[ Spoiler ]
Name: Ben Swimswithsharks Campbell
Race: Sea Drake
Age: 19
Bio:
[ Spoiler ]
Ben was just a regular kid in lower income Seattle. A bit of a late bloomer and not particularly good at school, at sports, or with the girls. Still, he always felt he was destined for greatness. His father, a Sioux shaman, left him at a very young age and his mother, a Japanese Ork raised him as best she could while working several jobs. A pink skin, not fitting in with the orks, or the humans in his life Ben developed into a bit of a loaner. Things were even worse in the matrix. Shortly after graduating, he answered the call of the first recruiter to show interest in him. That was when things changed for him.
During standard screening, navy doctors discovered Ben's talent. He was quickly whisked out of boot camp to the hermetic academy at Annapolis. Unfortunately for his military career, it turns out his father had a larger influence on him than he thought. His talent expressed itself as shamanism and he felt the call of the Great Shark.
After failing out of the hermetic academy, Ben was sent back through boot camp and assigned to the marine infantry as a field magical support technician. There he used his talent to the great aid of his platoon. Still as a magician, and worse a shaman, he never quite managed to fit in. Plus, he couldn't shoot very straight and he was an absolute rock with the Tacnet.
While on a training mission in the Philippines, Ben's life changed again. His squad's AAV came under assault by a band of magically augmented islamic separatists. After a brief battle, the AAV was sinking. At some point before crush depth, Ben's other talent expressed itself and he shifted into a sea drake. The transformation destroyed the AAV, but somehow, Ben managed to save seven marines and bring down the separatists.
Ben was awarded the navy commendation medal for his actions that day. And, he was being transferred back to Annapolis to join a newly forming unit. That night the Great Shark warned him in a dream not to go to Annapolis for his was to be interrogated and experimented on.
Ben fled and has been hiding in Seattle ever since.
Personality:
[ Spoiler ]
Ben is a loaner. It's not that he dislikes people, it's that he doesn't trust them. He will get along fine with others when needed, but always for his own gain. All his life he has been rejected and left out and he is very distrustful when others show kindness to him.

As long as there is nothing inherent to your metatype that makes a manahazardous environment impossible to survive, I am an equal opportunity employer.
Feel free to make any legal character type on 400 BP or 750 Karma.

I'm thinking of making a Shapeshifter Unarmed Adept (probaby Seal or Shark). What rules do you set for Karma generation considering Karma cost for race and for attributes (x5 I presume?)
Also I would highly recommend starting a new thread for the game itself after recruiting is over to keep things organized.

A few things to clear up with Ben before play starts: Mystical Adept costs [10] BP, you paid [15]. You paid [80] BP for your skills, but spent only [68]. You should have a total of [17] BP left to spend. If you could give me the reference for the Hose spell and the Heightened Concentration Adept Power, as I can't find them, that would be great.

The rules for Karma builds and race/attributes are to not pay anything for your metatype, start out with the bonus stats (for instance the Seal shapeshifter starts with a BOD of 4), then you can spend up to half of your Karma plus twice the BP cost of your metatype on attributes. In this case, a Seal starting at 740 Karma can spend up to 375+(2*70)=505 Karma on stats at character gen. The Seal example would start with BOD 4, and would pay 15 Karma for the first extra point of BOD, then 18, 21, etc. The relevant text is in Runners Companion page 42.
We will start a new thread once the game starts, but I'd rather only have one thread with the blue comments than two threads for rolls and whatnot. More than one thread makes for much confusion.

I'm afraid that "manahazard" is most of the information I have. My friend was fairly closed mouthed about what he was up to in his aquadome, but I know it was magical in some way or another. Thus the generous payment.

Heightened Concentration Cost: 1
The adept is capable of tuning out a single distraction to her task at hand. When using this power, the adept can ignore a single situational negative dice pool modifier of a value up to her Magic attribute. This power requires a Complex Action to activate and maybe be combined with the Adept Centering metamagic.

