Interesting, I absolutely -HATED- d20 Modern after trying it, but I loved it before play... The only game I might like less is Amber Diceless, and I prefer diceless RPGs (just not that one).
However, that's another thread and I'll wait to explain myself for such a thread to show up.
Games I like depend heavily on genre.
For supers: Mutants and Masterminds.
Story -- n/a - I use this because it's a general comic book supers RPG.
Speed -- 6
Battle -- 8
Char Development -- 9
Customization -- 9
GM Friendly -- 8
For postCyber, Cyber, and Transhumanism: Ex Machina
Story -- 8 - although I use my own setting, the four it includes are the best four gamer Cyber settings published.
Speed -- 8
Battle -- 5 - unless you fix it, this game makes SR 1st edition look dangerous. Fix is easy though
Char Development -- 8
Customization -- 8
GM Friendly -- 9
For most other things: Hero System
Story -- n/a - I use this because it doesn't have a built in story
Speed -- -27 - this is Hero's BIG weakpoint. It jumps to '5' in non-supers games.
Battle -- 8
Char Development -- 8
Customization -- 8
GM Friendly -- 9
Shadowrun is not on my list, but if I were to rate it I would do:
Story -- 1
Speed -- 5
Battle -- 7
Char Development -- 6
Customization -- no idea
GM Friendly -- 4
It has too much metaplot, and the setting is just silly - As a native American it just bothers me how our populations are hand-waved about so much, and I just couldn't get past that. There's also just too much Japan, which in the real world by 2060 will likely make France look important by comparrison...
I love the game system however, and I love the idea of mixing DnD fantasy tropes (Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, and even 'Shadowrunners' are all old-school DnD) into Cyberpunk and then tossing in some pseudo-Shamanism based on somebody's read of a late 80's new age Shamanism book.

I just have a lot of issues with the details...
Shadowrun is one of those games that I both really like and am really frustrated with at the same time.
