Here's my rolls for spoofing an ID and a scan to attempt to find the boat's node, if it exists. Believe the book said it was an extended test but required 4 successes (normally). If you need any other rolls or I forgot any, let me know.
Spoofing an ID

Spoofing an ID. (9d6.hits(5)=3)Hunting for a Hidden Wireless Node for the Boat (Extended)
E.War + Scan (9)

And here's the rolls for Smiley's encryption tri-fecta:
Encryption(Skill 3 + Cyberware 2 + Program 5 = 10 dice)
10d6.hits(5) → [4,1,5,4,6,6,3,2,3,5] = (4)
10d6.hits(5) → [1,4,6,6,5,3,2,4,1,6] = (4)
10d6.hits(5) → [6,4,3,2,1,2,5,5,6,5] = (5) No idea how long it'd take to do all that, but the book doesn't say. I figure he'll be done by the time they've made it to the checkpoint they'll no doubt have for us.

Man, even after my absense, folks still come out when I post. You guys are awesome.
I won't post an update tonight, but I shall tomorrow night after work.
@AStarshipforAnts: Go ahead and post your charsheet in the OOC thread. I've seen all I need to of it. When I post tomorrow, I'll be inserting you into the game as per the backstory and write-up you gave me.
To be clear, even though we have a good many inactives, I'm assuming that the ENTIRE TEAM (Yes, even Sangre, Dexter, and the others) are there. Yes some things might get handwaved and stuff goes on in the background. Assume the others are there, just not being real prominent in the action.
I should be providing a way to have them fade out as this current scene plays out. Then when/if they want to get back into the game, they can do so without really screwing with the flow or storyline.
To everyone: I have seen your rolls and taken note of them. When I update I'll give you each the results of what you guys did.

Numbers |Fixer| (Loyalty 3, Connections 3)
Harper’s fixer from the old days, a surprisingly urbane troll with a soft spot for young girls in a tough spot. He and the razor girl worked together for the entirety of Harper’s time in the shadows.
Bruno Kruger |Weapons Dealer and Armorer|(Loyalty 2, Connections 4)
Kruger and Harper have done business for about five years. They met through a friend of a friend of Numbers and Zero. The arms dealer thinks that Harper is careless and that special kind of stupid that only comes with youth. Harper thinks Kruger is a crotchety old fogey. But, they’ve done a lot of business in the past, enough to exchange a small dance of banter every time Harper goes shopping.
Back Story[ Spoiler ]
Harper’s life is all but a long list of bad decisions and poor planning. The girl was born to a single mother, Caitlin Price, joining two older brothers and an older sister. She was a mediocre student at best—when her single mother still made an effort to force Harper to pay any attention to the educational sims. Harper barely learned the bare minimum of literacy and arithmetic. Even then, it was painfully obvious that she was not a bright child.
Exhausted by trying to keep her family fed and clothed, Caitlin soon gave up on trying to get her youngest some form of education. Harper spent her childhood playing in the streets, or following around whichever older sibling was supposed to be watching her that day. Years passed. Life happened. The younger of Harper’s older brothers, Philip, had a late goblinization that he didn’t adjust well to. Harper’s older sister, Samantha, left town one day and never returned.
After that, it was all a broken string of events. Philip and Scott donning gang colors. Scott losing an eye. Their mother losing first one job, then the other, succumbing to the bottle and then to alcohol poisoning. Harper taking up her brothers’ colors. The fights. The parties. A woman named Zero who was elegant and graceful and dangerous like a trid-star anti-hero, but even better. A woman named Zero asking Harper if she’d heard anything about a man who passed by recently. A woman named Zero who was everything Harper had ever dreamed of being.
Even faster: the drinking, the experiments with drugs, chats with Zero that turned into keeping watch for Zero and her posse. The errands that seemed so thrilling and adventurous because Harper was finally figuring out what kind of person Zero might be. The gang fights. Harper’s first knife. Harper’s first gun. Harper’s first kill. And so it went on until one day, at the age of sixteen, Harper realized that she’d missed two periods.
Philip and Scott helped Harper scrounge up enough money to see a local street doctor. But, by the time all of the complications were handled, the cesarean-section complete, and unconscious Harper’s faceless baby given up, it wasn’t enough. Philip took out a loan to save his sister’s life—which Harper didn't find out until half way through her recovery. A few words from the street doc and Zero netted the girl a few easy jobs to start helping Philip pay back those loans.
Three years later, the loans were all paid back and then some. But, by then Harper had taken out her own loans for implants. It wasn’t until she was twenty-two that Ms. Price became haunted by the child she gave up, even as she worked as a hired thug for a group of shadowrunners. By then, Zero and her team had already left the shadows. Those that lived had found there little piece of property in somewhere warm to live out the rest of their days.
Four years after that, Harper finally paid of the last of her debt, and had amassed a tidy little nest egg. She could leave the shadows. She could retire. She could go back home. She could track down the baby she gave up nine years ago and take care of it. Maybe she’d even go to school, get a respectable job. Life was looking up for Harper after one last big heist.
She remembers gearing up for the run. But, after that, it’s a bit hazy. Then hazier. And then it’s all a Laes-induced nothing until the razor girl wakes up, weeks gone from her memory. Harper had nothing on her: no guns, no knives, no armor, no comlink. Her bank account with that tidy little nest egg is frozen, she’s coming off of the worst high ever, and she’s chained up to some sorry looking chicas in some hell-hole.

