At the risk of being flamed to death I was wondering the following:

A)What Table Top RPG system do you think is best.
B)Why is it the best in your opinion.

And then 1 being bad 10 being good rate it on the following:

C)Storyline.
D)Speed of play
E)Battle System
F)Character Development
G)Customization
H)GM Friendly

Go on now, be honest!

Best overall? Dunno if I could say which is mine. I like 3.

Shadowrun -- I like this for the story, the combat, and just overall I like the whole game.

Story -- 10
Speed -- 6
Battle -- 9
Development -- 8
Customization -- 5
GM Friendly -- 5

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay -- I like this game because it is deadly, oppressive kind of atmosphere, and the SR-like grey morality nature of adventuring in the world.

Story -- 10
Speed -- 8
Battle -- 7
Development -- 7
Customization -- 7
GM Friendly -- 8

AD&D -- Good times

Story -- ??
Speed -- 8
Battle -- 6
Development -- 7
Customization -- 6
GM Friendly -- 6

D20 Modern

Hmm... I'll put out the few I've tried.

A)What Table Top RPG system do you think is best.

Shadowrun, hands down.

B)Why is it the best in your opinion.

The mechanics are neat and very fluid. It allows a lot more tactical thinking than most games I've seen out there. And the world its built on is terrific.

C)Storyline.
10!
D)Speed of play
6-8 depending on how many rules you're willing to drop
E)Battle System
7-9, far above average
F)Character Development
8, a lot of great options, but it takes a lot of world knowledge to make a great character. Its easy to make certain cliche characters, but I think that's a flaw for me only, and not of the game in general.
G)Customization
8
H)GM Friendly
3 Requires a fair bit of out of world knowledge, and the books have horrid organization.

I'll throw in one more:
Cyberpunk 2020
C)Storyline.
6. Relies on what other people wrote mostly.
D)Speed of play
7. In some cases, very good, but rolling for each bullet in autofire sucks eggs.
E)Battle System
4. Too simplistic sometimes, too detail oriented in others. No happy medium.
F)Character Development
4. The chargen tree is silly, and the system feels sort of ad libbed.
G)Customization
9
H)GM Friendly
7. Book could be better, but it's reasonably straightforward.

Though call. I'd rather say that there several RPGs that are very good at what they do. I love Shadowrun, but there's no way it can do what Amber Diceless does (and viceversa), for example.

Given that a few people here have talked abot Shadowrun, let me add my two cents about Amber Diceless RPG.

D20 Modern

Interesting, I absolutely -HATED- d20 Modern after trying it, but I loved it before play... The only game I might like less is Amber Diceless, and I prefer diceless RPGs (just not that one).

However, that's another thread and I'll wait to explain myself for such a thread to show up.

Games I like depend heavily on genre.

For supers: Mutants and Masterminds.
Story -- n/a - I use this because it's a general comic book supers RPG.
Speed -- 6
Battle -- 8
Char Development -- 9
Customization -- 9
GM Friendly -- 8

For postCyber, Cyber, and Transhumanism: Ex Machina
Story -- 8 - although I use my own setting, the four it includes are the best four gamer Cyber settings published.
Speed -- 8
Battle -- 5 - unless you fix it, this game makes SR 1st edition look dangerous. Fix is easy though
Char Development -- 8
Customization -- 8
GM Friendly -- 9

For most other things: Hero System
Story -- n/a - I use this because it doesn't have a built in story
Speed -- -27 - this is Hero's BIG weakpoint. It jumps to '5' in non-supers games.
Battle -- 8
Char Development -- 8
Customization -- 8
GM Friendly -- 9

Shadowrun is not on my list, but if I were to rate it I would do:
Story -- 1
Speed -- 5
Battle -- 7
Char Development -- 6
Customization -- no idea
GM Friendly -- 4

It has too much metaplot, and the setting is just silly - As a native American it just bothers me how our populations are hand-waved about so much, and I just couldn't get past that. There's also just too much Japan, which in the real world by 2060 will likely make France look important by comparrison...

I love the game system however, and I love the idea of mixing DnD fantasy tropes (Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, and even 'Shadowrunners' are all old-school DnD) into Cyberpunk and then tossing in some pseudo-Shamanism based on somebody's read of a late 80's new age Shamanism book. nyahnyah.gif

I just have a lot of issues with the details...