OTHER ELEMENTAL COMBAT SPELLS
Most Combat spells with elemental effects have the same game char- acteristics; the only difference is the elemental effect (Acid Stream, Flamethrower, and Lightning Bolt, for example, are all the same). To create a spell with a different elemental effect such as Ice or Sand (see pp. 164–165) is very easy—simply use the same spell statistics, apply the rules for the new elemental effect, and rename it. Here are some examples:
Elemental Effect: Water
Single Target Spell Name: Hose

Thanks for the reference. What, might I ask, is the Digital Grimoire? I've never heard of it. If it's published by Catalyst it's fair game, I just need to go get it.
No problem with the typo's, I just thought you'd want the extra BPs if they were there.
As far as the game breaking part with Karma gen, yes it does apply. Just keep in mind that the costs get pretty steep, so you aren't really getting anything for free.

Resume of Spencer Reese
[ Spoiler ]
Name: Spencer Reese
Handle: Fins
Race: Human
Age: 25
Background:
[ Spoiler ]
Spencer is an ex-Combat Swimmer from the UCAS, he was born in a small east coast town and like most people that come from small town he had a choice of living a mundane life working for his father or getting away and joining the military. He chose the latter long before his graduation from high school, and the day after the ceremony he signed up for the Navy. He figured it was his best chance to see some of the world. Spenc was an athletic boy and pretty well liked, but he was quite and withdrawn most of his younger life. He was on the football, baseball, soccer and any other team his dad wanted him to be on, but he never really stood out, he just got by. The only sport that he truly loved was swimming, he was fast in the water and it gave him a great sense of freedom and aloneness. In the recruitment office he learned about the S.E.A.L.s program, but was not really interested at the time so he signed up to serve on a boat. His first year of duty was pretty uneventful, mostly just chasing down some pirates and training exercises.
Shortly into his second year though his boat was badly damaged by a suspected terrorist bomb, and Spenc happened to be in the blast zone. He took a lot of shrapnel to his upper body destroying his arms and eyes, and scaring his chest and some of his face. When he work in the hospital a navy liaison officer was there who told him what happened and gave him some options, based on his service they would give him basic cyber replacements for his eyes and arms enough that would let him fulfill his remaining tour, he could get noncyber prosthetics and take a discharge, or they could give him state of the art cyber and he would transfer to a division of the Navy that could use his cyber and innate talents. He chose the latter, not really caring about the new assignment, he was more afraid of not having the best to replace what he lost. He was given the new cybernetics and spent the next two month in rehab learning to use them. He was also given some specialized cyber that would aid him in his new career.
After rehab he was shipped off to S.E.A.L.s training where he underwent some grueling times, more so then some of the other recruits due to his cyberware. He managed to pass though and was soon assigned to an S.E.A.L. team on the East coast. All of his missions are still classified, but he saw his fair share of action and put his cyberware to good use. Little did he know that the military had basically re-enlisted him when he moved to the S.E.A.L.s so he ended up having to put in a full 4 years there, he reupped for another tour when his first came do, but after a particularly nasty operation where only one other member of his team survived Spenc called it quits and was discharged.
He spent some time back in his home town, but never really felt comfortable or and hated the looks he got because of his cyber, being a small town not to many other people had cyber and none quite as obvious as his two arms. He left the town one day and travelled west were he tried to find work, but soon drifted underground and into a career that might pay handsomely for his talent and skills, shadowrunning.

[ Spoiler ]
Bio:
[ Spoiler ]
Gill McNulty was born in Tampa, Florida. From an early age, he was interested in watercraft, spending much of his youth on the beaches of the Gulf Coast. He was an avid outdoorsman growing up, learning to hunt and fish, as well as other basic survival techniques as a Boy Scout. After graduating from high school, McNulty joined the CAS Navy as a surface vessel crewman. He served on the frigate Shreveport for four years before being transferred to the CAS's special operations directorate. Although himself not a member of the CAS SEALs, his boating expertise and outdoors experience recommended him as a boat-handler for the SEALs. He left SEAL service and returned to the regular Navy soon thereafter, serving as a supply NCO at the Mobile, Alabama naval base. Shortly before Crash 2.0, he was caught by the CAS Navy's Criminal Investigative Division (CID); he had been siphoning off base weapons and equipment and selling them on the black market for extra cash. He was stripped of his rank, dishonorably discharged, and interned at the Alabama State Penitiary; he (and a hundred other inmates) would later escape incarceration when the prison's security systems were wiped as a result of the Crash.
McNulty moved to New Orleans and assumed the false identity of Robert Paulsen. Using his contacts with the Gulf Coast's black market, he took up smuggling. He quickly gained a reputation for speed and punctuality, and was hired on numerous occassions by the various paramilitary groups fighting Aztlan in the Yucatan Penninsula. He has invested most of his earnings into new and better cyberware and weapons for himself, though money is becoming scarce lately as tensions in the Yucatan dropped from boiling to a low simmer. He's been forced to turn his hand to shadowrunning, getting directly involved rather than simply supplying weapons for runners.

