Full Version: Recruitment - Down the Rabbit Hole and Back Again

Alright, so, having a wonderful friend of mine starting up a PbP game here that he's letting me play in has gotten me re-invested in the concept of running a game here. So, I'm going to toss some stuff out:

Story Concept: The group is going to be escorting a pair of children, each age approximately 12-14, twins. One is magically active in some fashion, the other seems to be otaku. They're following a series of vague images the children occasionally dream, trying to track down the mystery of their conception and childhood. Neither remembers more than the last 5 years, 4 of which was in a state-run orphanage, 1 of which was in a corporate talent pen.

*Wave the GM fiat flag here* They're special, or a plot device, or whatever you want to call them. They're not going to fit the normal rules. If that bothers you, this definitely isn't a good game for you biggrin.gif

Character Concepts
Each of the characters has an emotional attachment to the twins and wants to help them. Over the last 5 years, each of the characters has been helped at crucial moments by one or both of the twins. One's an otaku, one's a mage, and while they won't be present physically, there's lots they could have done to provid help in pivotal moments in our modern, magic, wired world. This isn't a shadowrun, per say, as nobody's in it for the money. You've all come together from an individual desire to help the children. I'm not saying you can't make a buck along the way, you have to be self sufficient, but that's not the point. Even the ice cold sociopath needs to be emotionally attached to the children.

Concept Requirements
If you want to toss in your hat, awesome. I'll need a character concept, and here's the twist. The first part of the OCC thread will be people's history. You'll be posting 5 posts, one each that occurred in each of the previous 5 years. Each post will detail out the pivotal moment that one of the children helped you. So, you'll need 5 moments. I'm looking for 2-3 paragraphs for each post. If these are combined posts with multiple's backgrounds woven together in these pivotal moments, even better. I'll do a post in the OCC Thread saying something like, "History Posts -5" and everyone will post their history post from 5 years back, then I'll say "History Posts -4", and you'll post 4 years back, etc. The last post will be the group breaking the children out of the corporate location. This will be an event that happens with the other members, but you'll be writing from your perspective. Again, only requiring a minimum of 2-3 paragraphs, and from your character's point of view.

So, if you're interested in the game, I'm offering up 4 slots. There will be a total of 8 players, but I've got four slots reserved for people I believe are coming. I'm willing to accept up to 2 more people for waitlist, basically, because I know PbP games. People leave, drop, disappear, etc. smile.gif So, 6 potential applicants, recruiting is open for one week. I'll choose my four members and 2 waitlists then, at which point we'll start posting history. I'm estimating 2-3 weeks for histories, by which time your character must be mechanically complete.

Mechanics

Build Points - So, the characters will be normal 400bp characters. Don't care what walk of life/background/species/etc, as long you meet the Concept Requirements. There will be extensive traveling, so always nice if there's a character or two that knows their way around a vehicle and maybe how to move around between policed areas.

Extra Points - I'll be handing out an extra 5 bp each for a couple of things:

1.) If 2 or more of your 4 solo previous history posts include at least one other character
2.) If all 4 of your previous posts include at least one other character
3.) If your history contains detailed information about at least 3 other NPC's besides people you get build points for or spend build points on. (i.e., besides enemies and contacts) Detailed means a brief history (grew up in a Yametetsu corporate enclave, graduated at the head of his class, bachelors in cybernetic theory), enough information to get a good sense of their personality, and their current whereabouts/job etc. Can't be dead.

Contacts - For each of your contacts, I'll need Names, personalities, locations, sphere of influence (Seattle Blackmarket, international art fence, UCAS Smugglers, etc), and why they're your contact.

Flaws - make your flaws reasonable. No allergies to sun screen, and I'll happily inflict things like lifestyle increases for allergies to soy, etc. I'm a little ban happy when it comes to things I consider unreasonable, so just don't be surprised if I make comments like, "That's only worth half the points," or "Pick something else."

Freaks - I love freaks of all shapes and sizes, so bring 'em. However, I also love emphasizing the fact that they're freaks, so expect the social drawbacks to be significant.

Plan long term. Games going to take months, I promise you, so don't freak out if a few days go by without a post. That said, if you don't post anything for 2 weeks, I'm going to bump you and bring in a waitlist person. No offense, don't require everyday posts, but two weeks seems plenty long enough.

Experience
I'll be doing big bumps of experience when story goals are accomplished, plus 1 point of xp per week, as long as you post IC that week.
Xahn Borealis
Is it SR4 or 3? Cos otaku are technomancers now.
Fenris
I'm a bit old school. Sorry, should have been technomancer, it's definitely 4th Ed.
Combat Mage
I'm really interested. I don't have a real life game at the moment so I'm always looking for interesting PBP games. I spent a lot of hours every day studying at the computer so I have the time for frequent forum visits.

