited.
