Full Version: The A-team

Since I started playing SR about 6 months ago I've had it in my head that I need to make the A-team into a runner group, I think they would fit perfectly into this world. However I don't know how to flesh out the characters. I assumed B.A. would be a troll with tons of B/R and Face would be an elf mage with a spell for finding things. Anyway, my request to everyone is to help me make these characters. Thanks.
Capt. Dave
Well, you'd have to give B.A. a phobia of flying...
I'd love to help, but it's been a looong time since I've seen that show. Damnit.
The Question
Murdocks the team Rigger, concentrating on vans. Modified vans, obviously. Add in some "You aint no Red Indian, foo!" flaws hes done.

B.A's the Troll combat monster with no weapon skills to speak of and a Tactical Thermonuclear Deathbot B/R skill numbering in the thousands.

Face is, well, a face! Give him high Ettiquite: Secondary Female Characters, a disguise kit which features two wigs and a fake nose and he's complete.

Hannibals our leader so throw in small unit tactics, some sensorware, a big fat cigar and a love of plans that come together.

The van was B.A.'s in the show. Murdock was a pilot who could fly planes and choppers.
The Grifter
Don't forget
Distinctive Style: Too many gold chains and stupid mohawk

for B.A.
Pinel
Would a variant of the Day Job flaw cover the fact that Murdoch has to be sprung or conned out of a psychiatric ward before every run ? smile.gif

Does that show still run somewhere ? Man, I'm old...
Smiley
All of them would have to have the Hunted flaw, probably at 4. I'd make B.A. a human-looking ork for the body and strength bonuses. And let's face it, he's not the most charismatic or intelligent of cats, so he can stand -1 to each.
Smiley
I'd custom make him a variation of compulsive, kinda like a mild allergy, where he literally can't stand no jibber-jabber.
Atropos
Argh you stole my idea!

Anyhow, they should all have incompetence in all firearm skills. No matter how many thousands of bullets flew on that show, no one ever got shot.

Also, they'd need some variation of the pacifist flaw. They would rough people up, but there would always be a shot of the bad guys escaping the flipped vehicle before it exploded/drowned/etc. IE violence is allowed, just no killing people.
TheBovrilMonkey
BA would most certainly need the Thrown Weapons skill, with a maxed out specialisation of Metahuman Body. When he wasn't shooting the floor he was throwing people after all.
Also, I think an addiction to gold chains would probably be appropriate.

Hannibal would have to take a compulsion flaw (probably for zero points), for having to look over the site of the run, grin and say 'I love it when a plan comes together', regardless of circumstances.
His disguise skill would have to be phenominal.

Along with being mad, Murdock would need a dependant NPC style flaw for Billy, his invisible dog, as well as compultion: annoy the hell out of BA at every opportunity.

Heh. In Germany, it runs every sunday afternoon, on a rather large TV station. I think, atr least; haven't watched that station in months.

And both BA and Hannibal need Cars B/R as well as the supporting skill Make Vehicle Weapons And Armour From Stuff You Find In Old Sheds at 6.
hahnsoo
Hell, in some places, "The Greatest American Hero" is still playing. And I hear that at any given moment, "Happy Days" or a Happy Days spinoff ( and there are quite a few of them) is playing somewhere in the world.
hermit
Y'know, I'll try and watch A-Tam and Knight rider tomorrow. Just for some good old fashioned nostalgia.
Shadow
The A-team can be seen on TV everyday (at least in the states) on TVland.

Don't forget Faces uber, uh face skills.

Easily an adept with all kinds of mind control powers to make people like him and complete strangers go to bed with him.

Atropos:

Actually, in the first-season episode (episode 6) "Black Day at Bad Rock", Sergeant Bosco "B.A." Baracus was treated for a gunshot wound. Also, in the second-season episode (episode 37) "Curtain Call", Captain H.M. "Howlin' Mad" Murdock was shot -- he pushed Hannibal out of the way and took a slug in the left shoulder. (Murdock was also temporarily blinded in the first-season episode "The Beast From The Belly of a Boeing" (episode 13).)

In order to get him medical attention in "Curtain Call", the team bandaged his face and turned him over to Colonel Lynch and his men, telling them that he was actually Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck, and that his face had been burned (or something of the sort), in addition to the gunshot wound.

(As if the Colonel would be stupid enough to believe it.... Once the bandages came off, he'd find out the truth....)

Incidentally, their signature weapons were actually SEMIAUTOMATIC Ruger Mini-14 rifles, in stainless steel. NBC used a full-auto sound effect from an M-16 firing. It's one reason that many folks who aren't knowledgeable about firearms think "machine gun" when the words "semiautomatic weapon" are mentioned.