CONTACTS (11 BP)
Fixer (Loyalty 1, Connection 2) -- Mr. Green is notorious for his disregard for his runners' lives. He is, however, decent at pulling new talent together into capable teams who invariably leave his service for greener pastures.
CAS Navy Officer (Loyalty 3, Connection 3) -- Captain August Fontenoy was Gill's commander during his time in the SEALs. Although his sharking of military gear ruined his reputation professionally, Fontenoy refused to give up their close friendship.
Yucatan Rebel Leader (Loyalty 1, Connection 2) -- "Smoke Jaguar" is the name of Gill's Yucatan contact. McNulty ran guns to Jaguar and his rebels for several years and while their relationship never made it past "cordial," Jaguar does realize that he owes the smuggler.
Arms Dealer (Loyalty 2, Connection 2) -- Franklin Saint is a Tampa Bay-area arms dealer with low-level connections throughout the eastern Caribbean's black market circles. Saint focuses his deals on weapons and other milspec gear, mostly serving as an intermediary to get guns into the hands of pirates and the Yucatan rebels.
My first-ever rigger. I thought about buying a Lamprey, but you said "pilot" a sub, not "own" a sub. I also looked at the Boston-class SSN, but that was a little out of my price range. Good, bad, ugly?

Hired.
I'm impressed. But your character sheet looks enough like something I would make that I need to to prove you are human and not me. I mean, I spell better, but other than that, it looks so very close. Full disclosure, then hired.
Yep, fully human here, maybe not all there in the head but the rest is all there.
I was on the boards a long time back under a different user name, but I left and when I cam back I couldn't remember the password or email address I signed up with so I started a new account.
I have been playing Shadowrun since the first edition, mainly tabletop but a little online stuff in different forums. I haven't really had time to play the 4th edition rules, but I like what Catalyst has done with the rules and I am anxious to start playing again.
Heh, sorry about the spelling, I did the sheet on Google Docs and it didn't catch some of the spelling/grammer errors. I will go back and fix up the sheet.

QUOTE (Red_Cap @ Jul 11 2010, 03:25 AM)
Name: Gill McNulty
Race: Human
Age: 29
Hometown: Tampa, Florida, CAS
[ Spoiler ]
Bio:

I've hired three of you so far, and since you are all going to be spending time in close quarters soon, I thought it would be good of me to introduce the three of you. I've taken the liberty of posting a snip out of your Shadowlinkin profiles. I've embedded information on each of your commlink nodes in the profiles so you can get in touch of each other if you need to.
You three are professionals, so I trust that after you get to know each other, you can tell me if you need more team members.

