Son of a crap, that never even crossed my mind. We need a
"remake' of Starship Troopers only this time done right, full power suit, no pretty boys to bring in the teen age girls, lose the tact on romance, give the bug their technology back, add the skinnies now that would be proper adaptation.

I'd settle for "powered body armor" and "Cap Troopers aren't huge poorly trained pussies" would be nice too.
But yeah, it'd be nice if they'd follow the book, at least make an effort.

Oh it's nothing in particular, I fully admit that I simply have an irrational dislike of the (make believe) man
I think it's because I've never picked up a good run of Ironman and as a result I've never been motivated to go out and
find good runs. I'm also one of those late bloomer comic geeks that never really got into them as a kid and has only discovered them now that he has the money and mobility to seek out good works. As such I don't have all these fond memories of Ironman in the same way I have of Ghostbusters or Tail Spin.
Than they did the whole "Civil War" arc, which I followed ocassionally and that just cemented my "Tony Stark is a total tool box alcoholic."
But generally speaking I fully admit that I hate Mr. Stark because I need someone to dislike and not because there is something inherently wrong with the material.
And yeah, I too am a fan of the powered suits of ultimate whup ass. They please me... They please me greatly.

At first I had real reservations about Rober Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the I heard him doing the dialog and I was hooked. Granted you can't build a movie off snarky one liners... well Joss Whedon can, but in this new trailer when he is talking about protecting the people he puts into harms way, I am really hoping it will be a character (quality of the person) driven picture similar to elements of the first spiderman. Besides how can you argue with
Reporter: Mr Stark what do you say to your nickname "the Da Vinci of our time"?
Tony: That's absurd, I don't paint.
Reporter: The what about your other nickname the Merchant of Death"?
Tony: Thats not bad.

Since Starship Troopers gets name checked a half dozen times:
You do realize that the director hated the theme of the book and satirized it completely. Its a parody of Heinlen.
that said, me and the girl are warring. She's miraculously developed a hatred of Black Sabbath since the very first trailer.
Not that I'm a huge 'Iron Man' fan, comic wise, but the trailers make me giddly as a schoolgirl.

In fact, Verhoeven admitted not ever having read the book completely as he got "bored and depressed" (quote from IMDb).
And AFAIK the movie originally had nothing to do with Starship Troopers but was called "Bug Hunt on Planet P" - only when production had already started Verhoeven learned of Heinleins somewhat similar-themed book and aquired the license...

I am pretty pumped about this as well. It looks like weve got three decent Comic based films coming up: Iron Man, the new Batman flick, and the sequel to HellBoy.
By the way, I'd like to see John Steakleys Armor (which Heinlein borrowed from when writing Starship troopers, the two were freinds) made into a film. Talk about a psycological mind-fuck of a film, it would be incredible with the right actor.

I'm aware of the sordid story that was the making of Starship Troopers. I can even accept someone satirizing one of my favorite books.
I cannot accept that someone would pass up a chance to make a movie about powered body armor and talking hand grenades.

Heinlein borrowed, what? Heinlein published starship troopers back in '59. Steakley published his Armor book in '84. On top of that Steakley was born on '51.

Ow, my brain.
They already made a Vampires movie, which is basically the same story as armor (even with the same characters, Felix and Crow are the main chars of Vampires), but with vampires instead. It sucked.

Vampire$, not
Armor. But, yes, there are a few familiar character names in it.

I love rock music more than is healthy and even I think Audioslave is bland. I thought the tiny bit of Iron Man at the end was perfect, honestly. It would have been obnoxious if they drove it into the ground, but they didn't. Both songs worked well given the context.

Iron Man is a total tool box jerkass alcoholic. That's just his character. But Civil War just butchered him, mainly by having him act so totally evil and incompetent for the purpose of shoehorning a summer blockbuster crossover that didn't make a darn lick of sense.
For good Ironman runs, I'll recommend two of my favorites, the recent Ironman: Hypervelocity miniseries and the later-80s /early 90s series in which the womanizing Stark gets shot by a pissed off girlfriend and if paralyzed from the waist down.

The second series you mention was the one that turned me into a huge Iron Man fan back then as a kid. I was only briefly in to comics (a couple of years), but my love of Iron Man has stuck with me even though I don't keep up on the workings.

reporting in from the front
i just watched the movie . .
[ Spoiler ]
it was pretty close to the comics, actually . . only thing that really disappointed me was that they had to bring in AFGHANISTAN again . . they switched out the beginning setting from china/mandarin to afghanistan . . but they hinted at it, with the group of bad guys being called the 10 rings . . that is a clear hint at the 10 rings the mandarin wore on his fingers *g*
oh, just a fair warning . . it's pretty much the marvel ultimate universe iron man, as becomes clear if you actually sit through the whole lead out of the movie . . there is another szene right behind the names scrolling by(which, actually, takes about 5 minutes . .)
nothing too spoilery, but just in case . .

It isn't Ultimate Iron Man. Ultimate Iron Man is a teenager and doesn't have shrapnel in his heart. It is Ultimate Nick Fury, which is a good thing considering that Samuel L. Jackson is substantially more baddass than David Hastlehoff.
The Afganistan thing is pretty much comics canon now, anyway, due to the sliding time scale. Originally, Stark was wounded in Korea during the Korean War and was in his late 30s/early 40s. He's still in his late 30s/early 40s.

Tony was originally injured in Vietnam, not Korea.

Non-Spoilerish stuff:
Downey Jr. was a perfect Tony Stark. He played a drunk, irresponsible playboy to a T. (Go figure.) Jeff Bridges was unrecognizeable as himself, but he still delivered the impressive performance we expect from Jeff Bridges. Gwyneth Paltrow was a surprising, but highly effective choice as Pepper Potts, and she got to deliver one of the most memorable lines from the entire movie. In fact, the only mistake in casting was Terence Howard; he gave us less Jim Rhodes and more Cuba Gooding. He did get better as the movie went on, though.

But, yes. In retrospect, I would/could/should have gone and seen it by myself, too, just to be part of the opening weekend razzle-dazzle (and to get to, y'know, see it twice). It was good enough I wouldn't have felt bad, stupid, shamed, or dorkish for having gone and seen it solo.