This game looks like it is a very refreshing break from the standard runs and I love having emotional attachements to NPCs in my characters, makes the game more personal.

Since you said you like freaks I'd love to try something more extravagant, since I've only played "normal" characters so far.

So I'm thinking of a strongly SURGEd character, probably a mage, preferably of my own tradition (been thinking up a tradition loosely based on D&D Sorcerers).

As soon as I've decided on more details, I will start working on a background.

Since we are encouraged to share background with other characters I'd like to work with some other players on the background weaving.

Greetings,
Combat Mage
CollateralDynamo
This sounds pretty interesting. I've only done one other PBP game on here and it sort of swallowed itself. I also tried to run one but...results weren't what I expected. I'd be willing to give it another go if'n you'll have me.

I'm not entirely sure on the character concept, I'm flexible as to what is needed. But my two primary thoughts right now are:
1) Big troll bruiser from the streets. He intimidates everyone and most people imagine that he eats kids for breakfast. Except these two which he plays mama bear to, for some as yet decided reason.

-or-

2) Ex-corporate face. He's sleek, he's a little more mirror shade. He has ins and outs with corporate life mostly, but time as a fixer gives him the needed connection to the shadows. Probably splash in some stealth and some high-tech 'ware from his days in the corp and you have a stone-cold killer who can give you a convincing smile while shooting you...and covering the kids' eyes of course.

Both of these characters I think would provide interesting interactions with "children" as they bumble through helping them in the world.

I definitely think the roleplay aspect of the PbP games should be emphasized, and I'm happy to work with anyone to weave our stories together once we decide which character I'm going to roll. (Or if you'll even let me in smile.gif)
Combat Mage
I thought a bit and I'm going with a young SURGEd elf mage with a tiger theme, i.e. reddish-brown skin with black stripes, a furry tiger tail, cat eyes etc.
Mainly combat and utility spells. Also probably passable at stealth.
Character-wise he is going to be a friendly but hot-tempered guy, who will try to be an older brother to the kids instead of an authority figure or a pure bodyguard.

I'm going to start thinking about a background.

EDIT:
I'm not 100% clear on our characters involvement with the twins. Should the characters already know about the twins during the last 5 years when they got help from them, or did the twins help as "mystery force" without the character knowing about them beforehand and getting to know them because of those incidents?
I'm guessing the latter but I want to make sure.

So for example my character got lost while astrally projecting and can't find the way back to his body, and suddenly a mysterious child appears in astral space and guides him back. Would that be in league of what you imagined?
CollateralDynamo
Furry! wink.gif

If you're going street perhaps disparity would be good and I should go corporate.
Combat Mage
Actually I'm not sure yet if he's more street or corporate. Probably a little of both. I'm thinking kid from a poor neighborhood that got discovered by a corp and put into a program supposed to breed loyal corp mages where he studied the basics of magic. After a few years he SURGEd and was kicked out of the program because he did not fit the corps image anymore.

So he'll probably have quite a bit of corporate education but not the mindset to go along with it, to freethinking and spontaneous for that. But I'm still in the concept phase so it's still subject to change.
CollateralDynamo
I would think that the corp would put up with a ton of crap from someone like you. Even if you were a SURGEd out freak, you are still awakened. They would hold on to you like grim death IMO, or break you so nobody else could use you. But maybe that's just my interpretation. wink.gif
Combat Mage
Yeah I could see that. But there's a lot of ways he could have gotten out of there. Maybe the twins were involved. More ideas for my encounters with the twins. wink.gif

But as I said it's still in the concept phase so maybe I'll change or scratch the corp part.
horvagab
I might be interested, either as a technomancer (possibly ex-Horizon) or maybe a "recovering" blood mage from Aztlan if that's possible. Not sure about other background though.

I don't see a problem with that. A 'recovering' blood Mage protecting children seems like a very classic redemption story.

I love furry, so go right ahead wink.gif As for the children, they would definitely make sure you knew who was helping. They'd give the impression they knew you specifically were in danger, and came to help you.

Collateral Dynamo, either concept sounds fine.

I'll throw my name in the hat with Carter

Name: Carter Milltall
Sex: Male
Race: Human
DOB: January 19, 2034
Current Status: Deceased

Specializing in first contact and deep cover assignments for the UCAS (NSA anti-terrorism division), Carter spent the better part of ten years with one p'fix or another overwriting his psych profile. His operational background sent him across North America and Europe to quietly infiltrate threats to national security and gather intelligence on terrorist actions against the UCAS and her allies.

