So, I finished Shadowrun Returns. I enjoyed it. As someone who had been involved in SR since 2nd edition I certainly felt thrilled to experience storytelling in the style of the original creators. I always wondered what their gaming style was like and maybe now I know a little bit. Definitely it was a bit different than my personal style but I appreciated the differences. I couldn't help but feel as though I detected a theme about pursuing creative and fulfilling works as a freelancer versus trying to shoot for a steady job somewhere in the background.
A certain immortal elf needed higher combat stats, in my opinion.
I had a great time on the whole!
So, where are all the fan made missions??

Much higher, really. I've heard lots of complaints that he was useless in the final battle. I didn't find him to be totally useless, but then, I brought along second-string Runners Lufta and Jotojunn because (a) Coyote wouldn't come, and (b) they were with me for the first UB run and I figured they had a stake in seeing this through.

Probably struggling against the very limited available tileset. It's not really like NWN, which was a full AAA Bioware title, and you had far more than enough editor options/stamps to make many and varied environments. They made pretty much exactly the art assets as they needed to release the Dead Man's Switch campaign, which are also exactly the art assets you have to go with. So you're basically limited to run-down medical facilities, graveyards, Tourist Town, the Seamstresses' Union, the seedier part of Downtown, Telestrian Enterprises, Mr. Telestrian's mansion, an FAA warehouse on the docks, rooftop cesspools, apartments, UB chapterhouses and bug hives.
You can't even make a good Stuffer Shack with the art assets included.

Nobody has yet made an "inside of a Stuffer Shack" tileset that I am aware of. Have they?

Yes, or I probably wouldn't have had as much fun playing Food Fight as I did.
I mean, it's not a breathtaking marvel of gaming engineering or anything, but it had counters, and shelves full of stuff, and a back room for storage with a bunch of boxes lying around, and stuff.

Haha, yeah! He was the FIRST to die, when I began that last part...
On the second attempt, I was a lot more careful...

I enjoyed my play through as an orc decker/gunner, but I'm not sure I'll want to replay the campaign that came with the game. It's a bit too linear, but worth playing though once.

So, I replayed the campaign as a veteran Runner, gave myself 420 Karma to start and 20,000 nuyen...
It was fun, yep, quite a lot of fun. However, some of the flaws became apparent, like, at the end. You only really have the option to make James Telestrian really ice-cold and ask him for money, or to hitch your wagon to his train and become his VP of Security.
I wish I could've said "You know what I want, Mr. Telestrian? I want a bankroll and more AEGIS launchers once you've got them up and running. There's more hives out there, and someone has to go and do something about them. I aim to be that person."

Fan-made missions (or UGC as they call them) are slowly appearing. It takes time to make a solid mission.
ShadowDragon8685

One thing about the ending that disappoints me?
Mr. Telestrian asks you what you would like from him. You can ask for (a) the VP of Security job, (b) Officer McClusky's badge, or © nuyen, real nuyen.
If you ask for (b), he grants it to you, and then says that since it was such a minor boon, he feels generous and will grant another. You can only then ask for (a) and ©. The problem is that © makes him coldly tell his Jeeves to give you money and then terminate all relationship between the two of you, whilst (a) hitches your wagon to his.
I wish there was an option to tell him "You know what I'd like, Mr. Telestrian? I want a plane ticket to Portland, 25,000
bankroll, and four more AEGIS launchers as soon as you can have them ready. There's more hives out there, the work isn't done."

I pretty much figured that's what taking the VP gig was gonna entail. In my head-canon, you're on a jet a few hours later, troubleshooting for the company.
And it's awesome.

Yeah, but it does kind of preclude you from taking on other jobs as a free 'Runner.

My character was an elf, so that wasn't a problem for her. But him being a jerkface was. Nice guy to have as an ally/bankroll/supplier when you're storming insect hives, but I sure don't wanna hitch my wagon to him.

I'm working with the editor to put together a SR-Returns version of DNA/DOA. It will take a while, but its a project. I was also thinking of Physical, the first Harlequin adventure would be fun for this format

I agree with the editor - I was looking for a road-map and just suddenly started tiling - BIG difference from the NWN fun (That one was surprisingly easy)
Regarding the run, yeah - I tried to start it as a dwarf splattermage, but ended up taking a lot more levels of decker and cyber.
Trying it again as an elf, mostly as a a supposed support mage, but have slid riiiight over to a magic samuari....
Maybe I should try taking on an experienced Troll smashing machine, and see what close-combat looks like when it's not Harli getting his ass handed to him by the bugs.
I loved some of the details though - but the Nerps thing was a little forced. But it was awesome seeing Maury's Meat Market (From, hell, was it the old Seattle sourcebook?)
Hopefully, someone smarter than I is going to tile up and leave some spaces over for Matchsticks and Dantes. Frankly, I'm really excited at the thought of trying to reproduce Jake's run (from the SNES SR game) with Coyote (the ghouls would be awesome-easy as the graveyard is really familiar to anyone farming karma:))
Still, I thought it was actually good fun - I just really hope that they manage to make it multiplayer. That'd be awesome.

PS: It was an absolute thrill to see Red Seven Security Concepts as a backer in the credits: )

It's pretty bone simple, and really easy to figure out once you have the basics down. The hardest part for me has honestly been figuring out which tiles I like best, because the browser icons are so small.
The thing that amazes me the most about it is how LITTLE of the game's possibilities they used, with regards to conversation trees and story-length triggers.

You can set the browser icons to a bigger size.
The editor is really simple but powerful. With only a few basic elements, you can do really complicated stuff. For me, the biggest "problem" is that it takes a lot of time to take into account all the different ways players might want to solve a situation, and the implications of each choice.

That's why my PnP adventures are mostly a situation, a bunch of people, some places and some hints on how things can go, but then let the GM handle the rest.
But it's harder to get a computer GM to make things up on the fly. Though that's something I might try to do as well...
