Full Version: THE summoner

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to make a summoner, like you summon a spitit ( or use a bound one) and fight along side them with either melee weapons or guns. and how it worked out
Makki
yes. Friends in melee bonus works out nicely. Just don't jump into combats, because calling and ordering and materializing takes a while.
Xenefungus
Sure:

Elf.
Cha Tradition
Cha 8, Will 6
Magic 6
Summoning 6
Totem for Spirit of choice (+2)
Spec for Spirit of choice (+2)
If GM approves: aspected magician, summoners way + optional rule: specialized aspected magicions (+2)
Power Focus 4
Edge 6, to be sure

22 dice to summon, 14 to resist. easy peasy starting point.
Dont fight yourself. Let force 12 spirits do that job. Most of the time, opponents have no way of hurting them.
Especially when you go play a street level campaign. Which you can do whenever you wish.
Have fun.

Yes, I knoqw how to builds a mage :3, I want to know if making a combat summoner is viable. as in, i summon force X spirit and say fight with me, he goes in and attacks, my next IP I go in and fight with my spirit. basically something along the lines of a pathfinder summoner.
Xenefungus
Oh i see. I guess perhaps the most interesting way to do this would be via an Ally Spirit, so the spirit actually has a personality and stays with you smile.gif

seconded. I believe that the "combat summoner" is viable, though personally I would go as a Mystic Adept if you intend to wade in beside them. The offset of losing Astral, which is an easy place for mages to watch a battle and not get shot, would be an easy loss if you are there anyway. The adept power split could also help you with some close range madness if you are careful.

I would take a mage with Binding at 6, though, and not summoning. Bound spirits are not the first call to battle, but binding them is much harder than summoning in the first place. And since you are limited by charisma, and perhaps available cash, you can bind 3 or 4, and if the battle begins to turn against you and your 1 summoned spirit, you have reinforcements on standby. A Power Foci can offset the one or two dice lost to Adept powers as well.

Yeah, it is workable. On the other hand picking up spellcasting and some spells is not that much of an investment...
Raiden
I have a 1k karmagen shaman, seems like it will work pretty well ( we have 1k and no free knowledge skills or contacts). though for 750 karmagen I would probably go mystic adept. question though. if I am mystic adept and have 4 magic in casting and 2 in PP can I summon force 6 spirits without causing physical drain?
Irion
@Raiden
Yes and No.
The rules can be read to YES, but the FAQ say NO.

Yes, mystic adepts use Full Magic rating in calculations for most things - under Anniversary Edition rules.

The faq ruling that says otherwise is an erronous, out of date ruling from 6+ years ago that was never updated when the core book rules
changed - so ignore it.
Glyph
Actually, the FAQ ruling was wrong with the original rules, which have an example of a mystic adept spending 1 point of Magic for 1 Power Point, and using it to take four levels of Rapid Healing.

Well, it only says so specifically for Adept powers. smile.gif

Whether you can apply your full Magic Rating to compare with the Force of spells and spirits is not exactly in the rules.

The big question is, what is meant by the phrase "to use with Magic-based skills" in the Mystic Adepts description.

It can be read as:

a) When you roll your Magic-based skills, you only use the lower Magic Rating to generate your dice pool.
b) The lower Magic Rating is used for everything during the use of a Magic-based skill.

Since Drain is a part of the spellcasting or summoning process (i.e. the use of a Magic-based skill), b) is absolutely as viable as a).

Xenefungus
We should REALLY do a sticky concerning those pesky Mystic Adepts rules. It comes up in EVERY thread lately -.-
Thanee
Yeah, probably because it is so very unclear. smile.gif

Quoting from the example (and this is SR4, mind you), emphasis mine:

QUOTE (SR4 pg. 187)
When using her Magic-linked skills, such as Spellcasting or Summoning, she will be able to allocate 3 dice for Magic (since the other is tied up in her adept powers). For all other uses, her Magic attribute counts at its full value of 4.

Thanee
That would indeed make a) a bit more likely. smile.gif
