There is a limited number of smileys allowed per post? Well, obviously there is. Is having a lot really a problem?

Yep. There's a limit, and you found it. FWIW, it's intentional and not a bug.

Yeah, I remember a guy from years back who loved to use tons and tons of smiles in his posts. He annoyed the hell out of everyone. I can't seem to remember his name anymore, but the number of flame wars that were started over him was enormous.
