Lifestyle: Middle Security, Low others, Trigger-Happy Landlord, Worse Neighbors, Free Access
Triads use half the building for prostitution, so they're always looking for an excuse to take over more rooms, but they keep the place safe to live in. Plus, there's a matrix backbone node across the street that Robbie's discovered more cracks in than a Redmond street.
Having recently (read: this very afternoon) picked up Runner's Companion, I'm going to use the character quiz to fill in more details as I come up with them. For now, stealing Mickle's 20 questions sheet makes a good enough start.
Where did your character learn his/her skills?
In the Ork Underground, from a friend of the family.
What did your character do before choosing a running the shadows?
He relied heavily upon his parents and mentor before grabbing the commlink off a dead body in a gang fight. The link had a Spoof program on it, and he figured out how to turn on utilities for his neighbors, who proved equally as hospitable.
Where was your character born? Feel free to include any other places he/she may have lived.
Born and raised in the Ork Underground around Downtown and Snohomish. He recently spoofed his way into a little dive in Everett.
Does your character have any family? If not, why. (Do they know where you are? Do they care? Etc.)
Yes, both parents and eleven siblings (five brothers, six sisters, spread unevenly across two litters).
While they're all aware of where I am and how to get in touch with me, there are simply too many of us for anyone to get much attention from anyone else. Robbie is close to the runt of his (the second) litter, Jake.
What are your characters dreams/goals/aspirations?
He wants to be Fastjack, plain and simple, and he's willing to do anything to do so. He's also sharply aware of the short life expectancy of orks, and hopes to come across some means of cheating death.
What is the characters general appearance? (How do they stand? How do they dress? Are they attractive? Do they try to look intimidating or casual?)
Robbie stands 1.7m, sleight of build (by ork standards) at 85kg. His brown hair is short and unkempt, held out of his light brown eyes by a cobalt blue bandanna wrapped around his forehead and ears. He's usually wearing a blue-and-grey urban camo jacket with matching pants and slate-colored boots, all of which match the paint job on his bike. He stands at attention whenever he has to, but prefers to sit on any available surface, even desks and countertops. He keeps a mild, neutral expression unless something particularly upsets him, at which point his nostrils flare and his smallish tusks become impossible to fail to notice.
Why did they choose to be a runner?
As rewarding as spoofing utilities for the community can be, it just wasn't getting him anywhere. He'd never learn the ins and outs of the matrix in any sort of routine. Only by laying his neck on the line for the big nuyen could he hope to make a name for himself.
What is the characters personality? (This is apart from just basic psyche. Are you an idealist, radical, pessimist, militant, aloof etc?)
Robbie is fairly easygoing until it comes to matters of matrix work. Anything from homegrown hardware designs to the latest script kiddie's garbage gets treated with the utmost reverence. He's willing to listen to anyone's point of view, but rarely accepts anyone else's ideas if they differ from his own.
What are some things your character cannot do? (Get close to people, work well with others, handle money, think clearly under stress etc.)
Robbie can't turn down a challenge. He's narrowminded and rather easy to manipulate, and on top of it all, he sees everything as an opportunity to make himself more famous.
What does your character hate and why? (Corps? Trolls? Certain people?)
Elves. Robbie's had some bad run-ins with local elf go-gangs, and his parents' elven landlord was always banging on their door the day before rent was due. He's sensible enough to tolerate individual fairy-folk, but any initial encounter starts with some tooth-grinding.
What does your character respect?
Ability. Robbie respects anyone who is good at what they do, regardless of what it is or why they do it. You're the best kazoo player on earth? Far out, man.
How was your character educated?
His parents did what they could, and he learned a lot from his older brothers and sisters. His mentor tried to explain magic to him, but he just didn't grasp the idea that he was Awakened himself.
What is your characters moral code?
Look out for number one, because everyone else certainly is. While some things should be held back for when there's no alternative (murder, theft), and others are simply unconscionable (physical or psychological abuse of someone who's dependent upon you), most common "wrongs" are merely tools in a world that no intention of waiting for you.
Does your character have any political beliefs? Religious?
Robbie doesn't care who's stuffing ballot boxes this year, only whether they've outlawed being an ork yet. He feels most religions are a bunch of hokey rituals people use as security blankets, and the smart people are the ones who've figured out that the only real things are cold steel and warm bodies.
What item(s) does your character treasure? (This is beyond monetary value. It could be a lucky coin, photograph, sock etc.)
His link and bike are his life, and the amount of trouble he's gone to for them is worth far more than their mere pricetag, but his one treasure is a good luck charm his late older brother gave him for his tenth birthday.
Robbie is a nobody outside of the community he grew up in. Aside from his contacts and the Triad who picks up his protection money every month, he's just another ork with a bike.
If it'll fly on Dumpshock, I'm cool.