Would take your job offer. Have underwater experience.
Here's my resume:
Kensei, Combat Adept and Melee Specialist
Race: Shapeshifter (Tiger)
Age: 14
Base of Operations: The Caribbean (Dominica)
Description:
[ Spoiler ]
Kensei appears as a japanese man of about 20 years. He stands over 2 meters tall, with a strong and athletic build. He has sharply defined facial features, high cheekbones and a strong jawline. His eyes show the golden color and slit pupils of a cat and his short hair is a striped pattern of silver and black.
He doesn't pay much attention to his clothes as he does not understand the human fixation on appearance. Normally he's wearing either normal-looking clothes like boots, jeans, a simple white shirt and a leather jacket or traditional japanese garments, mostly kimonos in black, white and red.
His most prized possession is a magical katana he retained from his days as an assassin. The beautiful dark sword is is made of black steel and engraved with japanese kanji and images of running tigers. The grip is made of ebony and has a tassel in silver and black. It is called "The Meitou Shuusui". It roughly means: Named Blade: Clear Autumn Water in japanese. He also owns a wakizashi with the same look. He is almost never seen without this daisho, as the combination of katana and wakizashi is called in japanese.
In his true form, Kensei is an enormous siberian tiger with silver fur striped in black.
Unusal for a shapeshifter, Kensei actually prefers his human form to his animal form when in combat.
Background Summary
[ Spoiler ]
Kensei doesn't know what happened before he awakend. The first thing he remembers is being in a training facility in Japan. Members of a japanese organisation of assassins for hire, called the Shinigami, had found him, recognized his talent and taken him in, realizing that he was naive and formable.
They trained the fledgling shapeshifter for combat and assassination, honing his natural magical ability. Kensei didn't know anything about the world and humans so he did as he was told and thought his situation was normal.
The organisation used him for countless brute force assassinations. Kensai was the guy they sent when they wanted to send a message.
After many years, the young shapeshifter gained freedom when the organisation was eradicated by the japanese military. Not knowing what to do with himself and having no talents besides killing, Kensei inevitably drifted into the shadows.
He still works mainly as an assassin. But now he chooses his targets. He's made it his mission to eradicate those who exploit the weak and take their freedom away. If he get's paid for it, all the better.
He feels he has to do this to make up for the innocents he killed on the Shinigamis' orders. He didn't know better back then but he still feels guilt about it.
He is currently located in the caribbean.
Unknown to him, some members of the Shinigami have survived the organisation's destruction. They put a bounty on Kensei's head, since in their eyes he betrayed them.

Been thinking the team might benefit if I switch to the free spirit. (There's already a shapeshifter.) I'll have to come up with a fairly interesting background. What do you think? Sea Drake or Free Spirit?
(FYI - If free spirit, I took the Power Pact and plan on trading the use of Regeneration for Karma -For 1 karma/24 hrs you, too can regenerate. Might be useful for the mundanes...)

I thought I would let you know that I will be traveling for the next few days, so the game proper won't start until probably Thursday. I will likely have partial internet access, so I may be sending players individual messages from Simon, and working to get players into the same physical location. Don't worry about making your characters backgrounds mesh, as I like the style of Shadowrun pick-up-group that posting a job on the Shadowlands leads to. Simon will take care of most transportation issues, which includes dive equipment for those that need it.
I also want to thank you all for playing and let you know how excited I am to get such a talented group of runners, as evidenced by the care you all put into crafting your characters. This should be wicked fun.

Something to keep you motivated while I'm away. Any player that posts exactly three tropes to describe their character will be awarded 5 Karma. You can get an additional 2 Karma for a short vignette. Whatever you have posted when we start is what we will go with, so you have a few days to pick.
Here is a link to tvtropes.org cyber punk trope. I'm sure you can go from there.

Gill McNulty never really wanted anything special from life -- a few bucks in the bank account, a Southern belle by his side, maybe some rugrats to hand his gun collection off to when the farm came up for sale. It's hard making a life in the Confederation, especially with all those damn inbred yokels from Alabama and Ole Miss running things in Atlanta like it was the War Between the States, Take Two. (Unfortunate Implication) The Navy was supposed to be a means to an end, but that dried up his dreams real quick. He was just trying to set aside a little extra cash for a retirement home in Tampa. It's not like he was selling tanks -- the Navy wasn't going to miss a couple of assault rifles here or there and nobody actually used them anyway. I mean, the Yucataners needed those to fight a common enemy, the Azzies! Everyone wins, right? (War for Fun and Profit) And now he's stuck in a black market reality where everyone's your boss and no one's your friend. Just to make a living, he had to fill himself with more headware than is probably healthy. It had taken him two days to figure out how to shut off the damn commlink that they installed in his skull; its hard to get used to waking up to an alarm clock that you can't snooze because its behind your eyeballs. (Unusual User Interface)

