Full Version: RL Mafia to SR games?

This morning on the radio I heard that they were potential problems between the Luchase and Bonano crime families in NY. both are weak with their leaders in prison and new bosses taking their position. The son of one boss disappeared and various people are blaming the other family. The missing man's wife filed a missing person report but wehen his dad was brought in, nobody knew nothing.

Speculation is:
a) Dad had a problem with son and had him taken care of.
b) Bonoano are trying to look strong by muscling Luchase and the Luchase won't move because they don't want a mob war while week.
c) Luchase boss didn't say anything to the police because he wants to deal with it himself and a mob war is brewing.

All I could think was this sounded more like a Shadowrun set up than a real news report, but i wondered if you encountered other htings like that.
Frag-o Delux
Not the mob, but the story I was talking about other places. The 3 kids with their heads cut off. A rumor floating around now is that the smugglers who smuggled the family into the country did it for revenge because the family didn't finish paying the smugglers smuggling fees.

About 8 years ago, a guy my friends were hooked up with payed them to hijack a truck once. The damn thing was filled with toilet paper. He knew it and that is what he wanted. I could only imagine he had a real bathroom issue. He also hired them to "pick up" cars. Our truck driver got picked up on some other charges, I think he got picked up on dog fighting, so we didn't have anyone to drick rigs. The guy kept trying to get us to hit other trucks but none of us could drive a rig. So we stuck to "picking up" cars and a little drug moveing.

I also worked for a guy in high school as a bag man for a few months. Nothing much just pick up a bag here and drop it off there. A friend in one of my classes got me into it. After a while I couldn't do it anymore, nothing morally just had other things to do. I saw my friend a few years later, he was running guns then.

The good old days, now I have to play games.

Erk, remind me never to head up to Baltimore again. Geez I thought all the rumors about Baltimore was just DC folks ragging on y'all. nyahnyah.gif

As for the kids, didn't they take in a cousin and uncle of the kids into custody?
Frag-o Delux
Yeah, that is why I said it was rumor. So far the head detective sats he believes it is the uncle and cousin, but haas no idea why they did it.

Buddy of mine lived in Va Beach for a while, one year a chain of Korean/Japanese cuisine restaurants sprang up, within two years all but 1 had been burned to the ground.

I should run a game sometime where the characters are in Boston and work for the Mafia and the FBI.

This is why, as a resident of DeeCee, I've stopped watching the news. I have some friends who I'd consider fairly straight edge, and they still have stories I can't believe.
Frag-o Delux
DC is not all cream and sunshine either. I was down there a few weeks ago. I was reading the Post I believe and the front page story was 14 police officers arrested, charges vary. Some were arrested for drugs, both possession and selling, some were arrested for something to do with prostitution and at least one was arrested for spouse abuse.

Just our comissionars are corrupt. smile.gif One was guilty under federal rackettering charges and the replacement was cleared last night of spouse abuse.

EDIT: Baltimore is not that bad. Stay away from certain neighborhoods and you will be fine.

eek.gif I just live in Tallahassee...Thank heavens I live in a relatively small-sized city.

I live in Tallahassee Florida.
We built this city on Rock and Roll, using empty beer bottles and Girls Gone Wild videos.

dont ask what we used as mortar for those "bricks."
Snow_Fox
this is the sort of hting I was wondering about.

Frag, the truck full of toilet paper, yes that's a really interesting visual, ubt odds are it was a message sent to the trucking company, pay up or the next time it might be a truck full of steroos instead of extra absorbant double ply.

Funny. My namesake character is from Vegas...

Vegas as presented in the NAN books ROCKS in SR. Civvies can carry assault rifles and shotguns open on the street, and many do. Crime is horribly low. Horruble to SR in for that reason. smile.gif

Forget the stereos (I assume you meant stereos). Cigarettes are more profitable, and have been for a godawful long time.

Meh.

I keep thinking it could have been better in SoNA.

Crime is low because the laws are so lax. The Mafia and Comanches regularly butt heads, they are allowed to rig the games, and the Ute accepts bribery as legitimate salary! Just leave town when it rains!

The Casino scandal in IL is getting really interesting. They call it the Curse of the 10th License, and I quote "The battle for the last permit has left a path of financial heartache, ruined careers and bitter disappointment in its wake." If that doesn't describe Shadowrun, I don't know what does. A fight between mob, sprawls, state and investors. Millions at stake, millions lost, reputations trashed, lawyers up the wazoo, and all for a revokable permit.

Being from alternately Southie and Roxbury, I'd play that game in a heartbeat.

Incidentally, when I'm drunk enough, I'm full of childhood stories from my family, several of whom were made. I made some extra money as a kid for my family as a package boy for them at one point.

When I got older, well... somethings are best left unsaid.

No wonder I took to Shadowrun so readily...

I didn't ask. Just went out that night with the rest of the guys to drink. I was curious as to why he needed all that toilet paper but, I have no problem not knowing. Easy money though.

Well, down here a few months ago in Tallahassee, a man (a lawyer, I believe) was stabbed fatally at one of the local shopping/dining complexes. Not that far from where I live, actually...Sounded to me like the man owed someone something and got offed as a result. eek.gif
Kagetenshi
People who owe things don't get offed that often. Dead men tell no tales, and they also repay no debts.

~J
BitBasher
They do suffer grevious injury and their family member have nonfatal accidents though.
Kagetenshi
Probably more painful than grievous. Hospital bills have a way of sucking up that money that you wanted back.

~J
Nikoli
Sacre tactics work wonders, as do the breaking of small, non-essential appendages, like fingers or toes. anything else and you hurt their chances of repayment, unless of course that was the idea in the first place.
Frag-o Delux
Some times makeing an example of one dead beat makes the rest line up in a very quick pace to pay back. Loseing a few dollars to one guy will make the rest pay up. If you go soft then no one will pay. If no one will pay then you lose a very descent means of cash, either loan sharking or gambeling. Also some people that are known get things on the arm, if they don't pay up, then other people start to think they can take advantage of you. So one stiff makes a lot of troubles go away.

The streets run on reputation. If you are seen as a push over people will come for you. If you are seen as a killer most people will stay away and play by your rules.
Kagetenshi
Oh certainly, but the reason would be more complicated than "he didn't pay up". It'd be more like "he didn't pay up, and neither did these other six guys; time for an example."

Speaking of Baltimore, did they ever have an arrest in the murder of that john hopkins kid from a few months back? He'd decided to spend the night at his frat's house after a party, and loaned his appartment to a fellow frat member who needed to study, and was stabbed in that guys room sometime in the night after the party had broken up.