Personally, though, I don't understand how the show lasted as long as it did. If the stories that I read are true--and I think they are, as they were reported by T.V. GUIDE or another entertainment magazine, and not by the tabloids-- George Peppard ("Lieutenant Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith") and Mr. T. ("Sergeant Bosco A. 'B.A.' Baracus") couldn't stand each other.

Also, IIRC, I once read that Melinda Culea ("Amy Allen") was, to put it politely, a bit of a ditz. Rumor has it that NONE of the cast and crew tolerated her very well, and that the studio once had to re-shoot an entire episode because she went off and had her hair restyled during her lunch break. (Ms. Culea was dropped after episode 26 (the twelfth episode of Season Two), "The White Ballot"; no explanation was given.)

Marla Heasley ("Tawnia Baker") appeared in episode 23, "There's Always a Catch", but didn't "officially" become a member of the cast until episode 30, "Say It with Bullets". However, she only lasted until episode 40, "The Bend In The River (Part 2)", the third episode of Season 3. (I think, although I'm not certain, that it was because viewers complained that having such a character wasn't really necessary.)

Shadow: How about an Elf with the Pheromone Control Adept power (or Tailored Pheromones bioware)? Although he was pretty good at conning GUYS, too. (I don't think that that stuff works as well on members of ones own sex, does it?) Either that, or a Magician's Way Adept with Control Thoughts or Influence Actions, or something of the sort.

All in all, the show was a pleasant diversion, especially after a day of being tormented --mentally, at least-- in high school. Let me explain: my brother and I were, it seemed at the time, the only conservative Republicans in a whole school full of liberal Democrats. Some of our schoolmates actually cheered when President Reagan was shot (March 30, 1981), and again when President Sadat of Egypt was assassinated on October 6th of the same year.

(Excuse the bold/italic text. Part is for the titles; the rest is because I'm trying to make a point.)

Personally I loved the show. Sure no one got shot, or killed. But the idea of the show was just great. It is the precursor to Ronin, and other such movies about trained pro's doing what trained pros do.

Was it cheesy, absolutely, but it was fun. Unfortunately what you said about conflict on the show was accurate. Which is why it didn't last nearly as long as it should of.

I have heard rumors floating around that a well known producer is trying to put together a modern day version, a little darker but essentially the same show.

Dunno, four seems a little high. Whilst what's-his-name knew all about them, so definately the Dossier on File flaw, he was always a couple steps behind them.

QUOTE (Atropos)

I thought that was the whole idea, trying to avoid killing people where ever possible, plus the age range they were aiming the show at? I'd say high firearms skills all around but take the Pacifist flaw instead.

Face: Adept specialised in social interaction - see SotA 64 for how evil this can be, maxed out etiquette and charisma, Friendly Face and Good Looking And Knows It

BA: Ork with the Human Looking edge, rigger specialising in ground vehicles, wide a range of B/R skills as possible, enhanced articulation would be good for this, max out the strength and forget the charisma, and of course Phobia Flying

Hannibal: More bioware - cerebral booster 2, reflex recorders to go with maxed out small units, tactics and planning skills

Murdock: Rigger specialising in flying things, Flashbacks maybe - was he really loco or pretending, some flaw to represent having to spring him
hermit
Okay, here's my take. It's far from complete, feel free to add, criticise or

All team members have the Flaws 'On The Run' at 6 and one additional Enemy (Col. Lydekker, was that his name?).

Hannibal
Race: Human
Edges: Photographic Memory, Common Sense, Good Observation, Courage
Flaws: none.
Skills: Small Unit Tactics 8,
Knowledge Skills: Military Tactics 6, Good Cigars 6

Murdock:
Race: Human
Edges: Gift (Helicopters), Gift (Planes)
Flaws: Day Job (Inmate at mental hospital), Howlin' Mad Murdock's Mental/Social Flaw of the Week (Make a table out of all available social and mental flaws (there're 29). Every week, roll 3D10. Number determines what mental flaw is flaw of the week. Phobias, distinctive style or other variables are to be determined by GM discretion. All flaws are taken in the highest possible value. These points do NOT count when determining Eedge/flaw points at Chargen; instead, threat this as a 6 point flaw.)
Skills: Acting 4, Helicopters 7, Planes 7
Knowledge Skills:

BA:
Race: Orc (or human, if you want to stay close to the original; if so, add "Extraordinary Attribute: Strength")
Edges: Toughness, High Pain Tolerance 3, Gift: Cars B/R; Gift: Improvised B/R
Flaws: Distinctive Style (Mohawk, 10 kilogram of gold), Phobia (Flight) at 5, Berserker
Skills: Unarmed 8, Cars B/R
Knowledge skills: Improvised B/R

Face:
Race: Elf (or human, if you want to stay close to the original; if so, add 'Extraordinary Attribute: Charisma')
Edges: Good Reputation, Social Cameleon, Good Looks and Knows, 5 additional connections, Friends Abroad, Gift: Etiquette
Flaws: none
Skills: Acquire Objects 6, Find Fence 6, Etiquette 8,
Knowledge Skills: various history, social and conversation related skills

For those of us who care season one of A-team (and Knight Rider) is out on DVD and season two of both shows are coming out this Tuesday (April 12th). In the notes I keeping on this Hannibal was a part time actor and always wore disguises. Horrible, horrible, disguises. Also, I've replaced "chummer" with "fool" in BA's vocabulary.

