Ok, cruise through the Duels (Lot's of Kellen Colts for those of you that diddn't get her the first time around) and Video Game stuff (there was a Mega Drive CD, Japanese only game?) and all the cheaper novels (not one of the "Must Reads" that everyone on this board has aggreed upon) I found a 1st Ed Hardcover for $2.00 and a BABY (#827 of 1000) for $210.
A BABY is the all black HC book with the blue foil "Super S" logo, right?

Yep, BABY. I guess I get to claim responsability for that one; afaik, I was the first to propose it, on the SRmail list.
Stands for Big All Black Yearbook. My highschool's yearbook had a very similar binding / cover, and at Gencon 2000 (?) everybody was signing them just like at highschool graduation.
With the way people were treating them, "BABY" seemed an appropriate name, or at least was funny enough at the time to (sort of) stick.

Does anyone know if there are any fake BABYs out there? I mean, anytime there is a buck to be made, there is always the chance of a fake appearing...

Well I know for a fact that there are unnumbered BABY books out there, so my guess is that there are actually more then 1000 books.

Are they fakes or legit?
The unnumbered ones are definitely legit. They were sold the year after the numbered BABYs went on sale, at the Shadowrun booth at Gen Con. Turns out they found a box of them they'd overlooked the previuos year and decided to sell them. I still remember them lining us all up for the sale, which was to have stringent rules about only a certain number would be sold each day, and as it was about to start they couldn't find the box of books. Many people left, but some hung around. When they finally found the box about an hour later, Mort Weisman himself said he didn't want to screw around with the whole thing anymore and said, "Sell 'em all now."

And just a question: is this "Baby" any better than the normal books? I know content is king, but in these hard-backed copies, do the pages actually STAY IN THEIR PLACES?

I'd suggest under 100 for sure, most likely under 50. That fits within a typical print runs margin of error.
Amercian's don't have the core books in hard cover? We do too here in Spain, all of them are hardcovered... in fact, it's easy to know how much does any spanish player play on each game, judging by the estates of their corebooks.

Note that I didn't ask how they counted.
I do not know how many unnumbered books there are, I just know that I happened to own one of them. So since I don't have a number to brag about I guess I have to call mine the Stealth Baby or something :)

I have not had any pages fall out yet. OK so I don't really use that book while playing but instead a normal paperback copy.

Not more then say #325 or #323. For it to be a bump in price it would probably have to be some "special" number like say 1, 100, 1000 or 666 (don't know why but you never know there might be some kind of horror summoning spell on it). The other way to increase the value of it might be to get it signed by people that worked on it (i and many others have theirs signed).
Somewhat related to this discussion is the hardbound Earthdawn books (the red one with gold print on the cover). Don't recall now but was that a limit series of around 1000 to? I think it was. So are they valued about the same as the SR one?
One nice thing I did with mine was to track down as many artists as I could and get their signatures in the book.
I found that the Artists would often do a quick sketch as well when they sign something that big (which was unexpected) that makes the inside cover of mine very nice.
It also is the way I use to tell which baby is mine quickly other than flipping to the number page (we have three in out group)
