As some of you have no doubt already noticed, the new server is online and serving requests for the forums. You will see
http://nexus-forums.dumpshock.com/ in the URL for the next several days --
do not bookmark links that start with this hostname - it's only temporary. The database that the forum data lives in has not yet been migrated to the new sever, but moving the web applications should alleviate the time issues that we've been having until we can get the database moved. That will happen today, but probably not until a little later -- be prepared for a (hopefully short) outage when we move the database.
The remaining Dumpshock.com sites and services (ie: IRC) will be moved over the next week or two in preparation for a rebuild of the old server. Expect there to be some outages while we're working on that as we wait for DNS to propagate. These outages should be short lived, and we definitely need your help in locating any problems that arise as part of the transition, so if you notice any stranger than normal behavior, please let us know.

Thanks again for all of the support that made this new server possible. I can't tell you how glad I am to be able to improve the performance and reliability of all of the Dumpshock services.

Hopefully Gentoo. I'm not a huge fan of Fedora.

I just tried to post in Welcome to the Shadows and got this error:
CODE |
Mail Error!
SMTP protocol failure! Host: localhost Return Code: Return Msg: Invision Power Board Error: Check your SMTP settings from the admin control panel |
The post did go through, so I'm guessing your PMs are too.

I think I have that SMTP issue worked out now -- let me know if you see any more problems.
P.S. The DB is now on the new server too.

Yeah, I know .. it should be working now. I have it band-aided together until I have a chance to fix it for good. Bear with me.

I finally decided on CentOS which is basically an open source re-release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Bandaids? What you need is duct tape.

UPDATE: I finally got out to the colocation facility to pick up the server. I know it's been a while, but between the end of the school year and the kids being home for summer, crazy work deadlines, and life in general it just hasn't worked out. I'm going to start troubleshooting it tomorrow to find out why it keeps locking up and with a little luck I hope to have it back online within a couple of weeks or so -- we'll see how that goes, but it's good to have goals at least.
Hang in there.

Just make sure you have it up by GenCon, or you'll have a real headache on your hands

Well, so far I know what it's not -- namely, the memory. I was so hoping it was going to be something as simple as a bad DIMM, but no such luck. The troubleshooting continues, disk diagnostic is next.

Nexus has had it's operating system reinstalled and has been deployed to the colocation facility again for more abuse. I'm going to attempt to move the forums back to it later this evening -- just the forums and not the database behind them, so it should be mostly transparent. We'll let that run for a few days and make sure things are stable before moving the DB as well since I can revert back to the status quo much more quickly if I don't have to try to toss around the moderately large database image..
I'll keep you posted.

The forums are in the process of switching over to use nexus -- traffic is splitting between the two servers for the moment. As soon as the DNS is completely propagated, all traffic will be on nexus again. Some oddity may ensue in the mean time, but it shouldn't last long.
Keep your fingers crossed.
