OK I know it isn't possible to have specialisation in a skill group but is the following legal:

Skill Group Firearms 2 (20 bp)
Skill Automatics 4 (8bp)
Skill Pistols (revolvers) 5 (+2) (12bp)

Cheers

Technically, yes, though it is advised to not let people split groups during chargen...
And it would be 14 for the pistol skill and spec...
You should note that if you do it like this, you don't have the firearms skill group, but you used to have it, now you just have 3 skills that belong to that group...

I realised after I posted I'd missed the 2bp for taking the spec.

Why would you not advise letting people split groups during creation - I would have thought (in certain circumstances) it would be how people would pick up skills - e.g. general electronics course gets you level 1 in electroncis skill group, you then do subsequent courses on more specific areas that raise the actual skills rather than the group as a whole.

I don't advise this, my group allows splitting groups during chargen...
I just remember reading it here...

actually i dont think at character creation it is possible, because when you get the skill group you are treating it as though you have 2 in all those skills, then to buy 4 in automatics and 4 in pistol it would give you a rating 6 in two different skill groups, which is not allowed

Well that's just silly...
You buy the skill group at 2, then you split it and get the skills at 2 and then you increase the skills...
If you input silly data, you get a silly result...
But that being said, nothing in any rulebooks prohibits you from splitting groups during chargen...

QUOTE (FAQ)
When can you break up a skill group into its component skills? Can you break it up during character creation? Can I break apart a skill group in order to buy a specialization for one of the skills?

You can break apart a skill group whenever you want--as long as the GM allows it. We advise against breaking apart skill groups during character creation in order to keep it simple and counter min-maxing. Any time you improve a single skill within a skill group or add a specialization to one of those skills, that skill group no longer exists.

There is no rule against breaking a group during character creation, and so is GM's choice. As above, it is suggested not to allow so however.

On a side note, every game I have played in, the GM has allowed breaking a group during character creation, and it has never caused any problems.
