Full Version: I need a little help...

Guys, I could use a bit of help to flesh out a detail for a character.

In short, I need a believable 15pts. Enemy for the LA setting. Character is a gambler adept inspired by the Marvel Gambit character. Obvious options would be either the Triad or the Mafia. However, both are involved in the gambling scene, and I'd prefer to be able to have the character make use of the gambling scene of both of these parties. Horizon would be another obvious alternative, but A) I can come up with no good reason for having them as an Enemy, and B) they are frankly rather beyond the scope of the Enemy quality IMO. If a AAA corp wants you dead you are dead.

I've considdered the Yakuza, but from what I can gather, they don't operate in LA, having left the place to the Triads. Could that credibly work, however? Assuming that the Yakuza will only be working indirectly?

Anyone with other ideas for said enemy quality, which would fit with LA and a Gambler character?

Moar Info?
If he is like Remy a Thief, he can have, basically, just about anybody as an enemy, because he could have stolen something quite dear to them from them . .
A small time Politician for example, or some Gang-Boss or something like that.
Mafia would work on the angle of him having "dishonored" the sister of one of the made men, or the Daughter of a Don, ala the Assassins Guild.
A Mage whom he once worked for, and then you have Mr.Sinister.
Or a group he once worked for/with and betrayed. Yes, he is quite famous for that.

Is he a Dandelion Eater?
Humanis, presto.

If he is out and open about being awakened, yes, there are also racists who hate magicks.
Religious zealots and the such for example. Maybe somebody who thinks if he ate his Heart he would gain his Powers.

i just noticed, i know way too much about these characters <.<

A wealthy/powerful guy he gambled with.
The stakes went higher and higher and the player lost a big pile of money to him.Instead of money the PC gave him a deed of a valuable track of land/building/whatever he won in a previous gamble on the same day.
Now guess which property got trashed in the big quake just hours after he left or otherwise turned out worthless?

This guy has enough money/power for a 15pt enemy, but no pull in the gambling scene. And the organization which hosted the event doesn't see any foul play. The debt was paid after all and what happens away from the table is not their problem.

I'd second Ixal's suggestion of a member of "high society" that this person gambled with (or against). It could actually be someone affiliated with Horizon without too much trouble, as long as you lean on the difference between "affiliated with" and "acts on behalf of". Kit McClain, one of the simstars from the LA fluff material, is on contract to Horizon (I think) - but he's not likely to be pulling out Gary Cline levels of influence over them, he's just another megacorp employee, albeit a very recognisable and well-paid one.

Here's another thought: PCC politician. Pueblo runs a city council and has its own governor in LA (even if Horizon actually runs the show), and it's an open secret there that all manner of corporate and political gamble inside private casinos that the Mafia runs. Might be a nice way to get your gambler into the scene without having him leashed by one of the major syndicates, especially if his adept abilities make him smooth enough to sweet-talk his way through the door. (Maybe the politician was the one that got him an invite in the first place, and there was a "misunderstanding" over whether the winnings would be split to return the favour?)

Thanks for the suggestions people.

Ixal. I really do like your idea.

Stahlseele. You asked for more info. The guy is a Human based on a 750BP build. He's designed to be mainly a throwing expert B&E guy with a secondary Face role. The gambling stuff is mainly for fluff purposes.
He's got Charisma 6, 11 contacts, and Influence Group 3. Two "ranks" of Martial Arts (Savate) training with four Maneuvers and likes to use a staff. He specialises in throwing weapons, and will do 9P with a playing card or similar improvised item (10P with a throwing knife). Infiltration, Palming, & Hardware 4 and Lockpicking 1 (need to raise that one during the game). Agility 9. All the standard B&E gear. For the fun of it I added Monofilament Garrotte at Rating 2. I might add that I also threw in Wanted (I figured the Enemy might have thrown a bounty on him or something) and Criminal SIN.

So he's basically Gambit...

Take the United Canadian-American States as his Enemy. nyahnyah.gif He's Wanted, but not for anything superheinously legal that they can justify sending an assassination squad after him, and probably for something which isn't even a crime in CalFree, so CalFree won't extradite. Maybe he deflowered a Senator's daughter/son who was underage in the UCAS - but he did it when s/he was on vacation in CalFree where s/he was not underage, so as far as CalFree's concerned, no crime was committed, but the UCAS feels differently. So they occasionally hire a bounty hunter to try and extraordinarily rend him back into their custody.
