Full Version: Shadowrun Returns 2nd City?

Oh man, I don't know what to pick.

I'd like to do something more exotic like Hong Kong or Neo Tokyo.

But at the same time, that Chicago story hook would be great to see. Bug City rising would be one of the coolest things ever.

Denver is so iconic, and lots of fun border hopping.

Exploring the ruins of new New York.

Ah...I don't know...so many possibilities.

I'm going to pick Neo Tokyo right now, just because I want a setting that's really different and even be really difficult to pull off.
raggedhalo
London, Denver or Chicago (in that order) would be my choices!

Who wants to place bets that the 2nd City will end up being Hong Kong? wink.gif

Do you think that this poll represents a true cross-section of the SR community or just a subset?

2nd city?

I thought they promised to add a 3rd city at 1.5mil?

Nope.

Or at least, I've never seen that mentioned.
_Pax._
Never saw that mentioned, either.

Wishful thinking, Gerzel?

London and the Tir Played central roles in my old 1st and 2nd Edition games. I have to go with one of those for ole times sake.

Berlin should really be the second city! smile.gif

And here's why:

1. [Probably most important point:] The game will be set in the 2050s -> the lore for Berlin in this time period is simply AMAZING and would offer such a huuuge potential for a great setting and atmosphere! The city being taken over by anarchists -> the German government taking it back in 2055 and the anarchists being pushed back to eastern Berlin, then that part of the city walled off! (source: http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Berlin). There are tons of ways to use that kind of setting for a great, deep story and mission design. Also, the (real life) historical parallels of a "deadly wall" in Berlin make it even more interesting.

2. It would be lame to have the second city in the US as well! Plus: a more international feel will attract more potential buyers! With Berlin being at the very center and the heart of Europe you could better attract chummers (and soon-to-be-chummers) from this vast market. Also, as some other fellow SR pledger phrased it earlier, the changes in SR were a world-wide phenomenon and so far SR has concentrated way too much on the US! This would be THE time to give the whole thing a more international flair (during it's great revival, funded by us - here and now cool.gif ). Also, the language support is already at a very good spot for doing well in Europe.

3. In my eyes, Tokyo and Berlin are by far the best (and most interesting) options for the second city (hooray Japan, really love it!). But: with Tokyo as the second city we would have the huge problem of racism issues in the lore of SR! You would basically have to make your runs with human only runners... and seriously, who wants that? (Trolls ftw ^^). Would take away quite a bit of the SR-flair and fun.

4. The VERY strong and loving SR community in Germany. They helped keeping the thing alive and there's still an enormous(!) support for the PnP game there! Also they would simply blow a fuse if the second city was set there wink.gif

5. Many more reasons, but this is way too long already! Sorry bout' that!! ;D

Love the project, love you supporters (no matter what city will win ;-*), keep on running! smile.gif

For the ultimate in brutality, where a meta-human life is worth no more than a bag of rice, and the division between the haves and have nots best portrays the setting of a dystopian future… there is only one choice: LAGOS!!!
This is today: "Africans don't have wars, they have genocides".
Let's face it, it's only going to be worse in Shadowrun 2050... way worse!

So New Orleans if it's states side otherwise I'd love something overseas something in Europe or Egypt perhaps?

New Orleans
London
Cairo

Edit: Berlin fits my overseas theory smile.gif

My first vote goes to Berlin.

Other than that, I'd LOVE to see Moscow in SR.

Having the second city outside of North America gives the game a global scope, which I think really sells the notion of "this is what the world has become." The arguments for London and Berlin on the basis of their rich 2050s lore has merit, but I think it would be more interesting to go with Hong Kong. The extensive write-up in Runner Havens got my interest and certainly sold me on the notion that Hong Kong is a rich and varied locale for runners. It has lots of factions at play in a small space, a good variety of environments (the heights of luxury to the slums to Macao), and it also has an enough of a unique culture and flavour to set it apart from Seattle while still bringing into play a lot of the Shadowrun elements (corporations, crime syndicates, smugglers, magical environments, etc). The 2050s lore isn't as rich for Hong Kong as other cities, but I think that's a good opportunity to fit in whole new stories within the old setting. The setting of Hong Kong is already well built, but the history remains fairly open. You'd have Seattle to provide the space to revisit a rich set of established characters and events, but then you'd also have Hong Kong without the constraints of having all those detailed characters and events to work around.
Caadium
Just to add my nuyen.gif2, in no particular order I've got 3 I'd like:

Berlin, to get a different feel, support all the German fans, and because the old Berlin book was cool.

