What is ogl steampunk ??

I play steampunk games, if that's what you're asking.
And am putting together a steampunk-esqe rpg to capture the essense i want.
Maelstrome
ogl steampunk captures the essence of steampunk genre in my opinion. its a d20 game by mongoose publishing.

http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info...d=2177&it=1

i have a hardcopy of it.

its classic steampunk mixed with fantasy. you have elves, dwarves, and other fantasy races, magic, and of course clockwork and steam tech. there are rules for all kinds of machines. there is the standard fair of weapons. pretty much dnd with flintlocks and percusion cap weapons. also the "new" races in it are the hybrids(animal people) and the cogs(androids) . pretty much all d20 can be used with it. we are mixing in some dnd. it plays well. is balanced and everything makes sense outside of a few typos in the book.

go to your local game store and see if they have it. ive seen copies several places. i think its still in print and has been out for 5 years.

I feel like steampunk would be better suited for either BESM (i.e. - mechanics are reduced to get out of the way) or a more complex system like GURPS or a shadowrun clone. I just can't get my head around d20 working for anything except... well really, much of anything, compared to so many far superior systems out there.

But that's just me.

I normally GM for my group and they are all d20 players so we mostly play DnD 3.5 and Spycraft 2.0. I'm not terribly excited about it but Rule 0 comes into play since they are happy about it.

I've seen the RPG from Mongoose and it looks pretty good for what it is. Just be willing to put up with the downsides to d20.

nezumi,

What is BESM?
Maelstrome
im curious too about this BESM.

in my experience this steampunk game is slightly better as far as mechanics but fundamentally is the same.

i have had no real problems with d20 games. sometimes i prefer a system with more detail though.

BESM (Big Eyes Small Mouth) is basically a super-simple mechanics system, meant mostly to 'get out of the way'. If I recall correctly, it has three basic stats, and everything basically supports a point-buy system. I haven't played it for a while, but it was more versatile than d20 and a lot faster to play, without being significantly less realistic (than what D20 already isn't).

I'd suggest picking up the Iron Kingdoms RPG stuff over Mongoose's Steampunk stuff. In my not so humble and obviously biaised opinion (since I write for Privateer Press, publishers of the IKRPG), it's a rock solid setting that's a ton of fun to play in. The fact it's the same setting as Warmachine and Hordes, their wargames, are just icing on the proverbial cake (icing that makes RPG miniatures plentiful and easy to get ahold of cheap on eBay).

Personally, I think the best steampunk game is Space 1889 - possibly the granddaddy of them all...
...But I like Castle Falkenstein, too.

Is the OGL Steampunk an addon for a core system or is it its own separate game?

And could I possibly find a little summary of the game with its features?
Maelstrome
ogl steampunk is a one book complete in itself game.

try the link i posted up the page. if that doesnt help at all, i will talk about it here.

The link helps, but I was looking for some features of the game from people who had played it. I looked and there's no Wikipedia page on it

I was about to say I am reading that at the moment, but I have Sorcery and Steam...
crazyconscript
I havent played it yet, but i really like the look of Broken Gears. Not sure if everyone would class it as steampunk, but i likes it. And its a D12 system grinbig.gif

Both old favorites!
Maelstrome
if i had money for more books i would go pick up some of those.

iron kingdoms looks awesome. if i had the money and a dedicated group i would get that.

anyway, steampunk uses the ogl d20 system. the main difference between its rules and dnd is it has a much different magic system and class system. there isnt really a list of spells. there are the different schools of magic and the effects that can be done in them and to what degree. in essence you make your own spells as you need them. with character classes you have you class and your vocation both of which determine your skills and feats. a vocation is pretty much a sub class of your main class. the main classes are adventurer, journeyman, occultist, investigator, scoundrel, noble and genius.adventurers are your pilots fighters and woodsmen, journeymen are your workers like mechanics, smiths and so on,occultist are your magic folk, investigators are a little hard to classify but are pretty self explanatory, and nobles are your faces.

any questions? im not good at giving out info without them.

I know I may, in fact, be lynched for saying this, but the GURPS Steampunk book is astonashingly well done and extensively researched. Even if you don't like the system it's worth a look due to it's huge base of cool ideas.

Iron Kingdoms anyone?