With the Crash, NSA files became corrupted from the Jormungand virus and orders to send in support for Carter and his partner within a terrorist group known as the New Revolution were lost. He was declared MIA and finally deceased in the fallout of the coup and General Colloton's martial law decree. Unable to go home, for fear of the forces moving within his own government, Carter liquidated what assets he could and began the only life that was left to him.

The last few years have seen Carter nursing a hatred for the corruption he sees inside the government structure of the UCAS, a hatred which has eaten at him for his own lack of integrity and inability to stand against it. This has led him to develop his own personal code of honor with individuals rather than organizations. He has no loyalty to corporations, governments or ideals and a barely concealed contempt for dogmatic followers of the social norm.

With a complex reckoning of favors owed and favors due, the one time special agent owes three big ones. Carter doesn't know what Jonathan's connection to the Wonder Twins is, but he is doing what he needs to do in order to fulfill the debt. Now he just has to hope that the other two don't call in their chip before he's done here.

I felt like writing a bit from a 1st-person perspective to get a feel for my character. So here's Tiger talking to some lady. (Spoilered just for space)

I'm interested.

What I'm thinking right now is a genecraft attempt at a 'designer baby', an experiment that the twins helped escape the lab. She would be pretty old by experiment standards; whatever corp grew her is actually looking at what happens to designer babies in the long term. Do they spontaneously die after ten years? Do they get super-cancer? Let's grow one, keep it around, and find out.

After escaping the lab in the wake of the chaos left by Crash 2.0, she goes to ground. By the time the campaign starts, she's been working as a courier/delivery girl/urban smuggler for several years. The twins are the ones who guided her out of the lab safely, and helped her set up a life outside of the laboratory.

I haven't decided on the exact build of the character. But, I'm thinking either elf or human. At this point, I'm thinking she'd have high skills in running, gymnastics, and pilot groundcraft. She'd be passable in one form of weapon (blades, clubs, or pistols), talking her way through places, piloting aircraft and sneaking around. I can adjust.

Let me know what you think; I'll get more in-depth in a day or so.
horvagab
Tough call between the character concepts. On the one hand, a legwork-heavy techno has been interesting for me, especially since in Corporate Guide it was mentioned that Horizon was starting a Techno Uni program with CalTech, so my character attended at, and somehow the twins "extracted" him from Horizon after he graduated.

The other one would be an Orkish aztec magician from Street Magic, who worked at Stuffer Shack until he Awakened. He would be more of an Occult Investigator, and somehow he'd got caught up in blood magic, maybe as a way for him to buff his magic so he can more easily catch bad guys or something. Another story could be how someone close to him died, and maybe the twins helped him through his grief, and saved him from himself.

Btw, you mentioned other players, do we know what kind of characters they're playing? So we can adjust to that. And what do we know of the twins? Or what do the characters know?

EDIT: AStarshipForAnts, have you thought of the Escaped Clone quality? Could fit your concept, especially if you're a clone of someone famous maybe.

I have been considering it. It would be interesting to see how that would pan out, especially if the cloned individual ended up contributing to the plot. I'm currently trying to decide whether or not I want the character to have some bioware or go completely unaugmented. I'm not sure how acquiring that kind of work after the extraction would work, in terms of backstory and justification for having it.

Right now, I'm thinking about having the character wear a jumpsuit and respirator combo all the time. Either she's actually allergic to pollutants--all that time spent in a sterile lab, you know--or she isn't, but uses the excuse in order to hide her gender and appearance all the time.

I'd like to know this as well.
Digital Heroin
As I'm co-ordinating between work (where I'm at now) and home, the boards are infinitely easier for me to work on.

Salt will be the first to admit that, while he had Instruction background, and he's had to lead a section before, he is not actually a trained Captain. He knows the Navy inside and out, and he knows piracy and pirates a fair bit as well, but he's never been the master of a vessel, save on paper.

Current potential character list:
Mister Juan - Jiro
Bishop - Carter
Combat Mage - Tiger
Astarshipforants - Synth
Digital Heroin - Salt
Buddhaboy72 - ????
JxJxA - ????
MrAres - ????

Clarification - Still accepting entries. No final decisions have been made yet.

Just to clarify for everyone. I haven't gotten character concepts from Budda, JxJx, and Ares, but I know at least two of those will be in this weekend before the one week deadline.