Denver, because the politics instead of just corp is a nice.

Chicago, because it sets up a Bug City expansion.
Wounded Ronin
Considering the spirit of the 80s, the 2nd city should probably be some far east location.

HOWEVER, what I actually want to see, in terms of something that could be interesting and which maybe hasn't been done before, would be New Orleans.
SirFozzie
Definitely casting my vote for Denver.. so much intrigue and stuff going on (even back in the 2050's)
Shinobi Killfist
I kind of want San Francisco. IIRC correctly it is connected to Seattle via a underground bullet train. That would be a snazzy way to connect the cities.
The Dragon Girl
Chicago, LA, and Tir Na Nog get my love <3

I just figured it's been neglected so hard in canon that no one would really want to run here. I think we're mentioned in exactly 3 sourcebooks, and Quebec City was the one that got all the love.

If we're going to go for Canadian cities, I vote for the great capital of the Algonkian-Manitou Council: Saskatoon. It's tempting just for the collective "WTF?" it would unleash.

I'm sure all three residents of Saskatoon and the dog are happy you suggested that. wink.gif

Why not Vancouver? No, too much like Seattle.

Winnipeg, it's a nice border town now, and already has Shadowrun Barrens-Like areas IRL?
Daishi
That's offensive. There's more than one dog.

Vancouver would at least be easy to do. Just take the Seattle setting and add a couple filters for names and randomly inserting "eh" into dialogue. (Actually that would be an amusing easter egg.)

I think Thunder Bay is marginally more established as the major border town along that line, but neither Thunder Bay or Winnipeg seem nearly as properly ridiculous to me as Saskatoon.
CanRay
Oh, you got a new dog recently? nyahnyah.gif

Zzyzx is a...location in the desert of California that has zero residents. Last I knew, it was effectively abandoned, as there was 1 business in the area (a spa) that got shut down for having the improper building permits. So now it exists as a freeway exit and nothing more.

I don't expect that by 2050 that would change much.
Demonseed Elite
Okay, I give up and toss in my totally biased vote for Hong Kong. wink.gif

It's true that in the original 2050s setting there's almost no material on Hong Kong. Still, it was an interesting city in the 2050s, before the Big D blessed Wuxing with the attention of the West.

Been gone for a week. A lotta updates to do! I separated the list into 3 tiers for organizational purposes.

Just for that, I vote for Toronto!

And it is a city in Shadowrun! With entertainment and finance sections that outstrip most of the suggestions here.

And there is nothing to compare with Jilly's. A place to meet Mr. Johnson sans pareil.

From the first review of Jilly's:

QUOTE
There are men out there that have searched for the illusive elephant graveyard to behold its ivory riches.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have found the elephant graveyard of the adult entertainment world. No longer do the ivory riches flow from these dancers as poachers have long since been to their tusks. This is the place where the once majestic beasts go off alone to finish the final moments of their life. Their teeth are missing and worn down from years of grinding and their bodies show the wear of their children.

What else can I say. It's sad when you go there for your buddy's birthday and end up trying to find the ugliest dancer for him instead of the hottest because that's what is there for the pickings.

I must now throw in another vote for Montreal; our strippers are hotter and our Bikers meaner silly.gif
pbangarth
Jilly's is not the establishment of choice for strippers, as Dr. Rockso quickly found. It is, though, an excellent character piece for a down-and out campaign. And much of the entertainment comes from Québec anyway. Imported by those very bikers.

If not for Toronto, though, I too would vote for Montreal.
CanRay
Well, that's what happens when you do Novacoke. Like, a LOT of Novacoke!

Oh, that nosebleed? He just fell down. wink.gif
