In the last centuries humans have seen manythings, but of all of the events that our race has endured, the worst is developing right beneath our noses.

The rise of the age of technology.
everyday we awake only to find our selfs surrounded by countless technological advancements, many of which seem to be great and helpfull. Everything is changing right before our eyes and we refuse to see it. We refuse to see that the day of the people is gone and that the day of the corporations has come, Corporate competitiveness has not stopped at advertising, it has become worse, each corporation treating the human race as cattle, vegetables, fruits, only to be harvested for everything they humanly have, money, time, privacy. For years corporations have been spreading their roots right beneath us, and they have been waiting for the time to strike, the time to take over and begin a new age. That time has come, The age of the MegaCorporation has come, The age of the doomed...

Was there supposed to be some substance to go along with the vague conglomeration of techno-dystopian themes?

Corporations have been evolved and advanced to achieve stunning levels of incompetence that William Gibson could hardly have imagined. I know it's easy to say that it's not the government, it's the corporations who are really in charge (and to a degree that's true) but everyone answers to someone else, be they voters or stockholders. A vast conspiracy of corporations taking over and creating an Orwellian state is a rather laughable idea to me, especially now. Corporations want to make as much money as possible, not rule the world. Ruling the world is a real headache.

I dunno. I guess there's no concept as "over" for me as cyberpunk. I think its time to find a new faceless bad guy other than governments and money-making institutions. Religion? Fascist lizard aliens disguised as humans who claim to be our friends but rather want to eat us?

I would assert the possibility that the only reason corporations do not, in fact, pursue "ruling the world" (state-like authority over their surroundings) is the direct result of opposition by strong nations. John Company stopped owning India when the British government took it away, not when they decided it was too much trouble to rule it.

In a setting that assumes the crumbling of state power, like a typical cyberpunk setting (and Shadowrun in particular), that opposition is no longer strong, and it seems far from obvious to me that corporations would still not pursue state-like authority.