To answer general questions about the twins, everyone knows the following:

Being identical twins and in their early teens, the twins look similar. Standing about 5 feet tall, Nasho and Malshi (Nosh and Mal, for short) are both fairly slender, dusky skinned and brunette. The girl, Nosh, is the technomancer, and her avatar (a dragon whelp) shares it's emerald green color with a shock of her hair, slightly to the left of the center, that runs through the middle of her otherwise dark brown hair. Mal, the mage, wears his long black hair in a braid down his back. Both kids have round, violet eyes and expressive, open faces. Despite their odd situation, they both seem to still evidence a certain amount of child-like innocence and enthusiasm.

Working backwards to respond to posts:

Digital Heroin - You're welcome to bring Salt if you want. There may even be a point at which the Naval background is useful smile.gif I just want to make sure you're okay if it's not a focus for a big chunck of the adventure.

Astarshipforants - Sorry I couldn't give you a better idea of the group mix right now, but the concepts will be up soon enough. The character concept sounds interesting.

Mister Juan - The character idea works, but I didn't see anything in the entire list of questions that talked about the characters interaction with the twins. Where in your background is the tie in? I admit, I was hoping for the character's background to be a little more tied into the game concept.
BishopMcQ
Fenris--Is it safe to assume the twins were born in 2060 and will be 12-13 at game start?

That will let me build up some of my backstory, and tie them in a little closer than the paying back a favor. (Thinking with it started there a few years back, and has been a continuing spiral of little things and connections...)

Don't worry about that; I'm not completely done yet wink.gif This was mainly the character's rough background. I do plan to go into more details. I haven't finished writing it, but in a nutshell, I was going to hold the twins responsible for Jiro's escape from jail, and as the main source of information / help in his "revenge" quest.
Combat Mage
I see the escape thing will be a big theme with the twins. I was also planning to have the twins help Tiger escape from a corp program he needed to get out of and I think AStarshipforAnts plans something similar. Only fitting that we get them out of something too. wink.gif
Buddha72
Hey all! One of the reserved slot people here (that sounds wrong). I was planning on playing a Free Spirit (since the GM is open to freaks) somehow created by the Twins or something they did. The details are a little fuzzy so I am going to try and sit down in the next few days and iron out some details. I should have a more detailed post up by the weekend.
AStarshipforAnts
Notes: Here’s a more in-depth character concept. I’m leaving room for more back story development, in case other PCs make an appearance, and possible augmentations. Personally, I don’t see J.D. getting out of the lab facility on her own. I think that she and the twins helped a runner or two get through security before J.D. was extracted.

I haven’t decided on who J.D. is a clone of; I thought it would be more fun to work that out with the input of other people.

Renard - Pretty sure the final picks haven't been made so feel free to throw up a post about your character.

For anyone getting into the final pick I would love to work a way for my character to help in your backstory. My rough idea is that I was a spirit frequently summoned by the magic using twin and sent on tasks. Over time I was turned into an ally spirit and then eventually freed. My character would still feel an emotional connection to his/her creator and to the rest of the group - having helped them out of various troubles at the behest of the twins. My character would be seeking a way to repay the gift of freedom the twins gave him/her and the rest of the group would be the closest thing he/she would have to friends/family.

Let me know if anyone is interested in the idea.

Renard - Recruiting's still got a few more days, so as long as you get a character concept in by the 21st, you'll be considered.

OK, I think I can manage that...
Anything still needed or is it free for all ?
Buddha72
Still pretty much a free for all at this point.
JxJxA
Ooooops, sorry for not replying sooner. *^_^* Since I'm late to the party, I'd be willing to play whatever role the party needs. I was thinking about a human street samurai with a superhero complex (think Green Arrow with swords or guns). Would that still work with who we have?
MrAres
Ello all. My plan was to do an close combat Adept. General idea was to play some one who grew up on the streets having to literally fight all the time for his(maybe her?) survival. Since awakening (haven't looked at the books in a bit so i don't remember exactly how it works) they have looked at violence and confrontation as a form of art and path to their own little bit of enlightenment. I see them following, or attempting to atleast, some sort of warrior-monk (emphasis on warrior) code as they travel down their path.
Thats just a rough rough idea, and I am also very down for interweaving backgrounds with others.
Btw, any idea if the game is going to be based in a particular location? Or more like the gloabtrotting sort??
Fenris
MrAres - Assume this game will be more of the globetrotting wort, so I'd suggest looking for global or international connections in your background, or background skills and Edges, etc that aren't too locally focused.

Bishop - Sorry I missed your question. It is safe to assume that the twins look 12-13 years old. No actual facts on a birthday.

