Full Version: EPIC Chronology Thread!
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
TKDNinjaInBlack
So, I've been away from the DS forums for a time and away from SR for just about as long. I come back and I don't see a lot of familiar names, but I hope some of you old and classic SR players will contribute to help put things right with the following list.

Here is a list of every (American) Shadowrun release that I can figure out through my meager resources. From my own research, I've got them correctly ordered down to the editions and years they were released. But, I would like to know which supplements, adventures, location books and core books came out in what order during those years. I'm not too concerned with where they fit in the canon chronology, only order of publication release. Some mistakes are blatantly obvious, such as all of the novels lumped at the end of the years. I know that they didn't just publish them all at the end of each year, but as of now, they are kind of ordered by what type of book they are because I have no idea what came out first.

Those damn IDs and SKUs that they are marked with aren't reliable for determining order of release, so don't try to order them with those either. This is going to require good old-fashioned knowledge and analysis to compile this list properly. Some changes that are needed are also obvious, because I know the content of Super Tuesday comes before the Big D's assassination, which is covered in Portfolio.

Some releases are listed with two years. This is because when you look up the copyright and publication info, it gives 2 different dates. On a lot of these, the back cover of the book will give a later year of publication than on the information page. Sometimes, I have two years listed for the years that the event was running, kind of like the Missions campaigns, which spanned months across multiple years.

My goal is to get everything in order so I can take a group of players through an epic campaign of released books, just trudging through the game as it was created. We're making 1st edition characters right now, and will start with the First Run in the 1st edition core book. But from there, I need to know what order the books and supplements come out so I can drag them through the world as it was created by the makers. Once we get started, I'll keep a campaign report so everyone can reminisce about old shared adventures long since played. But first, the list as it stands now:

**Note** The dashes and question marks are notion for which books I have and which ones I still need to pick up. Three dashes (---) means I have the book in its entirety and can reference the years of publication. The question marks (???) mean that I don't own a copy of that book, so I can't look up that date and know for sure if it even belongs in that year bracket. Feel free to correct me as those are just educated guesses based on the publication dates of other items with close or similar item numbers.

**Secondary Note** The 4th edition List should be pristine, as I looked up all of the street dates on the official SR4 website just before they changed it and got rid of all of their back logs of news updates. Also, I know the novels have no relevance to me running a campaign, but they are thrown in for my own enjoyment so I can read them when I come to them.

Wish I could be more help tho :/

Well, since I received no help at all, here's the best re-organizing I can do without input from knowledgeable individuals. Feel free to call me out if you see mistakes, because most of this is just guess-work and intuition while trying to follow patterns that I've noticed with the release of 3rd and 4th edition books (where core supplements are offset with adventures or other types of books and what-not).

Maybe that other list, sorted by in-context date, can be useful to you.
TKDNinjaInBlack
Thank you, that list is helpful, but isn't quite what I'm looking for.

I am trying to find a chronological order of publication release, not necessarily chronological game time. Reason being, I believe things should be experienced in the order they are given to the audience as certain spoilers will be given away among other things. Here's four reasons why I like to try to trek through timelines in publication order as opposed to chronological order:

Giving away plot twists:
In the Resident Evil games timeline, RE0 comes before RE1. In RE0, the game nonchalantly depicts Wesker and Birkin working together to lead their team to slaughter and gives away their true natures, however there is a big reveal in RE1 that Wesker is your betrayer. This climax is ruined by playing in order of timeline instead of release, as since RE0 came out later, everyone knows the twist and it's not treated with any kind of due respect.

Character portrayal:
It's interesting to see how characters are portrayed when they are First introduced later in their historical timelines during first releases, and how they can be altered for their historical "premiers" that happen in later written "prequel" stories. In the Chronicles of Narnia, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" is written first, but isn't the first in chronology of the series. Aslan's portrayal is epic and given and it's a big deal. However, in the earliest book in the chronology, written later, readers know who Aslan is, and when he makes his first appearance in the realm, it's ho-hum and boring. Lame.

Character/Plot Retcon:
Sometimes characters are introduced in a publication (sometimes mentioned in passing later in the story timeline, but in early publication releases), and then detailed completely differently in a newer published story that takes place earlier in the timeline. A lot of minor characters get this treatment, with their occupations and historical accounts changing all the time. In the Star Wars timeline, Naga Sadow was mentioned as an old Sith Sorceror, and then later in the comic detailing his earlier flight from Sith Space to Yavin IV, depicted as a Lord and important figure. Minor shit, but still very interesting to someone with a good attention to detail.

Homage:
Some homages are lost on the audience because of their lack of association with the earlier works (occurring later in a timeline) when they experience them chronologically. All of the shots that wrap up Star Wars Episode III really hold no relevance if one experiences the series in chronological order, but mean everything to one who is familiar with the original trilogy.

That's why I stand by my theory that one should watch/experience media in the order it is released rather than the order it appears in a chronology. We as people are smart enough to make the connections and understand where it fits and how it interacts with other material that relates to it even when it's assembled piecemeal.

All that being said, does anyone actually know the order of release Shadowrun books? Does anyone know a way to find out?

All that being said, does anyone actually know the order of release Shadowrun books? Does anyone know a way to find out?

In general, ISBN is a good indicator of intended release date.
MJBurrage
The best list would be a sortable table with columns for Copyright, ISBN, and in game date.
TKDNinjaInBlack
Thanks for the suggestion on the ISBN. I'm reading how to understand the codes right now, and will see if that alters the list at all.

Also, the idea on having separate lists in a table in order to differentiate publication, copyright, and game time would be awesome. I don't know If I'll be the one to do it, but it would be awesome.

Can I ask where can you pick up these books and adventures as I'm new to shadowrun, only knowing shadowrun 4 but I'm wanting to do something similar with my group. However I lack the previous editions settings and adventures. Did you have these "lying around" or did you buy them recently? If you did buy them, where did you look/purchase them?

P.S. Cheers for the list, it's helped a great deal chronologically smile.gif
TKDNinjaInBlack
I filled out the majority of my list by buying auction lots at my local game shop's quarterly auctions. If I saw several books or more in a lot, I just bid for the lot. That's a good way to end up with a bunch of them super quick, but it's also a good way to end up with a lot of copies and extras (which eventually, I'll end up dumping several lots down on the auction and maybe earning back some of what I paid for the copies).

Ebay and Amazon are a good way to fill in individual books (or again, auction lots on EBay), but it can get expensive, as everyone's asking prices are too high. I try to avoid this, but as I'm left filling in only little bits that I've got left, it's inefficient to keep buying auction lots for only a book or two, and this method is taking over for efficiency's sake.
