alright in a current run that i am gming. one of our mages cast improved invisibility on all of the party members. so now they cant be seen by cameras, and other visual sensors and metahumans. so what about a laser sensor? since it bends light does this make it so they can walk right pass them like they are nothing?

Yep, they go right past it. As it bends light perfectly to make them invisible the laser trip beam would also be fooled.
If you want to spot improved invisibility. Try sound. Rader, Ultrasound, motion sensors. Hell presure plates and a few locked doors.
On little ingenious bit of security is a presure plate by a maglocked door. The camera automaticly focus in on the door should the plate be triggerd. If the plate is triggered but the camera can not detect what triggered it ALARM.

Yes - Assuming that the spell beat the object resistance of the sensor.

The object resistance test is minus 1. The sensor automaticly fails.
Non-living devices to not get a resitsance test againts physical illusion spells such as Improved Invisibility

Where does the '-1' come from?

There is no test, but the Spell only succeeds if you generate enough hits to beat the object's Threshold (SR4 - pg 176), which means that Improved Invisibility must be at least Force 3.