Welcome aboard Astarshipforants.
Here's a series of three rolls for attempting to decrypt the system information. Apparently it's one combat turn per attempt so I didn't want to jump too far ahead. I went ahead and used a point of Edge pre-roll for the first roll. Only got one six. Pretty sure god doesn't want me to slip into that system. Anyways here's the rolls.

Alright, I made a couple of POV posts for two of the characters since I saw that I needed to give them something specific to their perspectives. The rest, however, are now within range to do whatever deviousness they would like. I know there were some plans being tossed around before the jaunt to Pier 40, and en route to the location, but whatever is going down, everyone should start on it.
Also, I mentioned that everyone, even the inactives, were currently involved in the scene, albeit in the background. Martin has been quiet for a while, and I'm still assuming that Coatl is nearby, unless somebody mentioned something specific about what to do with him. This has to do with how this part at the docks is going to play out, so basically I'm wondering what was being down with Coatl now that everyone is down at Pier 40. Was he going to walk up to the Leviathan with everyone else or hang back?

OK, that sort of makes sense
I was wondering if I was failing my skill test on basic computer skills!
Starting my 10 posts now!
Street Magic describes Santeria (practiced in the Caribbean - Venezuela/Cuba/Santo Domingo, etc.) and Cantomble (Brazil/Amazonia) as variant forms of the
VooDoo (Haiti and New Orleans) Tradition. So was going to use that Tradition to build my character. However it is a
Possession tradition which I know many GM's frown upon since summoned Spirits take over the Body of the Magician instead of Materializing. If you would prefer that Santeria be a "normal" tradition I am ok with that, although would enjoy playing the Possession.
I was thinking of playing a magician with ties to Amazonian interests, which may be a good lead into meeting the rest of the team. Think part-time informant, not secret agent or deep affiliation with government agency.

