Full Version: Gaming Modules

I would like to run my group through some adventures that have a mixture of the following elements:
mystery, suspense, thrilling, horror, detective work

I am not worried about what RPG system they come from for I am willing to convert them to the Shadowrun 4ed system. I just want the story line and hooks, so if anyone has run or played any models with elements that I describe above I would really appreciate it if you could let me know the name of the adventure/module and RPG System; especially those involving detective work.

Thank you in advance.

Actually, you don't have to look any further than Shadowrun v.1 for a decent detective/thriller module: Elven Fire. I ran it with my group a few months back and they enjoyed it.

Ok, don't laugh, but I think the original Ravenloft would be a fucking hoot to convert and use. Not so much the detective work, though.

What about that Harlequin set of adventure from 1st edition? I was reading through that a few months ago and thought it would translate quite well to SR4. There's some mystery and the potential for detective work there.
Adarael
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Double Exposure. Very quiet, deep cover operation.

The 1st Ed SR module that meets all your criteria is Universal Brotherhood. That and Harlequin are available as PDFs here.

Thanks Wesley, I will take a look at it.

I was thinking about these, but I was unsure how they would be in the suspense/thriller/horror setting. Nice call; do you have any specific modules you would recommend?

I actually have that adventure, and I do plan to run them through it.

I will have to look that one up, what RPG System does it use? I know if I try looking up “Double Exposure I will receive to many links to shift through.

I have both of them in PDF format. biggrin.gif

Anyone else have any suggestions, and the adventure/module does not have to contain every element I have listed. wink.gif

Its a 2nd edition SR adventure.

I agree with the Universal Brotherhood suggestion, particularly the 1st edition module Missing Blood. When we played this years ago, it scared the crap out of me! Works best for novices to the Shadowrun universe since it involved insect spirits. It starts very mundane but develops a slow and ever increasing sense of creeping horror until it culminates in awesome violence.

I'd also suggest the 1st edition module Bottled Demon. No insect spirits but there is dark and creepy magic. Played this twice, back in the day.

And the 2nd edition module Eye Witness. Starts as a murder mystery with a plot filled with more twists than a Cirque de Soleil gymnast. And it ends with a big fight with ghouls!

seconded for eye witness. If played correcty it can be real creepy....

Cheers

Thanks for the information. Some of those might be a little hard to get now. I don't suppose anyone knows of anything current?

I very much LOVED the bottled demon run. You should give that a shot. I would say if you are looking for that feel, you could always take any module from any game setting and tweaking it for shadowrun. Call of Chatulu might work for you. Demons= spirits or horrors and your good to go. Don't want to disturb the feel of you world with another setting, just throw the players in the metaplanes and say this plane is like X. Magic patches all holes. cyber.gif

Zero Sum Game, where the mystery is

If ebay fails, you can try stores that sell used rpg products like Noble Knight Games.

Haven't run Zero Sum Game yet but I am planning to. Two other modern, free and downloadable possibilities are Aaron's, Born to Die and Knasser's Carnival. I took Born to Die, added some extra details/scenes, and ran it recently. Great fun. Carnival I haven't run - it is more of a framework than an adventure - but it would be a great fit for what you are looking for. Both can be found at Aaron's excellent site, http://pavao.org/shadowrun/adventures.

Would you mind letting me know how it turned out? I'd love to hear about it.

I agree that Eye Witness can be creepy if run correctly. However as a gamemaster I have a small problem with inserting sarcastic asides when reading box text. Thus, what should have been Bram Stoker's Dracula ended up feeling more like Abbot & Costello meet Dracula.

Personally one of my favorite adventures has been 1st ed Dreamchipper.

If you don't mind converting systems, many good adventures of the type you list can be found at Wizards of the Coast d20 modern site. Just beware the carcinogens.

If you don't minding spending some coin another good place is RPGNow.

It went great! I did change the location of the final confrontation to an abandoned hospital. Found some floorplans of a massive WWII era one and led the players through it.

Ancient,

I have started reading Zero Sum Game, and find it interesting so far; bit heavy on the language though. smile.gif

jklst14,

I had forgotten about Born to Die and the others listed on that site for I had downloaded them awhile back, and placed them in an unusal directory.

Aaron,

The girl on the front cover of Born to Die creeps me out. smile.gif I will have to read through this one.

The info on the original image should be on the first page of text. The original image and its sisters are even creepier.
WhiteWolf
Aaron,

If that spooky image creeps me out I think i will pass on viewing the original and her sisters. Thanks anyway, though they may make for some interesting props. biggrin.gif