I need those dvd-boxset. Too bad that i don't have a working dvd-player at home. Or a tv. wink.gif
Pinel
I would give the entire team the Improvised B/R skill at level 8, as long as they are working together to escape from captivity or prepare for "battle", and the final contraption must be non-lethal.

Knight Rider too ? Wow. And I thought the Space Channel was cool.

Pinel:

Thanks for the compliment. I was only trying to explain why I watched some of that stuff. KNIGHT RIDER was one of my favorite shows (even though I was in my late 'teens; the show's pilot episode premiered on September 24, 1982--I'd turned 18 just under 4 months earlier, on May 30 [I told you folks that I was old! nyahnyah.gif ]), until I realized how formulaic it was getting. (K.I.T.T. being bashed and rebuilt in every season opener? Come on. In the pilot episode, they said he was indestructible.) smile.gif

I was stricken by inspiration while reading some of the earlier posts, though.

Atropos:

Regarding what you said about "incompetence with firearms", have you considered it from this standpoint?

Wouldn't it take someone who was AWFULLY GOOD with a weapon to lay down suppressive fire with a full-automatic weapon without actually hitting anyone?

Not that I'm arguing with you. I was just offering another possible explanation. smile.gif

After all, the A-Team were supposed to be former members of the U.S. Army Special Forces. When faced with inadequately-trained opponents--as often happened on the show, even though the team was almost always outnumbered-- men of that stripe usually DON'T miss unless they WANT to.

(BTW: As anyone who posts here who's from a military background can tell you, don't EVER call a (current or former) member of the Special Forces a "Green Beret" to his face, unless you're looking for a fight. To SF vets, a "green beret" is a HAT. Not to mention the fact that President Bush authorized every member of the U.S. Army to wear the black beret--formerly the unique headgear of the Rangers--a few years ago. IIRC, it was originally green for Special Forces, red for Airborne, light blue for the Air Force's special services branch (I'm afraid that I can't recall the name), and black for Rangers. As I've said, though, I was never in the military [due to several preexisting medical conditions], so I might be wrong about which color beret was unique to which branch of service.)

In 2064, a crack UCAS Special Forces unit was sentenced to prison by a military court for a crime that they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped to the Seattle underground, where they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, no one else can help you, and you can find them, maybe you can hire...THE A-TEAM.

Nitpick: Virtually indestructable. They hand;t tested him against military weapomry, only small arms. The special coating was iffy on the high end, even KITT mentioned this in a number of episodes.

Not to disagree with you, but it was the General of the Army who pushed for the change under President Clinton in 1999. The change became effective right after 9/11. The President could have stopped it, but he would have alienated his Army's General to do so.

As a former Soldier, and as someone who served with the Rangers I felt this was an unjustified and political move. After reading about it a little I came to see the reason why they made the decision. I still disagree with it though.

The history of the beret is linked closely to the OSS in WWII and it is a interesting history for those interested.

Call me odd if you will, but I'd probably make the A-team as 4 Mundane Humans with different specialties, and lots of B&R skills/gear.

Face and Hannibal especially. They are infiltrators who manage to blend in where they need to.

You don't need magic or cyber to build or operate a cabbage gun. Although some sort of specialized influence spell might be in order to keep getting locked in machine shops and tool sheds.

It does make a little sense for them to blend in. But, since they were a crack commando unit(god I love that phrase), they would probably have a mage, which in head would have been the Faceman.
lorthazar
Definately Faceman as the mage. Probably Shamanic...Coyote.

BA would be Physad or heavy cybered.

Hannibal would be bioware enhanced Face

Murdock would be a rigger with the rigger equivalent of MBW-4 and the side effect of insanties.
DexRiley
Here's B.A. v. 1.2 any comments? Part of me wants to make him a rigger because it would seem to fit the character well, of course it would be a perfectly good waste of a tank. I need to add Cyber, contacts, and gear, any suggestions? To much or not enough so far? History will be upcoming once I finish all the characters. P.S. Thanks to everyone thats help with the character creation so far.

Before the rule ninja pounce, I'll point out I didn't use any system for character creation. I just arbitrarily assigned numbers.
PBTHHHHT
I can see his car B/R being higher than 5.
Also give him demolitions!
The Question
I'd actually think Murdock would be a better candidate for Shamen on the team, but thats just because an insane crack commando who thinks he's a red indian would be so much cooler slinging mojo...