Shadowrun is one of those games that I both really like and am really frustrated with at the same time.

A/B) I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd say In Nomine. It's very fast, very flexible. It's easy to go from comic to serious. I like that PCs have restrictions on what they can and can't do, and that you can still choose to do certain things but face consequences. It creates a lot of dramatic tension.

C)Storyline - 9 (it doesn't really have a story itself, but the way things are defined makes it easy to develop interesting stories of your own)
D)Speed of play - 10
E)Battle System - 5 (not it's strongest point)
F)Character Development - 10
G)Customization -7
H)GM Friendly - 7

Here's how I'd rate Shadowrun, in case you're interested for comparison.

C - 8
D - 6
E - 6
F - 10
G - 7
H - 7

A)What Table Top RPG system do you think is best.

--I'd have to say the two out right now that are the best? since SR4 hasn't gotten to my hands yet I'd have to say Exalted and Legend of the Five Rings (i'm gonna use 3rd ed since it just came out and me and my friends are about to start a game)

B)Why is it the best in your opinion.

--Well exalted, the world is diverse, you can use the system to run just about anything. And its been realy realy enjoyable to play.

L5R, is heroic samurai action at its best. The rich backstory, prety simple rules, Lethal combat, and ninja's...can't go wrong with ninja's

And then 1 being bad 10 being good rate it on the following:

C)Storyline.
D)Speed of play
E)Battle System
F)Character Development

H)GM Friendly

Exalted

Storyline - 8 (Storyline doesn't actualy advance at all, thats left up to the gm's. Horray for no metaplot)
Speed of play -9
Battle System - 10 (no other system has realy allowed for the fast ball special)
Character Development - 7
Customization - 8
GM Friendly - 6

L5R

Storyline - 10
Speed of Play - 7
Battle System - 10 (well as long as you like lethal combat otherwise i'd surmise it'd be much lower)
Character Development - 8
Customization - 8
GM Friendly - 6

Edit: damn I forgot about paranoia. <Someone behind the poster> How do you know what paranoia is citizen?
<me> What? no wait damn it you commie scum!*pulls out the next clone*

Here's one that I loved.

A: Wraith

B: It didn't do very well and was considered the worst selling of the WoD games. But what a setting. If you ever get the chance, read the history of the setting. Wow. And this was a game that really was scary. Unlike Vampire.

C: 10 this is what sells it.

D: 5 Can get bogged down by the shadow if the GM dosn't keep a reign on things.

E: 3 It's WoD combat system. Yeauck.

F: 9 It's all about character. It's the only game that made it mandatory to think about what motivates your characher in life...er death.

G: 6 The game itself wasn't very modifiable, but it could be inserted into any other game perfectly. I dropped it into Shadowrun with almost no changes to either game.

H: 2 Ok, here is why it failed. Frankly, it was depressing. But it was the whey Shadows were played that seemed to bother most players. The fact that you had to buy a whole 'nother book to tell the GM how to prevent shadows from ruining the game is the bad part.

While on topic, Mage was pretty good as well for the magic system if nothing else. Best magic system I aver encountered. To bad the rest of the game was such a pill. "Reads like stereo instructions."

My favorite game is Savage Worlds

The ease of running it, the fast play while still having enough crunch to make most players happy. And there are some great settings for it

C) Both 1 and 9 Savage Worlds is generic, and has no stroy line. However,t here are a few really great worldbooks for it. 50F, Rippers and soon deadlands Reloaded do Rock
D) 9 I was thinking about a 10 here, but i think a 10 should only be given rarely. SW runs really fast though
E) 9 SImple, effective, and makes it possible to run battles within a session and then contineu with the next aprt of the adventure. It won't take more time then normal combat ( wich is pretty fast in SW )
F) 8 Plenty of Character development in SW, lots of options,a nd everyone anxious for their next upgrade
G) 9 Savage Worlds is very customizable. Lots of people have done that, and there is hardly a game wich makes it easier.
H)10 Savage Worlds is a dream for a GM. Preparing ( if youare into that ) is a dream. Runnign without preparation is easy, so easy. I GM-ed dozens of systems but none is so easy to run as Savage Worlds