Ooooh I love tvtropes.org
I'm so on this. I will also write a vignette as soon as I find the time.
Here are 3 tropes describing Kensei:
-Anti Hero - more exactly a Type III: Good Is Not Nice Anti-Hero. His past has taught Kensei one thing over all. Pay evil unto evil. Fight fire with fire. Kill the killers. You can't stop the bad guys by being nice. Kensei can be a pretty mean guy. But only to bad people.
-Hitman With A Heart - He's an assassin but he only kills to rid the world of bad people.
-Berserk Button - He has more than one. Don't prey on the helpless. Don't mistreat animals. Don't take someone's freedom away. Cause you wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Other fitting tropes are (If you don't want more then 3 just ignore them but I was on a roll):
-Lightning Bruiser (How is this muscle-bound 2 meter tall guy so damn fast?)
-The Berserker (Once a fight starts the predatory animal instincts take over and it's hard for him to stop)
-Hero With An F In Good (He just can't live as a regular nice human that follows the rules. He wants to do good but his conviction that some people need to cull the black sheeps from the flock keeps him from being a Knight In Shining Armor)
-Dark Is Not Evil (Looking like an enormous feral tiger doesn't make him evil)
Karoline

B Bandit's tropes (Gezz it took me forever to figure out how to find any tropes for -characters-)
-Badass Bookworm: Better able to defend herself than you might expect, and certainly enters ridiculous levels on the matrix.
-The Smart Guy (Gal): Lowest Mental stat is a 5, highest is double digits.
-Science Hero: What can I say, B Bandit is a Technomancer, tech/science is her life.
Not familiar with the site or how to find tropes or anything, so picked a few of the ones I could actually find and applied fairly well. I'm sure there are others that describe her better, but I don't know what they are.
Edit: After having spent basically the entire day on this horridly addictive site, I've adjusted to the following three tropes that better define B Bandit.
-Disability Superpower: We'll see how long it takes you to figure out the disability
-Technical Pacifist: She doesn't want to kill anyone, and if possible not even hurt anyone, but if she really needs to, she will plant your ass on the ground so hard you'll stay there for a few hours. Which brings me to...
-Badass Bookworm: Just don't tick her off, and she won't have to put you on the ground.

Ghostmaker

The Quiet One - Spencer is the typical quiet one, he usually only speaks when asked a question or if he feels he has something useful to contribute.
Hit And Run Tactics - Spencer's training emphasized hitting the target and moving, if you stay in one spot to long the enemy will pinpoint your location and bring the fire down on your head.
The Alcoholic - Spencer started drinking soon after his last op when almost his entire team was wiped out, he doesn't talk about it and instead drinks to suppress the memories. He is only a mild drinker at this point, usually only late at night or when isolated for a period of time, but it could and is steadily worsening.
Hmmm, this is kind of fun here are a couple more that I think might fit for Spenc
Cybernetics Eat Your Soul - The terrorist act took away a lot of Spencer's meat and the Navy replaced it with metal. It bothers Spenc sometimes, maybe another reason he drink, and he struggles to maintain his human side and fears having to get more cyber.
Anti Hero - Spencer does what he does for money and it is pretty much all he knows how to do, he doesn't really want to be a hero and use whatever means necessary to get the op done.

Spencer Reese stood at the end of pier looking out over the ocean, one cybernetic hand flexing involuntarily, the other holding a small bottle of synthahol. He stared out at the gentle waves as the rolled towards the shore, calm, constant and unstoppable. It had been a long time since he had been fully submerged under the waves, breathing in the water through the cyber gills and cutting through it with the fins implanted in his hands and feet. He missed it, but he didn’t want it, not like he use to, not since that night when four of his teammates and friends didn't come back from that water. He took another pull from the bottle just as his commlink beep with a new message. He glanced at it and snorted, so he got the job. The money was good, details light, and it was underwater, his realm, it was almost subconsciously that he answered the posting, and now it looked like he had some prepping to do.
He raised the bottle in salute, "Ready to Lead, Ready to Follow, Never Quit", he took one last pull, then poured the rest into the sea. He tossed the bottle into a can near him, turned his back on the waves, and walked down the pier to get a cab home.

