Currently I've been using the Oni soundtrack (weird techno music from Bungie's Oni game), some weird throat music by David Stutz that came with one of Neal Stephenson's cyber/ribo-punk books and the soundtrack to Read Or Dream the TV series. What do you use?

It really depends on the group and the setting. I personally enjoy Cowboy Beebop music, but it may have a few too many trumpets for your taste. Definitely look into it if your game has a more western or jazz feel to it.

Other than that, I highly encourage you to look up anime soundtracks. They're easy to locate, download for free, and already tailor made for background music.

I think that Scandinavian Folk Metal like Finntroll or Trollfest are perfect examples of Troll Thrash Metal

Heck some of stuff from Finntroll's acoustic album is actually a pretty good stand in for 'traditional' Orzet folk music.

Eluveitie or Waylander are a perfect pair of Elf Metal bands to have wandered out of one of the Tir's. If you're less into the screaming then Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphies works too.

The Yoshida Brothers are the latest hit group to come out of Japan.

For more generic club music I usually rely on stuff like VNV Nation or another more traditional Industrial group like NIN. If I'm playing up the weird 80's style over substance vibe then I'll bite the bullet and track down some raver crap and make my players suffer through that.

And yes... I have very strange taste in music at the best of times...

Armitage Polymatrix Soundtrack for example is very fitting most of the time.

Just play the Louis Armstrong version of Mack the Knife on constant loop. If the players ask when they're going to fight Mack, calmly inform them that their characters are Mack.

Nothing but snippets that I pull from YouTube. Girl From Ipanema for elevator rides, a few seconds of R&B/Hip Hop to introduce a club scene, etc. I don't hover around anything in particular though I like to listen to Steely Dan when I write adventures.

I don't like extended background music when I play though I am cool with subtle sound effects (rain falling, traffic noise, etc).

My GM had a huge library of lots of genres and he pretty much dug something out whenever it was appropriate. Man had a memory and a damn half. I'd suggest some of Frank Klepacki's work for Westwood, it's all pretty damn sweet. In fact, Unreal Tournament 2004 also has a pretty decent selection so long as you're looking for action music, you can fit a lot of variation in there.

For Anime OSTs: Paranoia Agent, Lain, Ergo Proxy, Baccano, Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners) might all contain stuff of use for Shadowrun. Depends on your campaign and the tastes of your players. Given that you use the Read or Dream OST I'd suggest looking at Baccano if you're slightly more Pink Mohawk than ROD, or Ergo Proxy if you're more Black.

Last night I was watching the Stand Alone Complex movie Solid State Society and was rather impressed by the quick-tempoed jazz score that was used during the sniper hunt scene. I need to find that soundtrack.

I would recommend MUSE... Songs like Acocolypse Please... Fit SR so great. Anyway a band that is truly ahead of the curve... MUSE would have to do best for me... When I am thinking of shadowrun story lines for my group I am usually listening to one of their albums. From the music to the lyrics.

Of course "Oh, No You Didn't" is a pretty appropriate song for most games...