Nov 30 2010, 11:47 AM
No problem. I have been working on the background, but before I get too long into it, a couple of comments/questions/disclosures:
1. I have been using the sourcebook Vice in my RL game. One of the gangs described within is Comando Verde - an amazonian pro-eco group active around South America. Would like to have a contact from this gang in Caracas. In your world are they active in the city?
2. Planning on taking Prejudice. Feel like prejudice to Azzies would be too "cheesy" and not noir enough; in PM (once I get full access) will elaborate more on alternative prejudices - will want your thoughts on which would fit best for you.
3. Planning on using real world knowledge of Caracas to weave into background. Any concerns?
Abschalten
Nov 30 2010, 12:19 PM
1. I haven't worked them into the city yet. That's not to say they don't exist, it's just that there's only so much a handful of people can take into consideration when world-building, especially from the barebones description of Caracas from Runner Havens. They could possibly (probably) be worked in, you'll just have to give me time to read Vice and see where they'd fit in.
2. To be totally fair, a couple of people have taken Prejudices in their characters and not done a spectacular job of playing them out. The blame falls on me as well, partially, for not enforcing it. If you pick a Prejudice, it would need to be something meaningful and something you'd be willing to show on your own, without GM prodding.
3. My only concern is that the vast majority of us haven't been to Caracas. My own personal knowledge of it comes from the internet, Shadowrun material, and the driblets I get from a classmate who's actually been there. My research is a far cry from having actually been to the city.
My modus operandi for fleshing out Caracas is usually to consult with the official Shadowrun material first. Whatever is not put in stone I consider to be within my rights to alter. I did tweak some neighborhoods as to make them more different from each other, since Runner Havens paints them with a pretty broad brush.
Where more neighborhoods were needed, I usually looked for a suitable one via Google Maps, and combined that with as much internet research as I can and a dash of artistic license.
Whatever is not put in stone in the game, however, is fair game for tinkering. Doc Chase, for example, has done a masterful job at world-building and I wouldn't dishonor his efforts by overwriting his stuff. He's actually done such a good job describing some settings that I didn't even bother to follow that up with words of my own, unless it was necessary.
While you have real-world knowledge of Caracas, just keep in mind most of us have never been there. I encourage you to use that knowledge, just be mindful that this is a collaborative game. If something already established rubs you wrong, just remember it's fiction and this isn't the real Caracas. While I like using real world knowledge in developing settings, a good time for the gaming group is paramount. I'll smash a neighborhood into the ground and put up a bunch of brothels, bars, and arcades in its place if I think it makes for a good time.
Isinghar
Nov 30 2010, 02:00 PM
1. Cool. I was not expecting them to be a major player like La Alianza or Bolivar '49, just a small presence in the city to smuggle in Awakened Drugs from Amazonia and keep an eye on the other Cartel activity. Did not want to be linked to either local gangs because looks like team will be pissing both off at some time
2. Agreed, I will have to run with it. I did not want to pick the Azzies as focus of Prejudice, since that is like picking prejudice for the Nazis! Everyone fears/mistrusts/hates them, plus the campaign focus is to stop their plans, so did not feel like a
real disadvantage at this point in the story line. However what I have in mind should meet your expectations.
3. Also agreed. What I have read on canon (Runner Havens) Caracas fits very well with what I would expect to happen to the City in the post-Awakening world of Shadowrun. As a matter of fact some of the slums fit the bill today (unfortunately). I was planning on developing the area known as Barlovento. This is a region just east of La Guaira (northeast of Caracas itself), which is made up of a few small villages of ex-slave populations that worked the cacao and coffee plantations in the area. The beaches today attract many city-dwellers and the famous drums of Barlovento date back from the African roots of the population. I was going to use this setting for my character's backstory.

Nov 30 2010, 06:56 PM
I would be honored to provide virtual tours of Caracas. To start I did have a few questions about existing infrastructure to help me visualize the Caracas of the future.
1. There are a number of parks in the City. One that borders the Chacao area is "Parque del Este". It is a pretty big park, and many joggers and athletes use the facilities every day, and gets pretty crowded during weekends. Is park still around? If so, would be a great place to set a meeting with Mr. Johnson's, etc. Also can imagine the park used by Santeros to practice communal dances and rituals at night. In Google Maps link with pictures:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=10.492644,-...m.panoramio.all2. The Caracas Metro (subway) is a pretty efficient way to get around town. There is no mention if still in operation. If it is, great! My character will use Metro since he has no skill in driving/riding vehicles! If abandoned would be a good way for smugglers to get around, and all sorts of illicit activity could be growing in the tunnels.
3. There is an old cable-car system (teleferico) that takes passengers up the Avila mountain to the Humboldt Hotel and Planetarium. Again all sorts of interesting setting ideas for an old abandoned Hotel sitting on the peak of the mountain...