Humans are a mystery. They are capable of impressive feats. When they focus their energy on good, they can accomplish remarkable things. But when they turn their potential to evil, the horrors they produce are frightening.
The rain is pouring down, heavy drops falling from the black sky. A thick greasy mist is spreading through the alleys of Roseau that form the maze below me. I'm sitting on the slippery roof of a warehouse, waiting, watching. Then, I see his car stop in front of the gate. A black sedan, how chliche. A bodyguard opens the door for him, then he gets out of the vehicle. Impeccably dressed like always. Even in this dump. Ten minutes ago he was with his family, singing his children to sleep, kissing his wife. Now he's at the harbor preparing to inspect a new "delivery". That's what they call it. Girls, mostly from Atzlan and Cuba, shipped here against their will. Destined to be sextoys for paying customers. Not tonight.
He has almost reached the door of the warehouse when I strike. A headshot from the silenced FN-HAR takes out the gorilla. But for him that's to good. He needs to see me, to fear me, regret what he's done.
I jump, drawing my blade while in the air. Landing in front of him, a beautiful silver arc cut's through the darkness as well as his vocal cords. He's trying to scream, call for help, but there's nothing coming out of his throat except a wet gurgling sound. I pull up my mask, show him my face. "When you are in hell, tell them you're not the last to come." I bring down the sword, cut of his head, flick off the blood on the blade.
Humans are a mystery. They have many paths to choose from. And for those that choose wrong my blade will be the only thing waiting at the end.

It's a calm night. A giant feudal Japanese style fortress stands in front of the woman who looks like she belongs in an old west style action flick, a duster mostly covering her form, a black duster hat drawn low to hide her face from most angles. Imposing looking Samurai line the walls of the fortress, patrolling and looking outside for intruders.
"Shigoto o eru tame ni suru koto ga dekimasu."
With that she fades out of site a moment, only to reappear as a shadowy shape, hard to make out in the background darkness. A second similar shape appears next to her, it seems to nod, and in response the first shape rushes towards the walls. Without slowing down in the slightest, the shape begins running up the wall at high speed, cresting the top of the rampart just as two samurai pass each other, a temporary blind spot behind their backs. Using the edge of the rampart for footing, the figure launches itself forward, and disappears into the shadows beneath the wall, now safely on the inside with the guarding samurai none the wiser.
Now safely inside, the shadowy figure solidifies, but instead of looking like the woman from before, it is instead now a simple peasant carrying a basket of rice on her back. She begins to walk further into the fortress, soon passing other entirely identical peasants carrying similar baskets, moving from building to building. One building though seems to have no one entering or leaving it, and so the peasant makes for that building.
The doors open easily for her, but as soon as she steps foot inside a loud crack of thunder can be heard from outside, the skies having instantly gone from clear and pristine to being laden with heavy storm clouds, all roiling with lightning. The inside of the building meanwhile seemed very unimpressive except for a golden dragon statue, and two ninjas that seemed to step out of the shadows.
"Should have known a lord account would have been a better idea." The peasant complains to herself "Time to drop the act." At her words, her form shifts back to the wild west looking woman from before, except that this time in each hand she holds a revolver with an overlong barrel. Without further comment she raises the pistols, firing both at the same time, one at each ninja. Both Ninja catch the bullet fired at them and quickly fling it back with deadly power behind the throw.
The wild west woman drops a gun, which dissolves into nothingness before it hits the ground to grab the edge of her duster, drawing it up to shield herself from the bullets, which impact harmlessly into the leather. "Inshō-tekina."
As the ninja begin to charge, drawing their swords in the process, the shadowy figure from earlier appears next to the golden statue, passing a hand over it, causing it to disappear. "Zan'nen Shōnen-tachi." Dropping her duster, she reveals her other hand, which instead of wielding the pistol it had been a moment ago, is now holding a double barreled shotgun with bores that look as though they belong on small cannons. With a click of the trigger two slugs fly out, catching each ninja firmly in the chest, sending them flying back, crashing through the walls of the small building.
By the time anyone else arrives, all that remains in the building is a black duster hat, right where the golden statue was.

Are we going to have a more long term OOC thread at all? I figure it'll take time for everyone to get to the meet and such and would like to register a couple sprites while there is some free time. I'm sure the mages would like to do the same for spirits. I'll do a few rolls in a bit, need to restart my computer.

I would like to keep the OOC in the same thread as the IC, just using the color="blue" tag to differentiate it. If people would prefer the format of a separate thread, I'm more than happy to start one.

You are free to post in the meeting thread. Let me know where your base of operations is so Simon can come up with overly complicated travel plans for you.

I'll get me sheet up on Monday if that's ok...? I stuck up an initial post in the IC thread anyway.