Priye (pronounced PREE YAY - Hindi for Beloved) is a spirit granted her freedom by the twins after years of service to them. She was frequently summoned and asked to help them and others in the world. She felt drawn to them and their way of viewing good and evil, man and divinity. After being freed she pledged herself to their cause and well being, she had developed attachments to all the others she had helped - this curious longing to stay with them and to see what happened around them and to them leaves her uneasy but she is determined to see what unfolds.

Her knowledge of magic is strong though slightly skewed from that of a Awakened person but her understanding of the world and especially technology is minimal at best. She is unsure what it means to exist as a free entity but plans to make something of her life to prove herself worthy of the gift of sapience and free will.

Note: So Free Spirit PCs are spendy so I'll have five skills and be pretty hard to kill with small arms fire with some knowledge skills about magic and spirits and that's about it. I would classify this character as an investment one. biggrin.gif
malachite333
Kyle was once a medical researcher for a corp and did a lot of surgery by jumping into a specialised piece of kit. In the same facility some research was being done on a recovered fragment of Jormungand which went catastrophicaly wrong and trapped Kyle as an e-ghost. He somehow survived the complete purge of the computer banks and spent the next 6 months as what was effectively a poltergiest until an encounter with one of the twins during which he recovered his memory and escaped from the lab. Since then he has been desperatly looking for a way to return to his human form, but so far has had to make do with a juryrigged collection of mismatched second hand cyberlimbs to give him the semblance of still being human.
Fenris
Alright, so I'm going to go ahead and close the recruitment portion of the proceedings smile.gif Thank you to everyone that submitted a character, I thought they were all interesting to read. Lots of great submissions. Unfortunately, I've got to pick 8 to actually play. The other 4 will be added to the queue, and if people drop or are dropped for a lack of response, you're welcome to step in. Since your characters already have background with the twins, it should be easy to pretty quickly get you in.

So, the main group are as follows:
Buddha72 - Priye - Free Spirit
MrAres - Close combat ninja phys-ad killer ( wink.gif )
BishopMcQ - Carter - Infiltration specialist
JxJxA - Human Street Sam Superhero
Combat Mage - Tiger - SURGE'd Elf Warlock
AStarshipforAnts - JD - Designer smuggler
Digital Heroin - Salt - Ex-Navy seaman
Malachite333 - Kyle - A.I. doctor?

In the Queue:
Mister Juan - Jiro - Ex-Yakuza Close Combat Specialist
Collateral Dynamo - Troll bruiser or Ex-corporate Face
Horvagab - Ex-Aztlan bloodmage or Ex-Horizon Techomancer
Renard - Beagle - Human Detective

Please don't immediately dismiss the game if you didn't make the first cut. The next three weeks are going to be the history posts.

I'll be posting a new history prompt (-5 years, -4 years, etc.) in a new OOC thread every 4-5 days, starting tomorrow. Each character must respond before the next history prompt is posted with your background event with the twins. Your event can take place anytime within 12 months after the date listed on the post. If you do not post by the time the next history prompt is posted, you will be cut. Don't forget to coordinate backgrounds with people if you're planning on taking the extra build points.

I mentioned before that I required a post every two weeks, this period with the history posts is the only exception to that rule.

Additionally, you must have a completed character sheet with point expenditures spelled out (by section, I want to know how many points were spent on stats, how many on skills, etc. I will be spot checking, and how many of the extra build points you're claiming) ready by July 12th, 2010. If your character sheet is not completed and turned in by July 12th, you're out of the game and I'll bring someone from the queue in.

Sorry to sound so extreme with the deadlines, but I don't want the game to flounder and die before it even gets moving. I know it takes time, I'm just not going to hold up the whole game for a single person.

Thank you to everyone who submitted, I'm honored you all found the concept interesting enough to pitch in. Hopefully everyone enjoys it.

Awesome. I look forward to this.

Is anyone up for collaborating back stories? Since J.D.'s a smuggler, she can pretty much show up wherever. The character's only real limitations are that she's stuck in a subterranean laboratory until 2069. After that, the sky's the limit.

Edit: PM me with ideas, or just to say that you're interested in having J.D. show up in your character's back story.
Combat Mage
Glad to be in the game.

I'm sorry if it came up before and I just missed it but in what year exactly are we breaking out the twins? 2072? The exact year would be helpful so I cant get my timeline straight and develop my history posts.

Also I'm up for anyone sharing backgrounds. My characters out and free from '68 on.
Fenris
The year the game starts will be 2074, so first year will be 2068 (I'm putting the fifth year and the breakout in separate years smile.gif )