Doc and I have talked about the Metro system in Caracas. I believe we decided that it was largely abandoned in and around La Rinconada, but that it might be alive in the "better" parts of town. The tunnels beneath La Rinconada, however, are more than likely host to all sorts of crazy shit.

. Be a good first lesson for the crew of muneca pirates that Starships bring to us, right Starship?
By the way Isinghar, how's traffic and it's laws in Caracas? I've been kinda curious just how ludicrous Smiley's little driving stunts are considering how congested the streets oughta be.

Streets are very congested during peak hours (which is nearly all the time

)
However at night in some parts of town you can race at high speeds. I remember when I was a young lad (many years ago) when I would race my Dad's car (we had a souped up Honda Prelude) that did ok, along the Autopista Este-Oeste.

In my case, it just hasn't come up. The little bit of magic that's gone on in this game has been pretty far removed from Mono. That said, adding possession tradition mage to the group would certainly make me earn the bp I got from that background. similar to the challenge of playing Paranoia without ditching the game. Hopefully I can pull it off in a way that doesn't derail anything important (or if it does, hopefully it will at least derail in a fun and interesting way).
So, just to make it clear, Isinghar, any attitude your character gets from El Mono is strictly in-character.
Oh yeah, while I'm posting: finals are next week. I'll be a bit scarce at least until next Friday, but after that, I've nothing but holiday merriment keeping me from the game until the next quarter starts in Jan.

Well, not to bring anybody out here, but I'll use Coatl as an example.
Coatl has a Prejudice against Azzies, and yet when he and Sonora were thrown together, the prejudice never came up. I figured something of Aztlan would be on her tongue. That combined with her skin tone and general appearance should have thrown red flags up, I would think. I didn't want to drop anvils in pointing it out, or maybe there was IC justification, you know, people trying to kill them and all made him not think about it. But I was hoping there'd be at least a little tension there.

Depending on the lighting, Smiley would look pretty Aztlaner himself ya know.

I will take it personally and fry Mono's brains with my awesome powers. I am watching you...

Heh, that's also on me. Sonora doesn't have a physical description beyond 'Elf, Hispanic, female, frail, long dark hair, taller.' That's the trouble with being able to facedance like she can - I never know what her 'normal' is now. Maybe I'll make ASFA ink another picture.

Is she Aztlaner? Absolutely. I suppose I'll start working in how I can show that in her speech patterns or if she decides to tell the truth for once if anyone asks her about her background.

Just be careful... He doesn't know it, but El Mono has awesome powers of his own.

To the native latin american it is pretty easy to notice the cultural differences between regions.
Differences in physical appearance are not as easy to spot, but generally Mexicans have higher percentage of of mestizos (European mixed with Indigenous), vs mulattos (European mixed with African races) in Venezuela and the Caribbean nations. So Mexicans tend to have more prominent noses, almond shaped eyes, straight hair, etc., while Venezuelans will have darker skins, broader noses, curly hair. Of course this is a generalization, and there are always exceptions to the rule.
On the other hand, language used, accents, and slang is a dead giveaway of ethnic group. I can tell a Mexican from an Argentinian or a Colombian just by their accents. Think of it like an American speaking English vs an Englishman or a Scotsman. Slang used in Mexico includes words like "buey", "chingada", "ese", etc. that are not used in Venezuela at all. Instead we use "chamo", "pendejo", "pana", etc.
I'm sure Sonora would easily be able to modulate her accent, but for the average non-face character it is a lot harder.
